Another one bites the dust

37-year-old Australian actress Cate Blanchett has decided to cut back on making American movies in order to devote her time to running The Sydney Theater company, to which she has been appointed creative director (along with her husband). At a press conference yesterday, the Oscar-winning actress (and mother of two) who has delivered brilliant turns in films like the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Elizabeth, The Aviator, and Babel, which opens this weekend, said she never wanted to be a Hollywood star, and is “not interested in that label for myself personally”.

Good for Cate for doing what she loves, but this is a big loss for American movie-goers, and I can’t help but wonder if her decision has something to do with the ongoing lack of decent parts for women over 30. You only have to look at the top 10 movies at the box office at any given moment to see how few leading roles there are for women of any age, let alone “older” women (and by that, I mean no longer able to look 25). But I suppose it could be worse – they could be making movies about fashion-conscious dolls. Oh, wait…
