“Alice in Wonderland” teaser trailer smashes through the looking glass

And down the rabbit hole we go. After seeing the first gorgeously trippy promo pictures for Tim Burton‘s new adaptation of Alice in Wonderland, here comes the first trippy teaser trailer. To say hold onto you (mad) hat would be an understatement. We’ve come to expect a certain special mix of crazy, creepy, cool from Mr. Burton. And he along with stars Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Anne Hathaway and Alice herself Australian newcomer Mia Wasikowska do not disappoint.

That’s not just going through the looking glass, it’s smashing through. I’m not even sure I know where to begin. How about the gorgeous visuals? That fall through the rabbit hole is going to look awesome in 3D. Or maybe we should just focus on the characters themselves. We see glimpses of Johnny’s Mad Hatter, Helena’s The Red Queen, Anne’s The White Queen, Crispin Glover‘s The Knave of Hearts and the perpetually-grinning Cheshire Cat, to be voiced by Stephen Fry.

As always, all of Burton’s characters seem pathologically adverse to the sun. Particularly great was Johnny. He looks like Ronald McDonald took some bad acid, went on a bender, stole Willy Wonka’s old clothes and stopped trimming his eyebrows. In short, he looks fan-freaky-tastic. Yesterday, a rough, low-definition cut of the trailer was released on accident. But today, Disney graces us with the finished, high definition version direct its Comic-con debut.

The result is dark and delightful. This adaptation of the classic Lewis Carroll stories follows an older Alice back down the rabbit hole through a mix of live-action, stop motion, CGand 3D animation. So what do you think? Instant classic? Nightmarish re-imagining? All I know is I’ve got a very important date come March 5, 2010.
