A Gay Girl’s Guide to Comic-Con

I’m a little nervous because this year I’m attending Comic-Con for the very first time. I’ve heard about the beautiful craziness that is SDCC, but I’m going to embrace it by trying to see the most queer things I can, which shouldn’t be too difficult with the great line-up in 2014. Outside of LGBT specific panels, there are events with some of our favorite shows that have gay, lesbian, bi and trans characters, and hopefully we’ll all be able to find our little subculture in the wider geek community.

Here’s a look at queer stuff going on at Comic-Con this Wednesday-Sunday. If I left anything out, holler with your picks in the comments. If you’re going, feel free to tweet me, too! @trishbendix. I’m always open to suggestions, as I’m a CC virgin.

Thursday

2:00pm — 3:00pm DC Digital: Download This!

Out artist Cat Staggs will appear to discuss her work on Sensation Comics Featuring Wonder Woman anthology.

4:45pm — 5:45pm Hannibal: Embrace the Madness

Unfortunately Katharine Isabelle won’t be on the panel, but perhaps creator Bryan Fuller will give some update and insight into what we can expect from Margot Verner in Season 3.

5:00pm — 6:00pm Breaking Barriers: Transgender Trends in Popular Culture

It’s the first ever all-trans panel at Comic-Con! Panelists include Prism Comics’ Tara Madison Avery , Dylan Edwards (Transposes), Melanie Gillman (As the Crow Flies), J. D. Saxon (Mahou Shounen Fight!), Elizabeth Lain (F*** the Limits!: The 30-Day Art Project, This Is Where), Ashley Love (Trans Forming Media, journalist, transsexual advocate), and comics historian Michelle Nolan (Love on the Racks: A History of American Romance Comics).

6:00pm — 7:00pm LGBT Geek Year in Review

LGBT activist and columnist P. Kristen Enos (Active Voice, Creatures of Grace) is hosting Diane Anderson-Minshall (The Advocate), Matt Kane (GLAAD), and Sean Z. Maker (Bent-Con) and myself to talk about all kinds of fun queer geekiness! I don’t want to spoil anything, but suffice to say we’ll be talking about many of the shows we recap on AfterEllen.

Friday

12:20pm — 1:20pm AMC’s The Walking Dead

No Alanna Masterson, but here’s hoping there will be some Tara talk from the rest of the cast and producers in attendance.

The talking heads include Brian Andersen (So Super Duper), Charles “Zan” Christensen (Northwest Press, The Power Within), Dusty Jack (Scuttlebutt Ink, Mahou Shounen Fight!), Grace Ellis (Lumberjanes), Dan Parent (Kevin Keller), Robert Paul(Little Rainbow Comics), and Elizabeth Watasin (Charm School).

3:00pm — 4:00pm Terry Moore

The Strangers in Paradise creator could give us some insight into Fran and Kat’s future.

5:30pm — 6:30pm

6:00pm — 7:00pm Orphan Black

Tatiana Maslany! That’s all you need to know.

6:15pm — 7:15pm Adventure Time: A Totally Algebraic Dramatic Reading

Sky Witch 4-ever.

7:00pm — 8:00pm Queer Horror

Guinevere Turner is the sole woman on the panel, but she wrote American Psycho so she wins. She’ll be chatting about Crazy Bitches, Jane Clark’s (with Guin below) new slasher comedy.

Saturday

10:30am — 12:00pm Comics Arts Conference Session #9: Queering Comics

This should prove to be an interesting discussion! Ayanna Dozier (New York University Steinhardt) “examines the transformative properties of the pornokitsch aesthetic featured in Golden Age comics, tracing the sociological-historical narratives that link pornokitsch to mainstream and erotic comics and questioning their use of gender, race, and sexuality.”

11:00am — 11:45am Once Upon a Time

Lana Parilla and Jennifer Morrison should probably sit next to each other.

12:30 pm: Sailor Moon Official Panel

The Viz animation team will answer all of our questions about censorship of the original series, including the de-lesbianizing of Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune. (Screenings happen all weekend, too.)

1:00 pm CBLDF: Banned Comics!

One title to be discussed: Alison Bechdel‘s Fun Home.

4:10pm — 5:10pm Entertainment Weekly: Women Who Kick Ass

More Tatiana! Also Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones), Katey Sagal (Sons of Anarchy), Natalie Dormer (Game of Thrones) and Nicole Beharie (Sleep Hollow).

5:00pm — 6:15pm True Blood Panel and Q&A

It’s the last one, ever. Anna Paquin, Rutina Wesley and Kristin Bauer van Straten will all be in attendance.

5:30pm — 7:00pm Gays in Comics XXVII: It’s a Queer, Queer World!

100 Butches creator Elisha Lim is part of a panel answering ” What are the responsibilities of creators to their and their audience’s queerness as the radical becomes central?”

5:45pm — 6:45pm Salem

Janet Montgomery and Ashley Madekwe will both be on hand to talk about Mary and Tituba’s titillating relationship.

7:00pm — 8:00pm American Horror Story: Coven

Sarah Paulson and castmates (Kathy Bates! Angela Bassett!) will give some hints about the upcoming Freak Show.

7:00pm — 8:00pm Gays in Comics XXVII: Prism Comics Mixer and Auction

The gayest party all weekend. Mingle with the queer comics creators and fans at SDCC.

Sunday

Responding to Cruelty in Our Culture Actress Chase Masterson (Doctor Who Big Finish, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine) and author Carrie Goldman (Bullied: What Every Parent, Teacher and Kid Needs to Know About Ending the Cycle of Fear) discuss how comics can help with overcoming the bullying problem.
