"Bad Girls" Recaps: Episode 3.12 "Tough Love"Wrapping things up — The two Julies are glum and silent as Hollamby and Gina process them for departure. Hollamby says they look like they're going to prison, not leaving it. It doesn't exactly get better when Julie S. claims the last of her possessions — a bunch of condoms. Julie J. is a lot better at expressing her jealousy than Helen is — and the Julies aren't even a couple! Speaking of couples, Thomas and Helen are getting ready to go to the conference. The sensitive doctor suggests that they stop for a bite to eat on the way, at a "pub along the river." Retch. Inside, Josh tells Caroline to pack her things. Maxi overhears and goes right to Nikki.
Nikki grabs Maxi and slams her down against a nearby table, but it doesn't stop Maxi.
And she offers Caroline's file as proof. As Nikki reads it, the easily provoked prisoners start chanting, "Nonce! Nonce! Kill the nonce!" They all march toward Caroline, so Josh pushes her back into her cell for her own safety and presses the emergency call button. Nikki looks both worried and disgusted. She turns around to see Helen watching too, looking just plain sad and sorry.
Wow. That was quite a revelation. I don't quite understand why it would have meant Nikki's downfall — it's not like she knew Caroline was a nonce — but then again, all I know about prison I learned from this show. Which is pretty much the same as not knowing anything, I'll bet. A lame ending — The two Julies are on their way to life after Larkhall. Or are they? As Julie S. embraces her son and Julie J. tries to go her own way, some detectives show up. They're investigating some thefts and a call girl ring, and they're putting the two Julies right back under arrest. Silly. NOTE: There will be no Bad Girls recap next week. The next new episode will air Nov. 29 on Logo, with the recap to follow Dec. 3. NEXT TIME ON BAD GIRLS: Yet another newbie arrives; Al continues to pick on Shaz; Di Barker is back. |

such a great episode!
this is such an awesome episode. nikki and helen take you up and down and up and down again!
when you think helen is moving caroline out of spite, u just wanna scream at the tv (of course, you wouldnt actually yell at the tv.. not at all... nope...) but in the end its all ok, helen still cares about nikki, even if she is going on that course with floppy thomas... euch
i gotta agree that the whole julies story line is a bit off, but u gotta love them
oh, and btw, i dont think tina purvis pees herself, i think its a bottle of water that she squirts on the mattress. would be entirely too gross otherwise...
anyhoo, keep these recaps coming, i'm a brit who's seen these eps about 3 or 4 times, but its awesome to see how you guys view it first time round. and of course, the recaps make me laugh out loud every week!!
Ah..
Helen still cares, she just doesn't want anyone to know... and even if she hurts Nikki while she is in this state of "oddness".
I also find it quite interesting to see these views from someone's first time watching this series. I also find it odd that they showed the series in South Africa before America, that's a major first! I'm not complaining though.
Anyway the recaps are brilliant.
always
Helen luvs Nikki & she said "i will get u out"
so no matter her intreasts while Nik is locked up
she will be loyal to Nikki
Wow.
Scribe, I have to admit, I was smiling and nodding throughout this recap. Kudos.
A few things:
1) I think this has to be one of the episodes I've watched the most (because it is so good, and by good I mean torturous), and I STILL don't understand why Helen becomes the demi-god of frowns, injustice, and and absolutism.
2) Not that Helen's done much speaking up for you lately, Nikki! NO KIDDING! Nikki's loyalty is inspiring. It makes my heart happy.
3) Nikki grabbing Maxi and raising her fist menacingly was just plain awesome - even though Maxi was right. In her own way.
4) Nikki's pretty smart, isn't she? Yes. yes she is.
5) I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks David, son of Julie J, is a homo.
6) Kind of interesting for Helen to be gazing out through bars, isn't it? Indeed - an Us and Them roll reversal, if you will ....
Lastly ...
Whoa. If they're both going to insist on being this nasty, who am I supposed to root for? Wait up, Caroline!
