"The L Word" Recaps: Episode 5.12 "Loyal and True"The real wrap-up — Out in the happier part of the party, William introduces Adele. The rising star, fresh from signing a three-picture deal, begins to talk about Lez Girls. She shares the news about the distribution deal, and then thanks someone you might not expect her to thank.
Yes! And then Jenny steals the microphone (OK, Adele offers it to her) and the crowd offers a show of support. I think I'm smiling for the first time since way back at the beginning during Angelica's adorableness. Jenny makes her own speech, expressing hope that the people who are now entrusted with Lez Girls will honor it. She thanks her "incredible friends" and the loyalty and compassion they've shown.
And that's when the camera cuts to Niki and Shane, who are somewhere out of earshot, having sex against a railing.
Did I say "railing"? I think that's what this plot twist provokes in the average L Word viewer: a lot of ranting and railing. This particular hookup makes no sense, least of all from Shane, who didn't even want to go to the party because she thought it would be disloyal to Jenny. And one more note about sex against railings: Be careful, Shane, or you'll end up with a Nip/Tuck situation on your hands. (Christian f---ed his ex right off the balcony. A nasty business.) Jenny, who is still talking about how much friendship means to her — "more than any movie or lover" — asks whether Niki is there.
Everyone cheers and claps. Oh, Jenny. How many times have I worried about your fragile heart this season? Well, here comes the big one. Jenny goes to hug all of her friends, including the once icy Bette, and then she goes in search of Niki. She finds her on that railing, with Shane's head between her legs.
That is the question of the century. Elsewhere, Tina learns that Adele agreed to change the ending of the movie: Jesse goes back to Jim.
We go back and forth from Shane swearing she's Jenny's friend to the movie people swearing the film will be OK.
William and Aaron insist that the movie is full of lesbians (and that bisexual, Alyse). Speaking of all those lesbians, Bette, Alice, Tasha and Kit have wandered upon the scene by now and want to know what's going on.
I do applaud Mama Chaiken for soldiering on, no matter how many times she heard those two little words.
Just to make everything worse, Jenny, Shane and Niki walk by. The rest of our gang watches the confrontation. (Well, except for Bette, who decides to go get the car.)
Another version of "Walk on By" (Dionne Warwick this time) begins to play as the camera looks out over the lights of the city. Wow. That was ... bleak. A final note — You know how Peter Brady once sang, "When it's time to change, you've got to rearrange"? Well, I'm heeding his advice: My time on the AfterEllen.com staff is coming to an end. No, I haven't been forced out like Jenny or bought out like Dawn Denbo — I was offered a new job I just couldn't resist. (Yes, I'm going to be Peggy Peabody's personal assistant! Uh, I wish.) Although this is my last week as a full-time staffer, I do hope to recap the final season of The L Word, if I have time. Meanwhile, I want to thank you all for being the best audience ever. Your support and insights and hilarity have made me feel very lucky. Two lines from this episode say it better than I can. First, Jenny: "Thank you for putting up with me." And, of course, Kit: "Girl! Girl! Girl! Oh, girl!"

(Missing you already Scribegrrrl) Just a few random thoughts
Just a few random thoughts
And/or questions:
The many Jennys:
If Adele is Jenny Jr. then I guess in the end she really got her Marina (Karina). Or if it was just a spectacle for the gang to see, was it to show how to keep a relationship under wraps properly unlike the real Jenny? I never knew Begona was part of the club, which now that I think about it, would explain the reason why she seemed hurt/horrified when she walked in on Shaun attacking Shane in the make up room.
If Nikki is Jenny (Jesse) in the movie universe, do you think Mama Chaiken was trying to appease the audience a bit by giving us Shenny in a twisted way? Of course while at the same time throwing in an immediate break up with the real Jenny. Jenny’s “You broke my heart” seemed more aimed at Shane then the faux Jenny.
I couldn’t believe Shane would even do that but then I got to thinking about how her and Carmen hooked up by way of Jenny stepping aside and realized … that still had nothing to do with it and still couldn’t believe she did that. And I sooo wished Nikki would fall over that railing.
