Afternoon Delight: Angela Bassett joins “American Horror Story: Coven,” “Bomb Girls” and “Lost Girl” up for Leo Awards

Good afternoon!

Happy birthday to Lena Dunham and Samantha Morton!

The New York Times wrote a great article about the brilliance of Grey’s Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes. The piece, “Network TV Is Broken. So How Does Shonda Rhimes Keep Making Hits?“, starts out with this stellar quote from Rhimes (to the Scandal writing staff), “I love that the gay White House chief of staff is threatening to pretend the first lady is a closeted lesbian, it is so wrong. In the best way.”

Angela “How Stella Got Her Groove Back” Bassett and Patti LuPone have joined the cast of American Horror Story: Coven.

Lady Gaga is back in action! Late last week Gaga performed for the first time since her hip surgery at the Gramercy Park Hotel in New York. Gaga joined jazz trumpeter Brian Newman on stage and sang “Someone to Watch Over Me.” Welcome home, Gaga!

Check out the teaser trailer for French film Young and Beautiful. (Just what the world needs, another movie about a prostitute.) Young and Beautiful will be premiering at Cannes on May 16.

With all the devastating news of some of our favorite shows being cancelled, are you ready for some fresh TV blood?

Be honest, would you watch the 1980s-set sitcom The Goldbergs starring Wendi McLendon-Covey (Bridesmaids, Modern Family)?

Personally, I’m excited to see Battlestar Galactica’s Tricia Helfer return to the small screen with Killer Women. The series, executive-produced by Sofia Vergara, follows Helfner as a “ballsy, beautiful badass” Texas Ranger.

Out actress/writer Michelle Paradise reminisces about her gone-too-soon lesbian Logo series Exes & Ohs.

Jill Soloway (Afternoon Delight, Six Feet Under, United States of Tara) has launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for her docu-series about women, The Empowerment Project.

On Saturday, June 8 Idina Menzel (Rent, Glee) will be taking over the Symphony Hall in Phoenix, AZ.

Check out the latest (and free) installment of Margaret Cho’s podcast “Monsters of Talk.”

And speaking of Cho, the out artist is the recipient of the coveted Tweet of the Day!
