AE:
Are you married?
OK: Yes, I have been married for five years to
the love of my life, my husband, Alex.
AE:
But you identify as bisexual?
OK: Definitely. I can't say Alex is really crazy
about that, but he's accepting of it. I am openly bisexual and
I love women just as much I love men. It's something that you
can't really control; you have it inside of you. Women, I think
especially from an artistic standpoint, for me are like a more
beautiful creation that God made. It's just amazing. It is part
of a lot of my original work.
AE:
Do you find people react negatively to the fact that you're bisexual?
OK: I'm open about it, but I hope people look
more at my work and my music than my sexual orientation. I like
to quote one of my favorite Dr. Seuss lines, "Be who you
are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter,
and those who matter don't mind."
AE:
Are there any women in music that you think are particularly inspiring?
OK: Definitely. I love Melissa Etheridge, and
I like actresses like Angelina Jolie, Madonna, and Ellen DeGeneres--women
who are really outspoken, who believe in themselves and in their
issues. I think everybody should be like that.
AE:
Did you ever want to do anything else besides play music?
OK: One of my other passions is acting. I've
done some theatrical work and several independent films here in
Florida, as well as some commercials and music videos. I find
that in another form of art, you can express yourself in different
ways. I find it very fascinating.
AE:
What has been your biggest challenge?
OK: I grew up as a very shy person, but when
you are in front of the audience, you have to be out there, extroverted.
That is one aspect that I had to work on--to be more extroverted
then introverted. Now I communicate more with the audience during
my performances. I love to talk about different cultures, or tell
stories or mention something funny that happened in my musical
career. That openness and sharing of your own feelings and emotions
goes a long way in this business, I think.
AE:
Anything you would do differently, if you could do it over again?
OK: In
the beginning when I moved to this country and I was going to
high school, there were a lot of people that told me that it is
really tough to make it as a musician, and some of my relatives
were telling me that maybe I should look into becoming a doctor
or something in that field. But then a funny thing happened--I
went to this church and I was praying for a sign to show me which
way I should go, and I heard this beautiful piano music. It made
me realize that without music, I would not be happy.
I
am so fortunate to be in a position where I can solely concentrate
on my music and be creative. Everyday that I wake up, I am just
so happy I chose this path, happy that even though I questioned
it in my teen years, I still chose to go with my heart. (laughs)
And I'm sure there are more people alive today because I didn't
go into a medical field.