That dance scene between Bette/Tina was hot, although I don’t get why they felt the need to cut away to Bev/Nina. (And how long has Jodi been filming Bette? don't these people know to stay away from cameras?)
Off Topic: How cool is it that at this very moment Johnny Depp is filming some scenes, in my small Indiana Town, for the upcoming movie Public Enemies also starring Marion Cotillard, Giovanni Ribisi, and Christian Bale. I know I probably won’t even catch a glimpse of him (and really don‘t care), but the fact that there exists a possibility that I’m able to try and pull a Denbo has this small town girl jumping up and down like a gleeful kid in a candy store. (I know it would never happen though)
Scribegrrrl, you will be deeply missed. *sniff* What will I do on Tuesdays now?
"I don't kiss girls who wear doilies"
Ummm... Wow, WTH???
I don't know what to say about this episode, other than Exsqueeze me?? Oh, and Hey Adele, F*CK You VERY MUCH!!
Yes! I must agree with Scribe, Tina has grown, and she does ROCK!! But I can't believe you didn't enjoy that dancing scene with Tibette more than you did... When I saw Tina taking control (again), and leading Bette somewhere by the hand, my heart started beating faster! Then there is the strutting confidence that Tina had, taking her to the dance floor. I had to Simmah down... I just loved it, that was the best scene in the WHOLE episode! I rewound it like
10ummm ok, 30 times. (I still have it on pause in the background as I write this.)Hush now!! I have to wait months to get to see more of the show!
But I have a few questions of my own. 1.) When the gang turns to watch Tibette dancing, Alice says "They belong together" and Kit says "They always have..." I am thinkin "Say what, Girl?" I mean, wasn't it Kit in the episode where Alice busts Bette and Tina's affair out, who says to Bette in the tent: "Did you forget how awful your relationship was... You were miserable..." Or some such nonsense??
Ok, and 2.) Uhhhhhh, Jodi is deaf right? I thought so... Ok so, I want to know not only how the hell she got all that footage, (did she have a hidden camera on thru the whole "relationship"??) BUT... How did she edit it?? The voice of Bette?? How did she know what parts of audio to put where, to get it to sound like that??? The whole F**K me, and STOP IT!! (I Love, love, luhhhved it when Bette was yelling that, and throwing Jodi's hands off of her. GO BETTE!) I just don't get it... someone please, help a clueless chick figure out this conundrum...
I sure hope they don't screw up the final year of the show. **Crosses fingers, and prays to the Showtime P.T.B** If you have any sense at all, and you apprieciate us loyal fans. Give us more of the steamy New Tina, and Bette scenes. Please, Please? Don't make me beg. That's not dignified. Oh, and can we pleeeease see some more of Dana's ghost?? Even once?? **Falling to my knees and groveling** Ok so I will beg for Dana, but that's it! Only for Dana. Fat lotta good that did me in Season 3 eh??
I have to say that life is just not fair. I only recently started reading Scribe's recaps, and now Scribe is leaving us too??? Maybe I should take Tina's advice and just let it go, just try and let it go. Nah! That's ok Scribe... "I was done with you anyway!!" **I'm a liar, and stomp away from the computer crying**
On a serious note... Best wishes to you in your new job Scribe!!! I will miss your wit and lively recaps...
Totally Random...
thanks scribegrrrl
Thanks sooo much for your recaps. Sometimes I may hate the episode but love the recap :)
9 & 1/2 months to go until Season 6.... <sigh>
You Must Come Back!!
Oh scribe,
You will be SORELY missed at AE, but so so so glad to see you will (likely) be returning to recap the last season. It just wouldn't be right if you didn't!
http://legallyout.blogspot.com
I agree with Carolinagrrrl - Scribegrrrl, I miss you already
Ooodles of luck in your new job.
Thank you so much for the brilliant recaps.
I can only hope that next year you will have time to recap TLW's finale season...Otherwise, it would be...wrong.
Me too!
Thanks for all of the great recaps! Good luck with the new job and I hope that you do have the time to return to us next year...it won't be the same without you!
