January 2004

D.E.B.S. premieres at Sundance
The L Word premieres on Showtime; lesbians around the country rejoice
Briana Ramirez-Rial appears as a contestant on American Idol

February 2004

Maggie kisses Bianca on All My Children, temporarily fooling viewers into thinking the show's writers might actually follow through on a lesbian relationship for Bianca
Rosie O'Donnell and her partner Kelli Carpenter are married in San Francisco

March 2004

Wonderfalls premieres on FOX with a lesbian Republican character
Wonderfalls is canceled by FOX after only four episodes
The sitcom Whoopi features a lesbian wedding
VH1 airs Totally Gayer, a light, campy special about gay men and lesbians in pop culture which mostly ignores lesbians in favor of gay men
LPGA golfer Rosie Jones comes out as a lesbian

April 2004

Lena departs All My Children, signaling the beginning of the end of ABC's commitment to its lesbian storyline
Queer as Folk's fourth season premieres, saddling Melanie and Lindsay with storylines revolving around motherhood and sleeping with men
Dr. Kerry Weaver’s lesbian partner Sandy Lopez is killed on ER, and Weaver begins her clichéd custody storyline which will leave her with a storyline that revolves around motherhood

May 2004

Bravo airs a special on gays in entertainment and pop culture called TV Revolution: Out of the Closet which ignores lesbians in favor of gay men, to the surprise of no one

June 2004

The fourth season of HBO's Six Feet Under introduces lesbian Edie, who develops into a love interest for Claire
The second season of FX's Nip/Tuck begins, introducing a (surprise, surprise) motherhood storyline for lesbian anesthesiologist Liz
Dodgeball is released in theaters, featuring a stereotypically promiscuous/non-monogamous bisexual character

July 2004

Minnesota Lynx player Michele Van Gorp comes out and becomes the only out lesbian in the WNBA
She Hate Me premieres, to the derision of lesbians around the country

August 2004

Actress Heather Matarazzo comes out

September 2004

The second season of Ellen DeGeneres's NBC daytime talk show kicks off and becomes even more popular than it was the first season
Actress Cynthia Nixon's relationship with another woman becomes public
t.A.T.u's lack of relationships with women becomes public
Omarosa plays a lesbian on the UPN sitcom Girlfriends, to the horror of lesbians around the country
ABC announces they're developing a sitcom for Melissa Etheridge
FOX's North Shore reinforces bisexual stereotypes with a three-episode storyline
The ninth season of CBS's Survivor debuts with two lesbians, to the delight of lesbians around the country
HBO's The Wire debuts its third season with its excellent lesbian cop character, but no one watches
Justine Bateman guest stars as—what else?—a lesbian mom on Still Standing
The teenage daughter of the main character on FX's critically acclaimed series Rescue Me comes out
Head in the Clouds and When Will I Be Loved both open in L.A. and New York to mixed reviews, and quickly disappear
Out lesbian tennis player Amelie Mauresmo becomes the number one female tennis player in the world

October 2004

Mary Cheney is "outed" in the vice-presidential debates, to the delight of news organizations and pundits around the country
Eulogy finally opens in theaters, but just as quickly disappears
MTV's Battle of the Sexes 2 debuts with a record five openly gay or bi female contestants

A lesbian-themed episode of the WB's Reba illustrates how mainstream lesbianism has become

ABC's Hope and Faith pretend to be lesbians to get an apartment
Melissa Etheridge announces she has been diagnosed with breast cancer, and cancels the rest of her tour

November 2004

Valerie Harper and Joanna Kerns reprise their 2003 guest roles as Andy Dick's lesbian moms on ABC's sitcom Less Than Perfect
Kinsey hits theaters, with a minor lesbian character
Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason hits theaters, with a minor lesbian character

December 2004

Justine Bateman reprises her guest role as a lesbian mom on Still Standing

Ellen and Alex break up, to the delight of tabloids around the country
