"Exes & Ohs" Recaps: Episode 1.1 "There Must Be Rules"Correction — It's not the dance floor she pulls Jen toward. It's a darkened storage room. Away from the crowd, Jen and the dancing firefighter are going at it without so much as a howdy-do. The P-town sweatshirt finally comes off.
There are eager hands everywhere and lots of kissing, but all too quickly, Jen loses her momentum. Dancing firefighter senses the drop in temperature and backs away. Jennifer's mortified. She apologizes. Jen's more of a flowers-and-candles girl than a what's-yer-name-again? girl. Can't we do both? Oh well. It's still nice to try new things. Back at the party, normally hap-hap-happy Kris is angry. Chris is talking and laughing with a woman they were both dirty dancing with mere moments ago. Kris watches and snorts on jealous disgust. Which brings us to the Lesbian Etiquette Rule. This rule states you can press, bump, grind and hump anyone you like on the dance floor. But off the dance floor, if you so much as ask that same woman which way is the bathroom, that's just wrong. Being a gay woman is very complicated and not for the weak. Just then, the cockatiel gets loose. Feathers are flying. It briefly lands on Jen's head. It flaps out of the room and into the night. Kris and Chris chase after it. Hilarity ensues.
Farewell, Provincetown — The next day at the Beever Café ("Y" eat anywhere else?), Kris and Chris are organizing Missing Cockatiel flyers. They're wearing matching sweaters, natch, the oldest visual gag in the lesbian humor repertoire. And yet, it still works.
Kris is still peeved about Chris' flirtations last night. Chris apologizes over and over until Kris gives in, smiles and buries her head in Chris' neck. Yeah, after that ninth mango daiquiri, it was just the mangos talking. The others force Jen to watch the wedding video that Crutch shot. Delightful. Hasn't she suffered enough? Jen asks, "What's the point of great sex without some kind of emotional connection?" Because some things are their own reward? Oh, Jennifer. You have much to learn. Jen wants more from life than a series of meaningless orgasms. Isn't "meaningless orgasm" an oxymoron? Crutch doesn't get this kind of crazy talk either. Becca, still hanging in there, sits all up in Sam's business, enjoying a piece of Sam's earlobe. Suddenly the cockatiel appears out of nowhere, landing on a hand rail. Kris and Chris think it's a sign and chase after it. The others follow. Alone at last, Jen gazes thoughtfully into the café's fireplace. She takes her Provincetown sweatshirt out of a bag, gives it one last, long look and throws it into the fire. It's a gas fireplace.
Next week on Exes & Ohs: Jen finally starts dating. Kris and Chris make a big decision. Crutch trades some magic beans for a guitar that will make her sound like Amy Ray. Watch Michelle Paradise's weekly video blog for behind-the-scenes anecdotes and answers to your questions about Exes & Ohs. |

"Cooter's Coffee? Or the Muff-In?"
I <3 Bad Machine
It was a different woman.
It was a different woman. The Minister was played by Sheryl Lee Ralph. I don't know who the other woman was but I wouldn't mind having her back.
Wait I found her. IMDb is so niffy. The other woman was played by Nadine Ellis and her character was named Einstein. lol
Anyway, great recap Dara. You and Karman come up with the best lines.
Love the recap
"The Get Over Her Rule is a different formula that has many more variables, requires graph paper and involves π." And finding "x".
Oh man you are spot on with this one. Also, I loved your comment about having a longer relationship with your car, and I can totally relate. Thanks "bad machine" for your recap of "Exes and Ohs".
Thanks bad machine!
Very entertaining recap! My fave line.."being a gay woman is very complicated and not for the weak"
"call me old fashioned but I prefer feminism that leaves a little something to the imagination!"
Am I projecting or mis-hearing?
I listened multiple times and for bad machine's take of "a little melodramatic," I heard "a lingerie model."*
*another possibility, it is late and i am missing some humor, in which case just ignore
definitely
I heard "lingerie model", too.