::sniffle::
"I feel like this episode
"I feel like this episode is a Choose Your Own Adventure book and I keep making the wrong choice and ending up abandoned in the desert or on a planet with a toxic atmosphere."
this was such an appropriate analogy! Episode 12 SUCKED!!!
Whatever starts in chaos, ends in chaos
"She does? Surely she hasn't said that this season; we've heard almost nothing from her. We may even have heard more from her mother. Not that I'm complaining."
The original line was "What starts in chaos, ends in chaos." and is from episode 7 of season 3. Dylan had Helena pressed against her office door and was trying to have her way with Helena, when Helena said it.
Bring back Dylan for season 6!
Snark on, girl! *wink*
Like you've been told a gazillion times on this board, your recaps are better than the actual show. As I've said previously (don't expect you to recall, though): you can crack me up with ease but it's the poignant moments in your writing that really stick.
Best of luck at your new digs!
Xiomara
P.S. Here's hoping that Mama Chaiken doesn't kill someone off next year!
Best Wishes, Scribegrrrl.
scribe
Thank you!
I'm so sad...
Uh, I wish.)
Although this is my last week as a full-time staffer, I do hope to recap the final season of The L Word, if I have time. Meanwhile, I want to thank you all for being the best audience ever. Your support and insights and hilarity have made me feel very lucky.
I hope that you do the recap next season as well....I was so looking forward to reading your recaps every week...I'm going to lose JB and Scribe? life is not fair :)
Good luck! We'll miss you!
Thank you for all your work Scribegrrrl!!
I really wish that you find the time to come back in the final season, it won't be the same without your recaps. :-\ Well, best wishes for you in the new job!
And what the hell? Horrible episode....mainly Shane…The writers didn't know how to make Shane finally redeem herself? Soooo... let's take another blue pill to screw continuity...she was drugged so didn't know what she was doing? Is that it? Molly should try to save Shane by throwing her in a Vulcan… maybe the real Shane will come back from Oz then…
I agree that the Jenny's “You broke my heart” was for Shane, though I'm not a Shenny believer. In my opinion, Shane was the only stable thing in Jenny's life since second season when they became best friends... and her speech said how she value friendship.... damn...anyone remember Jenny calling Shane the most "loyal" friend one could have.... yeah, there goes that idea...... at least I think that we finally have a turning point for Shane and she will actually save herself now.....
At least we got Helena back.... and a glimpse of her old Second Season Self back...
I wonder what will be of Jenny in the final season.... as she told us, she is weak....when it comes to love... she was weak when she fell for Karina. Heartbroken. Frail when she had this big crush on Carmen, heartbroken again.....went suicidal…to egoistical psycho bitch…. Ultra dirva….and went and lost her egoistical-diva self and became weakly in love again when she fell for Nikki.... just to have her heart stomped in the worst way possible..... …. Now what? Will she become a full psycho now? A heartless diva that will stop at nothing to get what she wants? Will she kill Adelle, Nikki and torture Shane? Woo!
Aww…. I really wish that she can get a happy ending… I actually like her… … and I really hope they don’t pull another pregnancy storyline in the 6th season for Tibette….I wonder what is left for them…..wait, better not…. Horrible scenarios are crossing my head now….
RE: Bette (I posted this
in a separate thread yesterday):
Okay so I was just over at ourchart.com (*gasps* stone me later. I like to watch what was going on in mama Chaiken's head when making an episode. Afterellen.com is still a hundred times better!), and Ilene Chaiken hinted at the possibilty of Bette having the next baby.
Now I'm a TiBeter as much as the next person but seriously? They've just got back together, (sort of). And hasn't this already been done? Can we say Melanie and Lindsay? And then there's this: In season 3 when Jennifer Beals was pregnant and asked if that could be a possible storyline for Bette and Tina, the answer "Bette would never get pregnant" was given (I think I recall that from one of their many podcasts.)
Am I wrong to be so disturbed by the thought of Bette being pregnant (or them having another kid altogether)? Any thoughts?
