Thankfully, there are also some monogamous bisexual songs in Bif Naked's repertoire. "Everything" is one of her most personal works, and it deals with a straight girl who wasn't interested in her. "It's written from a bisexual perspective," she said in a July 1996 Rocknet interview. "There was this girl
I fancied quite a lot who went out with this really dumb jock guy."
In the song she croons, "I wish you would get over him. I'll change your mind about everything."
For the many lesbians and bisexual women who have had crushes on flirty straight girls, this song could be their anthem.
Aside from writing bisexual-specific songs, Bif Naked has appeared in more than one gay-friendly TV or movie.
Bif guest starred earlier this season on The L Word as a friend of Billie Blaikie in the "Light My Fire" episode. Several years ago she provided the background music for a party in an episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, even performing several of the songs off her then-current album, I, Bificus (her song "Lucky" also appeared on that year's soundtrack). She was even supposed to contribute a song to the soundtrack for Better Than Chocolate, but it was pulled at the last moment for unknown reasons.
With the exception of Ani DiFranco (whom Bif jokingly calls "a righteous babe" on her website), there are few bisexual women in the music business who are as out and proud as Bif Naked. In fact—like DiFranco—Bif takes that stance with nearly all of her liberal causes, representing herself as a vegan, straight edge, pro-choice, bisexual, political punk rock star in a virtual laundry list of left-wing causes and beliefs. In that regard, the comparison to DiFranco is well suited, right down to her politically driven poems, spoken word performances, and self-owned record label (Her Royal Majesty's Records).
As an out bisexual, Bif preaches love over all else. In fan interviews conducted during the 2000 Warped Tour, she quipped that she is "always and forever falling in love" and "so open [that] it's frightening." She also says that whether she loves men or women more depends on what day of the week it is, but her most public crushes are on goth chicks like Fairuza Balk and Rose McGowan (although she's never dated a celebrity of any gender, and tends to keep quiet about her private life).
Whether this makes her the ideal bisexual rocker poster child is hard to say. Her only known relationship was when she married her (male) drummer in the early 90s, and since then she has remained publicly single. While it's nice to have a woman willing to step forward and make such public declarations about her bisexuality, it's hard to determine whether she actually dates women—the "Angelina Jolie syndrome”, if you will.
But regardless of private circumstances, Bif Naked is still a unique role model for the bisexual community--from her gender-neutral and girl-loving lyrics to her many guest appearances on gay-friendly shows and her outspoken attitude towards open sexuality.
Even after a decade of writing and recording hit songs, Bif Naked is showing no signs of slowing down or tempering her image. Her latest album, Superbeautifulmonster, features another healthy selection of bi-friendly songs in her typical pop-punk style. Add to that a successful Canadian tour that wrapped up this past winter, and it looks like Bif's sexually open-minded rock anthems will be keeping lesbian and bisexual women satiated for many more years to come.