Watched on the Logo site. Loved it. And the recap: very funny.
Where can I watch Exes & Ohs????
Hey just read the recap, amazing. I have also read all the hype and now I want to watch the show but I can't because I'm in the UK :o( any ideas any one? Is it avail to download via torrent or watch any where else online like you tube? HEEEELLLP??
pssst...
couldn't find it anywhere yet either! But if I do I'll share where. ;)
"call me old fashioned but I prefer feminism that leaves a little something to the imagination!"
hey :)
Lesbian Rules
This just reaffirms my belief, there is a lesbian handbook and they forgot to send me my copy.
I really liked watching this show, there was a part of me that watched some scenes literally between my fingers because I related to it. That's just scary!
Oh, and the ex's being your best friend to torture you forever...I've stuck with straight best friends...this way I'm always right and never wrong. What can I say, I look to build self-esteem anywhere I can.
Great re-cap bad machine...I'll look forward to your next one.
Dara, I haven't seen the
Dara, I haven't seen the show yet, it's airing in Canada only Thursday night. I'm not complaining because contrary to The L Word, Exes & Ohs will premiere only a few days and not an entire season behind the US original airing (season 4 of the l word is currently playing here in wonderful Canada). That being said.. though I haven't read your recap in it's entirety to keep some kind of element of surprise when I do get to watch it, you made my anticipation even greater :)
"Saying your own name in bed must feel kind of weird, though."
Unless your a narcissist, who thinks they're the best lay around, right? lol
I'll be coming back to comment the minute the show is over Thursday night and throw in my $0.02 :D
same situation
Entertaining recap
Very entertaining recap Dara, as always, it gave me the giggles (I'm at work, can't very well bust a gut laughing). I did enjoy the show but the recap made it better. I think the Chris and Kris are ridiculously cute and the dance scene..lets just say I was speechless...I thought I didn't have rhythm. I laughed at the Marla Hooch reference, I thought the same exact thing when I saw Megan Cavanaugh.
Thanks again for another hilarious recap!
"Normal is not something to aspire to, it's something to get away from."
Teeeheeeheee!
"That is Marla Hooch. What a hitter." Completely awesome. I nearly spit out my drink. So happy someone else remembers that line.
Great work, Bad Machine.
Mumbles
My favorite scene...
was when Jen ran out of the storage room...way from said firefighter...all a flutter and distracted and right into Heather. It was adorable how Heather rubbed the smeared lipstick off of Jen's cheek while commenting on how it must have gotten there. Jen had almost successfuly created a great cover story for herself until the firefighter appeared on the scene from the same direction Jen had just fled...and soundly smacked Jen's bottom as she walked by!
That was a great moment...which also gave hope to the possibility of something dveloping between Jen and the supposedly out-of-her-league Heather.
where to watch
for those of you who can't watch on t.v. try logging onto exe's and oh's- showcase.ca and catch the episodes there.
enjoyed every minute of the show and can't wait for the next episode.
I enjoyed the show
mmmmmmBecca.....
love the show
fist off i am so happy that there is something other than the L word to watch. my question is: what do you say to people who will try to compare the show to the L word?
where to watch
I am NOT BY ANY MEANS...
Nitpicking...but the Sista telling Jen that the Dr. was out of her league was not the MINISTER that would be Sherly Lee Ralph...
sorry.
www.myspace.com/blasianbeatnik02
Ha
I was near tears laughing at that last line--hilarious!
I wanna go there
I want to play poker in the Cooter Cafe. LOL.
and Vagina's doesn't sound too bad either :d How about Gina's Muff-In?
Great recap Dara. It's so much better now that I can put a face to the snark :)
PS. You missed those tender and subtexty (sextexty?) Sam/Jen moments in Jen's bed and at the end at Beever's.