"I don't kiss girls who wear doilies"
all the best
scribegrrrl, good luck for your new project :)
loved your recaps, hope you can eventually find the time to recap the final season :)
helicopters and hugs
i think the reason we couldn't tell what the flying object was is because it was our very own deus ex machina, very subtle
and i think jenny totally earned that hug from bette because of her expression when jodi ignored her at the hammer--jenny turned to bette and just rolled her eyes and shrugged--awesome and hug deserving!
It's over
On the boardwalk — Tasha and Alice are strolling along. I think they're talking about Tasha's job, which apparently she has quit. But I can't really hear anything because Tasha's tank top is occupying all my senses.
Oh that tank top was the best part of this Episode. Hot.
Was it just me, or did this final episode seem so much less entertaining than the first 10?
Shane Shane Shane...Real friends don't hump their BFF's Nikki's.
Scribegirrrl, I am going to miss your recaps.

Who doesn't blog these days?
Thank you so much Scribegrrrl.. <3
Eugh now i can't wait for the next season. I love your recaps, even if the episode isdull, your recaps are amazing. they're so wristcuffy ;)
I hope you love your new job. I really hope you can recap for the next season :)
Jenny and Shane was a really disappointing ending. and i wish Adele would just disappear up her own a--...erm nothing =]
It was an ok season Finale, I LOVED the Helena and Peggy reunion, that made the episode for me ^_^
*spit take*
I told you; it's a fancy cigarette! I know it looks weird, but try to keep up.
I can't stop giggling over this one. Thanks, scribe. :D
You must be the change you want to see in the world.

Haha
Thanks Scribegrrrl for all
Endings for new beginnings...
Scribie....I will sorely miss your wonderful writing and fabulous wit. I am so happy for you that you have gotten a new job and I hope it brings you all the opportunities you hope for. Thanks personally for giving me my 'moment' on here. Here's hoping you will still do the recaps.
Now...as to this season finale. YIKES! The only decent part of it was the wonderfulness that is HELENA, tan and tall and young and lovely, and the TiBette reunion.
Adele....What is her game? We still don't know. A little insight please IC.
Jodi....Secret voyeur? That's industrial art? Thought she was better than vindictive bitch.
Denbo's Demise......Anticlimactic
Cindy's awakening.....would have preferred her taking Kit's gun from the trash and doing in DD.
Max's suspenders....only thing holding this character up
Tasha and Alice.....Too many core differences
Shane and Molly....Too soon to end
Shane and Nikki....What were they thinking?
Jenny.....thought for sure SHE was going to take the plunge over the edge.
IC.....where IS she going with this?
Scribe's Recaps.....PRICELESS
Hah!
"Max's suspenders...." Hah! Good one.
As for Shane, it was all ridiculous. And I've always wondered if a real Shane would take so much time over her eye makeup. She looks good, though.
"If I can't dance - I don't want to be part of your revolution."
bye scribey!
Thank you, thank you and thank you scribegrrrl. Your writing has made us laugh, be proud and even moved me in so many ways. You're such a talented person I'm sure you're going to be amazing at whatever you choose.
Y'know I've not even seen all episodes of The L word. This little kooky show was like a side-kick to your writing.
You're the best, Scribe
Scribe, your recaps made watching TLW infinitely more fun. Hope you have a major media job and keep entertaining/informing us in some other capacity. And thanks for never missing an opportunity to point out a good tank top. (Ah, we know what your weakness is.)
Shane clearly set it up so that Molly would leave her. That's the noble Shane. Shane with Nikki was so un-noble, such a betrayal, that it was unbelievable. Shane would never do that to a friend, especially Jenny.
And Bette with the baby comment? Huh? A bit presumptious? Hope Bette was suggesting that she, not Tina, get pregnant this time. I definitely do not want another Tina, the little woman, barefoot and pregnant (and in those awful clothes they made her wear in the first two seasons.)
"If I can't dance (with either Tina or Bette -wow)- I don't want to be part of your revolution."
Aweh.. :(
I hope
THANK YOU!!!
scribegrrrl - you have made a great job. I don't know what to do with the rest of the year. What a finale and now it's all over and we have to wait. I hope we hear from you soon...
