Afternoon Delight: Kirsten Dunst in “Melancholia,” Whitney of “The Real L Word” in “Who’s Afraid of Vagina Wolf?”

Good afternoon and happy Friday the 13th! Are you scared? I am, but only because my car payment is due.

AfterEllen.com writer Dorothy Snarker will be covering the GLAAD Media Awards in San Francisco for us this Saturday, starting at 4:30 PM. Naya Rivera (Glee), Lisa Cholodenko (The Kids Are All Right) and Sara Ramirez (Grey’s Anatomy) will be in attendance, and Ms. Snarker will be there through red carpet arrivals and the show itself. Follow along to our live tweet with #GLAADawards and #AElive.

The Cannes Film Festival starts today and there is good news and bad news. The good news is there there are a record four women competing for the main prize (the Palme). The bad news is there are only four female directors out of 20 total. Congratulations to filmmakers Lynne Ramsay, Julia Leigh, Maïwenn Le Besco and Naomi Kawase, who recently spoke with Charlotte Higgins of The Guardian about the endless chauvinism in the entertainment industry (and most industries.)

British director Ramsay (We Need to Talk About Kevin) stated that male directors “can be seen as artistic and creative and having huge integrity, whereas women can be seen as difficult and problematic.” Ramsay then likened the lack of female storytellers as “a bit like a country not being filmed — and that country not having a voice. It really does matter.” That’s what we always say!

Speaking of Cannes, Lars Von Trier‘s new film, Melancholia, which stars actresses Kirsten Dunst and Charlotte Gainsbourg, will be premiering at the famed festival. If you’re not a Dunst fan then you obviously haven’t seen her brilliant performance in Drop Dead Gorgeous. Check out this bleak (but intriguing) clip from Melancholia:

A big congratulations to Crystal Chappell and her webseries Venice, which received a Daytime Emmy Award nomination. The Daytime Emmys are one of the first big award ceremonies to reflect that some of the best content is being generated for online audiences. Venice is up for the Outstanding Special Class — Short Format Daytime award. Good luck, Crystal!

The Internet is buzzing in an anticipation to see who will be getting a toaster and joining the out-LGBT celebrity community. The New York Post‘s Page Six confirms that next week public relations and professional outer Howard Bragman will assist a “prominent TV personality” in declaring their gayness to the entire world. Bragman is perhaps best known for escorting Chely Wright out of the closet. Who do you think it will be this time?

If you miss Battlestar Galactica as much as I do (we should really think about starting up a support group), BSG actresses Katee Sackhoff and Tricia Helfer have thrown us a collective bone and released another video from behind the scenes of their documentary Acting Outlaws. Warning, Sackhoff swears like a trucker and compliments her own bulging muscles, so this clip is NSFW.

The Lost Bois have released the video for their first single, “Alone.” I enjoyed the black and white music video, but I question the Something About Mary-inspired hairdo.

Musician Kat Devlin has released her newest music video “Ocean Song,” from her album “The Voyage Out.” The video is like a beachfront lesbian version of Barefoot in the Park.

Actress Christina Ricci claims Oprah saved her life. In an interview with Access Hollywood the 31-year old actress explained that as a child she had a concussion and because her sister watched Oprah she sought medical attention which saved her life. Umm, where were Ricci’s parents during the concussion incident?

Attention ladies of San Francisco, Briana Stockton (Advanced P.E., Work Out) will be hosting a Jet Setter event on Thursday, June 2 at Rebel (1760 Market St.) There will be a BBQ menu, so enough said!

The Real L Word’s Whitney Victoria Mixter and Guinevere Turner have signed on to star in Who’s Afraid of Vagina Wolf?, a new comedy by out Cuban-American director Anna Margarita Albelo (A Lez in Wonderland, Hooters). I have read this script and, trust me, you’ll want to see this hilarious film.
