“Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” gives us our first look at Saffron Burrows’ lesbian agent

Well, it’s official: (Lesbian) Agent Victoria Hand is coming to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. – next week! Yesterday afternoon, Marvel posted the first images of bisexual beauty Saffron Burrows, and holy Asgardian hammer! Those glasses! That suit! Her hair! She looks just like Hand from the comics! Here, see for yourself:

As I mentioned in my first (speculative) post about Burrows taking the role, Agent Hand is a S.H.I.E.L.D. accountant who gets on the wrong side of Nick Fury and ends up becoming Norman Osborn’s second in command at H.A.M.M.E.R. when they wage war against S.H.I.E.L.D. Her loyalty-shift costs her a relationship with a longterm girlfriend but gains her a whole lot of power. I’m not sure where the show will choose to launch Hand’s story, but I’m guessing they’re going to start at the beginning because her first episode, titled “The Hub,” has Coulson taking a trip to S.H.I.E.L.D. HQ to break a bunch of rules to save Fitz and Ward who are out in the field on a level 8 classified mission. So obviously, she’s a “good guy” for the moment.

None of ABC or Marvel’s press material makes mention of Hand’s sexual orientation, although they do call it Burrows’ “debut” on the show and they gave her an official promo photo in front of the S.H.I.E.L.D. logo, which leads me to believe she’s going to be a recurring character. If they don’t introduce her as a lesbian, it will be a bizarre choice because she comes on the scene in the comics books loud-and-proud and is one of the most notable LGBT characters in the Marvel-verse. It’d be like introducing Maggie Sawyer or Renee Montoya into a live-action Batman show and making no mention of their lesbianism. (A glaring, lavender elephant-in-the-room omission.) If, however, they give a voice to her gayness, she will be the very first LGBT character in Marvel’s TV/movie universe, which is a big damn deal.

Here’s hoping she’s out from the get-go and here for a while!

“The Hub” airs Tuesday, November 12 at 8 p.m. EST. Will you be watching?