Thank you!
scribegrrrl great recap as always, I liked the recap much better than the epsiode (that's not new though).
Good luck with your new project, you'll be missed! I hope you find the time to recap next year's season ^^
;_;
Personally I think IC went, "How can I give people what they want and still piss them off?" for this finale.
Great, there pulling Lana moments now.
That is a T-shirt waiting to happen.
Whaaaaaaaaaaaat?
Well that is one reaction. Personally, I guffawed.
Aww, please come back and visit, OFTEN.
"Bad jokes are us, ur me."
Thank you!
Thank you for another hilarious recap and for sharing your wit and humor with us. You'll definitely be missed.

Scribe!
Episode 12...chopped beyond recognition
My hypothesis is that in light of the season 6 extention, Episode 12 was recut/reshot to not tie up loose ends, but to create loose ends. Since the whole of it was originally shot in LA, it wouldn't take much to reshoot certain scenes to change it. Lousy job in any case.
Scribe, love your entertainment sensibilities! They will be missed, since I usually agree with you. I'm hopeful, you will be able to squeeze in the time to recap the final season for us, since yours is a unique voice in pop culture funny. And I get the best vocabulary lessons from you. Not to mention so many other references. It's like a whole course in pop culture actually. Good luck to you and your endeavors!
PS. Those extended shots of the scenery...probably a love letter to LA from IC.
PPS. Jodi's project requires a suspension of belief so impossible that it makes the Golden Gate Bridge look like tinkertoys. The art style is not her style and the auditory clips are wrong on so many levels but most importantly because she CAN'T HEAR them to edit them not to mention how would she have gotten the clips in the first place even if she could hear!?! Ridiculous. I love me some fantasy (especially of the lesbian variety), but come on!
That drove me NUTS!! So much
I didn't even think of that!
the clips
when my viewing partner said, "where did jodi get the video clips?" i replied, "she stole them from the show." how meta is that?
"Marathon of suck"
Aw Scribe...
I'm going to miss you! I discovered AfterEllen through your recaps, and I've read every single one of them (both TLW and Bad Girls - only started watching BG because you were recapping!). You're definitely my favorite blogger/recapper on AE. Thanks for making this silly show bearable and for making me laugh. A lot. And for introducing me to the magnificence of the Mahna Mahna Muppet. I still smile everytime I see your avatar. Hee.
Aww!
Ok, i agree with everyone else, lol. Your recaps make watching the show in all it's insanity and hilarity 10 times better. Seriously. I'm really gunna miss your writing and i sincerely hope you do get to finish of the recaps for the final season :)
GOOD LUCK!! :D
"If you should see her...tell her I miss her still." -- Galinda. 'Wicked'
So I have a few comments
So I have a few comments (besides the fact that I'll miss your recaps!!!). I was thinking the same thing during the Shane/Molly photographing scene. It was exactly like high art and since when does Shane like taking pictures? We've seen her with a camera (the Max/Alice fiasco) and it wasn't pretty.
You also mentioned Eden Riegel, Bianca from AMC. I used to watch that show all the time until she disappeared. At least she disappeared with Maggie. But they never showed them together much, and now I think they're Splitsville. Meh.
As for Clea and Alice, I don't get why Alice is so amazed about riding on an electric scooter when she rode on her girlfriend's motorcycle so much. Motorcycle > Scooter. My favorite line in the episode would have to be "I didn't give you anything. You stole it." So true. I cheered at my tv on that part. Seeing Niki and Shane have sex made me sick and it was totally unShane to do that. She's too loyal to Jenny to suddenly not give a f---.
*Sigh*
There is NO WAY Jodi could have gotten all of that video/audio footage of Bette unless she had cameras hidden everywhere. And if she did shouldn't we have been let in on it? Completely impossible.
I've also had enough of fuck'em and forget'em Shane. Her behaviour is getting REALLY old. Most women quit being players by the time they're 30. Have a girlfriend or don't but make up your mind. Even the Fonz settled down a little.
Good luck Scribe!
Happened before...