This is the only point I disagree with you on. I think Nikki is totally right - I think Helen has consistently used the power play over Nikki throughout their messed-up, confused relationship. Part of that is by virtue of Helen's position alone. The other part, I think, is just Helen. Especially in this episode. She has exerted her power, unnecessarily - by not telling Nikki about Femi's well-fare, concerning the strike grievances, her conversation with Barbara, about moving Caroline (even though her intentions were honorable ... in a twisted way).
And after all this - doesn't therapy sound like a good life-choice for Helen?
...and she's called Henry and it’s a lot of explanation but don’t worry about it kids, Ok? Just tune in, turn off, drop out, drop in, switch off, switch on, and explode.
Spot on...
Kudos pirategrrl
Nikki's rant was a long time coming...
Right? Helen needs to take
Right? Helen needs to take off the power suit.
and thank you, btw. :)
Yes...
Helen does need to take off that power suit...haha
I just think that Nikki needs to tell Helen how it is more often. They never really have a chance for a proper go at each other.
*Schmick as*, Scribegrrrl!
Awesome recap to a great episode. And, as a lifetime member of the
Nikki Liberation Front, may I commend you on your screencap selection?
Ooooh, baby...
Kind of interesting for Helen to be gazing out through bars, isn't it? It harks back to that time Nikki peered down from her cell to see Helen and Dominic chatting.
Except Helen has nobody to blame for her incarceration (or her thwarted desires) but herself.
i) great observation; and
ii) wonderful line!
I feel sorry for Helen. Repression makes for a big mess. Look where it has taken Helen: petty power trips
(I keep waiting for her to delete Nikki's user points!); needlessly nasty comments;
and -- perhaps worst of all -- a conference with Thomas Waugh. (And Helen Thomas, one of my heroes, is way
hotter than Helen/Thomas). I mean, I've attended academic conferences with really hot women,
and they still felt like a prison sentence!
Nikki: We wouldn't be just a teeny bit jealous, would we, by any chance?...
Helen: Don't be ridiculous.
I know you are, but what is she?
Wouldn't that make Helen a Pee-Weeny bit jealous?
(I'm sorry about that; I've been watching a lot of the Sarah Silverman Program lately...)
Helen: *Delete delete
Helen: *Delete delete delete* game over, Wade.
Nikki: *type type type* I'm going for negative points now!
Dr. Waugh: *edit edit edit* I should stop comparing academic papers to prison riots.
Sarah Silverman: *points points points* Doug, dating God has become such a drag.
Nikki and Caroline
I don't quite understand why it would have meant Nikki's downfall — it's not like she knew Caroline was a nonce — but then again, all I know about prison I learned from this show. Which is pretty much the same as not knowing anything, I'll bet.
i) Good one, Scribey!
ii) It's purely guilt by association. If you were in prison and you had *anything* to do
with a dog or a rock-spider, you'd be considered as bad as they are. This is why a lot of people refuse to
go into protective custody; even to be in that space, with those people, is enough to see you judged as one of them. It would be disastrous for a prisoner of Nikki's standing in a women's prison.
Excellent Recap
I saw this episode a few months ago, but as soon as I started reading the recap it all came back to me. And I guess its just me but I love Helen regardless on if she is being a authoritarian bitch or not. In fact its kinda sexy.
How sweet that Helen tried to look out for Nikki, she still loves her she just doesnt want to admit that to herself or anyone else. But I have faith that everything will be okay.
Can someone please kick Maxi's ass? Hot or not she is the type of villain you just cant find something redeeming about.
Side note, Shaz is annoying.
Fantastic recap!
lesbian without borders
from now on Bad girls will better.
Darn DVR!
I was outta town and I had this episode and the episode before this one on the DVR. Anyway, I knew the DVR cut the episode a little short, but I thought I would just catch it when the next episode airs. This is what I missed.
I knew there was something not right about Caroline, but I did not get to see the "reveal". So I didn't get to see Nikki throw down Maxi. Didn't get to see Nikki being humiliated and sickened by everyone calling Caroline a "nonce". \
And even though I knew the Julie's would have to end up back inside eventually, I didn't get to see them getting immediately arrested as they walked their first steps to freedom.
