Afternoon Delight: Gina Carano kicks ass in “Haywire,” the Fanning sisters sit pretty in “Vogue”

Good afternoon!

Anna Paquin turned 29 over the weekend! The True Blood actress celebrated her big day on Saturday, July 23. Yesterday LGBT activist/Tony Award winner/Glee scene-stealer Kristin Chenoweth turned 43.

My prayers have been answered! Academy Award-winning director Steven Soderbergh (Traffic) has made a female Bourne Identity-esque action film! Haywire stars mixed martial arts Gina Carano as Mallory Kane, “a highly trained operative who works for a government security contractor in the dirtiest, most dangerous corners of the world.” Kane gets double-crossed by her own agency (it happens) and has to learn the truth and fight to stay alive. The film also stars Ewan McGregor, Antonio Banderas and Michael Douglas.

Loving Annabelle director Katherine Brooks is currently traveling around the country working on her documentary Face 2 Face. If you’re in Chicago, join Brooks on Saturday, August 27 for a meet and greet, silent auction and a screening of Brooks’ past work. The event starts at 6 p.m. Tickets will not be available at the door, so please visit www.spyners.com for info on how you can attend the event.

Showbiz sisters Dakota Fanning (The Runaways) and Elle Fanning (Super 8) are featured in Vogue‘s Age Issue. The sisters, dressed head to toe in Louis Vuitton (why do they keep stealing my style?), described their different looks as follows:

Elle: The Virgin Suicides meets Twiggy. Right now I’m into a long, flowing, flower-power vibe.
Dakota: I am in the normal range when it comes to clothes. Elle is not normal.

“Normal” or not, they are both lovely.

This weekend I came across an amazing video of queer rocker Beth Ditto in her undies performing Madonna’s “Vogue” at the Moscow Miller party. Why is Ditto so awesome? Enjoy!

Last week, Stephen Colbert  featured a “Gay History Lesson” on his popular Comedy Central show The Colbert Report. Although I didn’t learn any new history, I did enjoy Colbert’s joke about Eleanor Roosevelt.

Last week I mentioned comedian Julie Goldman (The Big Gay Sketch Show) will be performing a comedy show on Saturday, July 30 at The Renberg Theater in Los Angeles. There are still a few tickets left for the show, Lady Gentleman (I love Julie!), which starts at 8 p.m. If you haven’t seen Goldman live, you’re in for a big treat!

Lesbian/Bi Facebook Status Update of the Day:

Congratulations to Emmy-winning out actress Maile Flanagan, who is celebrating her third wedding anniversary today! Flanagan and her wife, Lesa Hammett, were legally married in California before Proposition 8 passed and therefore their marriage is still recognized by the state of California.

Flanagan writes: “It’s officially our 3rd wedding anniversary right now! 16 years of bliss, 3 more with the state’s blessing! Couldn’t be happier!!”