Great recap, but...
you forgot to include Sam's line at the end, when everyone except Sam and Jen are chasing after the bird. She says rather wistfully to Jen, "Why chase after something that doesn't want to be caught?", and it is obvious she is referring to herself, not the bird.
It was an entertaining first episode, I look forward to watching the rest of the season on Logo.
Itunes!
What a Hitter...
I'm with several of the ladies on this one...I sprayed soda threw my nose with that comment. I felt so sorry for Megan in that movie! Visuals of their charm school moments floating threw my head..."Gracefully...and brawny..." and Rosie stuffin cookies in her mouth as the instructor's head is turned.
Liked the first episode and yes, what a very instrospective comment by Sam about not wanting to be caught.
How come my gym doesn't come with all the hot looking women in the steam room? I feel left out!
grr
What I needed!
lesbian without borders
Great Recap!
Even better recapper.
Cooter Cafer. Muff-In. Damn you make me laugh. Genius!
LOVE the show so far.
first off: for all of you canadians out there...you can watch the first episode online at showcase.ca
i LOVED the first episode. fresh, funny...and already feels ten times more realistic than the l word (even though i love me some bette).
another comment: how hot are some of the women eh? angela featherstone is oddly attractive despite how strange her character is...does anyone find she looks kind of like lucy lawless? it weirds me out a bit.
and the woman that jennifer meets at the wedding? GORGEOUS.
i love this show already...i hope it keeps getting better :)
haha how typically
haha how typically canadian...i actually wrote "eh" in a comment. i love it!
great recap Dara
LOL girl, I'm so there with ya. isn't it kinda sad that our cars are our longest relationships? or do you have a car thats over 10 years old? :P

Cake envy.
OMG
This was so funny, I had to put my hand over my mouth so many times because I'm at work and I don't need everyone looking at me all crazy..
love it
i thoroughly enjoyed the show (and the recap). nice to have some funny drama instead of angsty drama. i get enough of the angsty in real life.
and is michelle paradise not the cutest? adorable.
Great show, great recap!
XOXO for the Recap!
Enjoyed the recaps!
The show is great...but man if it doesn't hit too close to home! OUCH!
You never know until you find out.
Twins
Is it me, or could Sam, Marnie Alton, be Portia de Rossi's twin?
*waves to Dara*
Told you I was going to come back with my $0.02 ;)
I really enjoyed it, but really did. I love the cast, I have a huge crush on Becca (Cathy DeBuono) and I sure hope we see more of her and she becomes a permanent cast member, the writing is fantastic and I enjoy the pauses as Jen talks back to the screen Awesome.
Great recap Dara.
Poker or anything else...
God I hope they don't write Cathy DeBuono's character off soon. Ever.
This recap was HILARIOUS. But personally, the matching sweaters gag made me painfully uncomfortable.
Finally some QaF-feeling
I miss Queer as Folk. Despite the lesbian-pregnancy-storylines, I loved that show. When The L-Word started, I thought Shane would be my new Brian. But she wasn't half as brianesque as I would have liked her to be.
Now Sam may fill Brians shoes, and I'm happy again. :-) Also, the overall feeling is more playful and comedic as L-Word and reminds me of QaF.
I think I may have found my new favourite show!
love the recap
I just have one question: Where can I find a gym like the one in the show? Does that happen in real life? Damn.
http://onefootinonefootout.blogspot.com/
Yay!
Two things...
1. I watched the first episode on iTunes for free and then decided to buy the season for 9 bucks. I think it's already worth it. The second episode is already up.
2. I freaking want Becca's arms! Gosh darn it!! Where can I buy tickets to the gun show?
All in all, this was a great recap. As always you are a bad, bad machine :-) I actually laughed out loud at a few tmies. My fave lines "Beever Cafe. Really? Not Cooter's Coffee? Or the Muff-In? How about just Vagina's?" and "That is Marla Hooch. What a hitter"
I can't wait for the rest of the season recaps!
