DVDs

Looking for just the right movie to show your appreciation this Christmas/Hanukkah/Kwanzaa? Here's our take on a few of the newest and greatest lesbian-themed TV shows and movies out on DVD right now.

Ellen Season 5 and The Ellen DeGeneres Show: DVD-Licious — Despite a few missteps (who thought an episode about a Civil War re-enactment was a good idea?), the final season of Ellen is one of the best because it chronicles the burgeoning relationship between Ellen and Laurie (Lisa Darr). Throw in a compilation of the best bits from DeGeneres' talk show, and the Ellen fan in your life will love you forever. We promise.

Imagine Me & You — This girl-meets-girl romance is the perfect gift for your significant other — or the girl you're trying to woo. Yeah, it's a bit cheesy, but it's also cute.

Loving Annabelle — This film about a forbidden romance between a high school student and her teacher is no doubt at the top of many lesbians' wish lists this Christmas because it has all the right ingredients. Good production quality, writing and acting? Check. Secret high school fantasy come to life? Check. Attractive cast? Check. Check.

Serving in Silence — The classic (and controversial) 1989 TV movie starring Glenn Close as real-life general Margarethe Cammermeyer, who made national headlines as the highest-ranking female officer to challenge the military's Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy. Plus: Judy Davis smolders as her girlfriend.

Survivor: Vanuatu — For reality TV fans, pick up the 2004 season of Survivor, which features not one but two lesbians. One of them, Ami Cusack, still ranks as one of AfterEllen.com readers' favorite reality TV lesbians of all time. If you've never watched Survivor before, this is a good season to begin with!

V for Vendetta — For your more politically minded friends, this searing indictment of the Bush administration fascism has a small lesbian subplot at its core, and a bald (and beautiful) Natalie Portman as its lead!

ITUNES

Thanks to iTunes, you can now watch episodes of many of your favorite shows on your computer legally — or even better, on a video iPod with an $11 A/V cable that lets you watch the videos on your television. And you can give iTunes as gifts to your friends, too. Here's some shows to get you started:

30 Rock's lesbian episode, “Blind Date” — Tina Fey and Stephanie March on a blind date. 'Nuff said.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Seasons 1 and 2 — Get your Willow fix! Remember her in those fuzzy pink sweaters? Come, on, we know you loved that little number.

South of Nowhere, Seasons 1 and 2 — If you haven't seen the cute teen romance between Spencer and Ashley on SON yet, what is wrong with you? In Season 1, Spencer comes out and falls for Ashley; in Season 2...well, Spencer and Ashley are still there, at least.

Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip — Aaron Sorkin's wordy, somewhat self-important, behind-the-scenes-in-Tinseltown drama. But forget about all that. I have just two words for you: Sarah Paulson.

Xena: Warrior Princess, Season 1 — The season that started it all. See Gabrielle morph from conservatively dressed peasant girl to two-piece wearing, smack-talking sidekick!

Happy Holidays!
