Union,
on the other hand, has reportedly been saying how
excited she is about the role and the new direction it represents
in her career. She recently gushed to MTV.com: "It's
the first time I get to be a lesbian, and I'm so excited!
My girlfriend is Annette Bening, and I play this speed freak,
manic-depressive, crazy woman who comes into her life and
wreaks havoc on her family. I don't ever get to play these
characters, so I'm having a ball."
Union
has also reportedly commented on how much she respects Bening,
telling ContactMusic.com: "It was magical to kiss [Bening].
It was a little overwhelming. She is truly a professional
in the sense that she knows so much about the business,
and knows so much about the craft and people respect her
opinion.”
Tabloid
reports maintain that the pair “found lesbian sex
and kissing scenes were much easier than they thought they'd
be—and more pleasant than steamy scenes with men.”
According to ContactMusic.com, Union has said, "It's
just a bit easier and it's a little softer. Strangely enough,
it feels more natural to be with someone outside your own
relationship when it's a woman.”
Union’s
husband, NFL star Chris Howard, reportedly dropped by the
set to watch and wasn’t as disapproving as he’s
been with the love scenes Union has been in with male actors.
"There's something about rolling around with a woman
that most men don't seem to take offense to” she told
ContactMusic.com, adding, “He didn't mind at all.
It was literally one of the first times he was excited about
me heading off to work. I would say, 'It's a 16-hour day,'
and he would say, 'I don't mind.'” She also said that
it was easier for her to perform in those scenes when her
husband showed up on set.
Scissors
is budgeted at $12 million and currently slated
to be released by Sony Miramax sometime in 2006. Burroughs
reports he is pleased with how his book has been adapted,
from what he has seen of it. The screenplay is written by
director/producer Ryan Murphy, who is responsible for the
hit series Nip/Tuck. It is co-produced by Brad
Pitt and Plan B, an outfit that includes his soon-to-be
ex-wife, Jennifer Anniston.
Burroughs
lives in Western Mass and New York City with his partner
Dennis and their two French bulldogs, Bentley and The Cow.
Being gay isn’t the focus of his work but the author
is out. He has said that his sexual orientation was never
hidden nor was it ever an issue growing up, telling the
Sydney Star Observer this past May: “I had
no guilt. I wasn’t trained to believe it was wrong
and when I was a teenager dealing with all that stuff, I
just had other issues, like survival. The
fact I was gay was just absolutely no different from the
fact that I’m right-handed. And that was the way it
has always been in my life. I think that somehow is reflected
in the writing. At least I hear that a lot. People read
me who don’t read gay authors.”
Besides
Scissors and Dry, Burroughs has written
Magical Thinking: True Stories, and a novel, Sellevision,
which has already been optioned for a movie. According to
Variety, Universal has already bought the rights
to his third memoir, which is as yet unwritten and will
be concerned with his relationship with his father.
His
books have been published in fifteen countries and Scissors
has been on the New York Times bestseller list for more
than 82 weeks. It remains to be seen whether the movie version
will share a similar success.