Remember how Jenny wrote in her book and then movie about all those scenes in S1 that she wasn't actually present for? Apparently in their universe there are hidden cameras....
I can't believe Jodi did that to HERSELF. It seemed really unprofessional. And not her type of art at all. So it just came off as middle-school-ish whining about getting dumped. Now, maybe because she's a big-shot she gets leeway? I don't know, but I was seriously embarassed for her.
"Meta" Mark
Perhaps Jodi went out and found Mark, "hidden-camera-voyeur" from S2 and put his talent to personal use;)
Seriously, though, this eppie must have been chopped and changed after the announcement of the show's renewal. I can't believe IC would let her magnum opus end like this one did.
I second that...
I think it all comes out in the wash, and Shane's Kharma will run down her Dogma... Just wait and see.
Like the wash refrence? Tide picture. Heheheeeee!!
~With what you get, you make a living. With what you give you make a life...~
Jenny should....
Jenny should sue the a-- off Adele (invasion of privacy, interference with contract, whatever) AND press criminal charges for extortion. Unlike the studio or Niki, Jenny has nothing to lose, and I'd bet on Tina for backing Jenny up and being a witness. Hey, let's get Joyce to handle this! (Isn't Jane Lynch actually charismatic in this role?)
Why don't they let me write some of the scripts for next season? Or, scribe, is that your undisclosed next job? (I wish!)
"If I can't dance - I don't want to be part of your revolution."
Thank you and take care Scribe
Wow, talk about tossing salt on a wound, Scribe! First a sort of lackluster L Word finale and now you announce you're leaving?
Thank you for all of the time you've dedicated here to improve The L Word episodes for all of us. Really, you do make every episode so much better without having a thing to do with the production of the show itself. That's saying a lot.
Take care and definitely do not be a stranger even if you are unable to re-cap next season. :)
_________
Endings or No Endings
I certainy think the last episode may have been re-cut to leave open endings bc it may have been shot to be the last episode of The L Word if it did not get picked up for another season.
Regardless, I think it's important to say that this season IC really spoke out to the viewers. I think she showed her skills, ya know? What a wonderful show to have the privilege to follow. I feel a very big absence coming after the L Word goes off air. Maybe HBO will make a lesbian entourage, lol. I'm dreaming, why oh why would lesbians be funny instead of OVERLY dramatic all of the time.
Man oh man, when my girlfriend and I were watching the last episode we just cracked up. When Shane starts hooking up with Niki I turn and say "Nooo! C'mon, Shane knows her sh*t. Chicks before...uh...other chicks?" lol What should that phrase be, bc suddenly we decided we could see where Shane became confused (I'm kidding) she's uneducated after all. heh.
Ummm did anyone else see the major problem of Alice dating a cop? Helllllo how much drugs have we seen on this show? I can just SEE how well this convo would go. Alice: Hey guys Tasha decided to become a cop. Shane: Ummm....does that mean we can't hang anymore? Alice: Looks like we're having hiding time. heh
so here's my hopes: I hope that IC leaves the integrity of Bette and Tina's relationship intact. I hope there is no more relationship scandal between them AND: I REALLY REALLY hope they don't go right into having another kid. Especially if Bette carried it, it would make me yawn and rub my eyes wondering if I'm watching QAF reruns. I mean, I'd like to see them be the happy couple. I'm in that relationship ya know, the old wise happy couple that our friends get tired of bc instead of drama we fight about napkin and silly things, lol. I hope in the end there's happiness. I guess that's what us in the real lesbian world are waiting for ultimately. The right to the pursuit of happiness. I know the show can't grant my every wish (the show will suddenly become more inclusive to the spectrum of lesbians and gay men and straight characters) (Dana!) (Alice leaves The Look to join a rock band) (everyone just gets perfect wardrobes, lol no more doilies) but I hope it leaves me hopeful. There's not a lot of hope in this world it seems.
Ahhh Scribe! It seems you've been taking too many notes on IC! Where will you go? Where will you write? We still want to read! :(. I looooove the way you write. Tell Carmen hey for me in the character wormhole to the real word.
Good luck, scribe
