Afternoon Delight: “Hollyoaks” introduces a transgender character, Olivia Wilde glows in the dark, Jewel goes undercover

Congratulations, friends! You made it through another Monday! And for your reward: All the lesbian news you can handle in one afternoon!

Degrassi’s transgender character, Adam, will make his first appearance on tonight’s season premiere, and thanks to AfterEllen.com reader WritingThis we now know that the British soap Hollyoaks will be introducing a transgender character this summer as well. When The Costellos move to Hollyoaks village, they will bring along their daughter Jasmine, who wishes to live her life as Jason.

According to Channel 4’s website:

When Jasmine Costello (Victoria Atkin) arrives in the village, fresh from American Summer Camp, mum Heidi (Kim Tiddy) and over-protective dad Carl (Paul Opacic) are glad to have their little princess home. Jasmine is the Costello’s youngest daughter and is mollycoddled and spoilt by her controlling Dad and overbearing Mum. It soon becomes apparent that Jasmine is hiding a huge identity secret when she reveals a double life as Jasmine and Jason, her male alter-ego.

As Jasmine battles the trauma, disgust and frustration of living her life as a girl, with the guilt, fear and uncertainty of her second life dressed as a boy, Jasmine is forced on a journey of self-discovery as she realises the pressures and pain of living with GID (Gender Identity Disorder) and the effect the condition will have on her family, friends and peers.

The Guardian has an interesting article comparing Jason/Jasmine’s upcoming fictional story with a real-life stories from transgender teens in Britain.

Olivia Wilde‘s first character poster for the upcoming Tron remake dropped over the weekend.

I don’t know what’s happening with that light-up suit and glow-in-the-dark Frisbee, but I’d be willing to turn off the lights and find out.

In case you haven’t heard, Anyone But Me, my most favorite web series ever, is hosting a web-a-thon July 27 – 29 to help raise funds for their third season. You can get full details at their website, anyonebutmeseries.com. And in the meantime, fans are offering their support in the form of Photoshopped posters. This one’s my favorite:

Trust me, Burns, it’s the best 120K you’ve ever spent.

Lady Gaga preemptively struck at Fred Phelps’ and his Westboro Baptist Church members who planned to picket her concert in St. Louis with “God Hates Lady Gaga” signs over the weekend. She posted a note to her website before the concert that read:

At the risk of drawing attention to a hateful organisation, I would like to make my little monster fans aware of a protest being held outside the Monsterball in St. Louis tonight. Although we have had protesters before, as well as fundamentalists at the show, this group of protesters are hate criminals and preach using lude and violent language and imagery that I wish I protect you all from.

Starz has been scrambling to figure out what to do with the popularity of last season’s breakout hit Spartacus, and they’ve finally settled on making a prequel to showcase the House of Batiatus in its pre-Spartacus days. Lucy Lawless will be back as Lucretia. Jaime Murray and Marisa Ramirez are also joining the cast.

Deadline.com says, “Ramirez will play a beautiful slave girl with complicated relationships.” AfterEllen.com editor in chief Karman Kregloe says, “Hopefully, complicated means gay or bi!”

Seriously, shield your eyes from the Lawless/Murray/Ramirez trifecta of hotness.

Funny or Die is looking to cash in on a viral video of Jewel they produced last week. In the video (below) Jewel goes undercover at a karaoke bar and sings some of her classic hits. The folks at Funny or Die are thinking of following it up with a reality series where popular singers disguise themselves and show up to sing their songs at random dives.

The people’s reactions in the video are my favorite thing ever: “She looked so mousy, but then she started singing and dancing and it was just so sexy!” “I thought she had been a professional, but then they told me she only sings at Christmas parties.”

Glee boss Ryan Murphy inked a contract with The Almighty today. God purchased the eternal syndication rights to the Fox hit show with an option to build a New Directions theme park in heaven in the next ten years. Or something like that.

Hey, Machete released another image of Lindsay Lohan. She’s got a bigger gun this time – but at least she’s not licking it.

Today’s Afternoon Delight is brought to you by Summer Glau. (Laura Ludwigs, you are welcome!)
