Samantha
fended off rumors earlier in her
career that she was a lesbian, and self-proclaimed friends of
hers who talked to the tabloids at that time reported she was
bisexual. When asked about the rumors in a 1999 interview, she
said "just because I've judged a lesbian beauty pageant
doesn't mean I'm gay...Whatever I am is private."
But
in 2003, Fox told Britain's The Mail on Sunday, she
said "I can't continue denying it. Everyone knows I'm in
love with Myra and want to spend the rest of my life with her."
About
those bisexuality rumors, she told London’s Observer,
“I wouldn't say I'm bi because I'm in a gay relationship
and I love her and I want to be with her forever. So to say
I'm bisexual... it's too shallow. Maybe when I was younger I
thought I was bisexual, but then I think I was just confused.”
Since
then, Fox has maintained a low lesbian profile, but
she is proud of her large gay male fan base. When asked in a
2004 interview with Montreal’s Mirror what Gay
Pride meant to her personally, she answered in “they”
terms rather than “we.” She explained that it’s
about “People being gay and proud of the fact. They're
being honest about it. They're out and they're proud of it.”
As
for her own pride, Samantha has said she resents being labeled.
"All I know is that I fell in love with Myra, who happens
to be a woman, and for the first time in my life I'm really,
really in love," she told the Mirror. "With
guys I was always waiting to meet my prince in shining armour,
but it never happened. Then I met Myra. She's my princess in
shining armour!"
On
her website, references to her sexuality are minimal, and she
still refers to Myra simply as her manager. But
she has embraced her status as a role model, telling the Mirror
that “I get a lot of e-mail from young girls who tell
me they're not afraid to come out anymore, because I've done
it.” She has expressed a feeling of kinship with lesbian
icon Dusty
Springfield, decrying how underrated the singer remained,
and saying she likes to think Springfield looks down on her
and says "You go, girl!"
Fox
is currently at work on her autobiography, in which she will
"set the record straight about the many misconceptions,
myths and travesties surrounding her life, work and image,"
according to her website.
Like
many gay celebrities, Samantha Fox has profited from
maintaining a heterosexual public image. Although she did come
out publicly, she came out very quietly, and has downplayed
her sexual orientation ever since. But with a new album and
an autobiography on the way, perhaps that is about to change.
