Afternoon Delight: Anne Rice quits Christianity in the name of gays, "History Detectives" find the first lesbian autobiography
What is it about Thursday afternoon that makes everyone so sleepy? I've tried everything to wake up this afternoon — except caffeine because Jillian Michaels made me quit it — but I think Left-Handed Comics may have found a sustainable solution.
Replace "some guy" with "some lesbians" and I think they're really onto something!
Interview With a Vampire author Anne Rice did some religious flip-flopping today. After saying in a Newsweek interview in 2004 that she would "only write for the Lord" going forward, she posted a message on her Facebook wall this week saying she has quit Christianity.
It’s simply impossible for me to 'belong' to this quarrelsome, hostile, disputatious, and deservedly infamous group. For ten years, I’ve tried. I’ve failed. I’m an outsider. My conscience will allow nothing else.
In the name of Christ, I quit Christianity and being Christian.
Rice's son, Christopher, is gay — and even when she was a member of the Christian faith, she was a vocal supporter of LGBT rights.

AfterEllen reader sflyle let us know about the PBS documentary series History Detectives took on the case of Diana: A Strange Autobiography. According to PBS:
The book Diana: A Strange Autobiography tells a sympathetic story of how one woman discovers that she is a lesbian. Few books dealt realistically with lesbianism before the 1960s. This book came out in 1939 with this note: "The publishers wish it expressly understood that this is a true story, the first of its kind ever offered to the general reading public." Experts call this book groundbreaking as one of the first works of gay literature with a happy ending.
You can watch the full episode at PBS.org.
AfterEllen editor in chief Karman Kregloe has instructed me to file this under "DUH!": Danielle Staub's Ex Pal Calls Her Lesbian Relationship A "Publicity Stunt." Danielle happened to start the rumor that she was in a lesbian relationship when she premiered her single on Bravo's Watch What Happens Live. We didn't believe her then. We don't believe her now.
Here's a name we haven't seen enough of around here lately: Leisha Hailey. Apparently, Leisha is going to be on an episode of Drop Dead Diva on August 15th. If she's on screen for any length I've time, I'll screencap her gorgeous face and post it for you!
This Sunday, Logo is having a "Can't Bi Me Love" marathon. From 3:00pm to midnight, you can catch a complete line-up of films with leading bisexual characters.
That's all I've got for you today, kids. All the other entertainment news is coming straight from TCA, and Trish is working tirelessly to bring it to you as it happens! Oh and speaking of being short-staffed, there won't be a Best. Lesbian. Week. Ever column this week, but it will be back next Friday.
Today's Afternoon Delight is brought to you by Sarah Lancaster — because Comic-Com and TCA have me so hyped up for Chuck I can hardly stand it.

I quit Christianity at age 16 for the same reason
Anne Rice did. I guess it just takes some people longer to figure things out.
Now, if Anne would only write a great novel about lesbians - with several sequels, of course.
"quitting Christianity"
I always find it so sad that the LGBT community and the Christian community are always at odds with each other. And it will probably always be like that. True, a ton of Christians are narrow-minded and completely ridiculous when it comes to homosexuality and other issues, but there are plenty of open-minded practicing Christians out there, and churches that welcome the gay community. Because not all of us subscribe to just a few poorly-translated words in an ancient text. To quote Gandhi, "I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ."
Whenever someone questions me, my orientation, or my views, I just tell them, "Well, God made me, right? So there. It's His final word, not yours."
Agreed
Completely well-said!
I do my best not to be annoyed when people ask why I'm not "conflicted" by being a queer Christian. I think she was part of the far conservative end of the spectrum, but I'm not sure why (just my curiousity) she didn't find a church or faith that was more condusive...

GREAT quotes by Gandhi and you... thanks! Exactly what I'm thinking on both accounts. :)
You go Anne Rice...
Yep, I've been studying
Leisha Hailey
If I didn't watch Drop Dead Diva already I'd watch it like a shot after hearing she's making a guest appearance. Awesoooome! She's been missing off our screens too long, even if she is making brilliant music in UHH atm!
Thank you for the History Detectives link, (it was a nice surprise to just discover that I can watch in the UK on their official site, I assumed there would be blocks) it's a bit reminicent of the Sue Perkins Anne Lister documentary thus far :)
Um hang on a minute Anne...
Anne does realise the difference between fatih and religion right? Is she giving up her faith?
Because belonging to a 'group' and believing in something is different. I'm a christian and pretty damn gay.I believe in God not in man and the men that run this world in the so called name of God yet are happy to do the opposite nad condemn people that they don't agree with.
She's not giving up her
She's not giving up her faith.
The rest of the statement she made:
“My faith in Christ is central to my life. My conversion from a pessimistic atheist lost in a world I didn't understand, to an optimistic believer in a universe created and sustained by a loving God is crucial to me," Rice wrote. "But following Christ does not mean following His followers. Christ is infinitely more important than Christianity and always will be, no matter what Christianity is, has been or might become.”
Here
I am an atheist, and I really respect her decision. Unlike some hardcore atheists, I have no issue with people who wish to have and follow a faith, as long as they realize that the system that their faith fostered was perverted and broken long ago and can be quite damaging in it's current incarnation as an organized religion. I respect those who realize that they can have faith and still understand that they needn't support such a corrupt, dangerous organization to do so.
Good for Anne, her statement is thoughtful and moving, and i'm glad she's found peace with herself.
Thank you
for the follow up quote, it's appreciated.