These things were kinda important things to MISS. Thanks for the wonderful, as usual, recap.
Cruel DVR! Great episode.
Nikki's Deep Sexy Voice!
Great recap Scribegrrrl! It is a shame Nikki had to loose Helen just because she tried to be head bloody prefect. Just like Helen wanted her to be in season #1. Now that Helen has gotten to the top of the shit heap, she dosen't need Nikki anymore. I love Nikki's deep sexy voice and those wonderful stares she gave Caroline. Oh dear! Oh dear!
Thats me off.
Top of the Heap
Nikki's deep, sultry, sexy voice and her steamy stares...Oh, good gosh! That does it for me too.
Tough luck to the Chief Screw.
A little song in tribute...
Helen and Nikki
Sitting in a tree
Power T-R-I-P-P-I-N-G!
It’s Over?
Whatever, Helen!
It’s fantastic to see Nikki taking a stand for her mates - standing up for herself - giving Helen some lip… speaking of stalking , has the governor’s office always overlooked Nikki’s little work-yard or is that a new Acting Governor thing ? Hmmm… Therapy, that’s a good call. Helen should schedule a session with Dr. Waugh to discuss her obsession with Nikki, her homoerotic desires and pent-up sexual frustration, stress induced paranoia, oh yeah, and her need for absolute control in a relationship. Maybe she can work it in when they’re away at conference.
Oh yes, and Nikki was quite fetching on her bunk… I could see it in her eyes: “I’m so over this cr_ _” I just wanted to take her in my arms and tell her everything would be alright, and then…. wait a minute… that’s Helen’s job, she’s the one who needs to make it right with her girl.
It was really hot , while it lasted, to watch Nik off of her Stewart-chain and romancing another woman, you know, the way it should be done. Were you taking notes from your spy window, Helen? I hope so.
Sweet, sweet Barbara - how she braved the wrath o’ Helen to put a good word in for her pal Nikki. Their friendship has always been like an island of sanity in a sea of dysfunction. She’s been the Mrs. Middle England mum that most of the girls on the wing have never known.
What the hell crawled up her ass? Thanks Scribegrrrl, awesome recap - I needed a good laugh after this episode very nearly traumatized me!
Over and... out?
Therapy, that’s a good call. Helen should schedule a session with Dr. Waugh to discuss her obsession with Nikki, her homoerotic desires and pent-up sexual frustration, stress induced paranoia, oh yeah, and her need for absolute control in a relationship.
Now, I know this is a controversial invocation, but Helen's pre-therapy paranoia immediately brings to mind Freud's argument that paranoia
is a defence against latent homosexuality. I mean, she's no Schreber, but if she starts thinking God wants to anally impregnate her with His child... well, *we* know what's going on...
As for a therapy session with Dr Waugh: he really is a soap opera doctor, isn't he,
specialising in *everything.* I might have missed something, but I thought he replaced Dr No-no, which means he should be writing scripts and dressing shiv wounds. But, no, he can
diagnose serious mental illnesses, has done a TESOL degree (or is that art therapy, based on his communication with Femi), gives Dr Phil-style assertiveness training to bullied baby dykes... If only he'd been around eariler, he'd have cured Zandra of smack addiction, given her a makeover with new face-suiting specs, and diagnosed her brain condition before performing the surgery. I'll say nothing of Helen and gynaecology;
that's for a later re-cap.
"Nikki. . . .would ask Dawn to poison their food with nuts. 4.She would ask Shell to stab them with a bottle. . . .trolls either kill themselves with toilet paper or die from choking..." (Hearer, "The New Flirting Thread")
oh,
how I've missed you!
and your new sigfile.
And thus the whirligig of time brings in his revenges....
The Best Defense
I just had to rant on Helen after she made Nikki cry (again!). I understand why it is absolutely necessary for her to assert her authority and why she felt betrayed by the riot, but given that Hollamby is her acting first officer and the Peckham gang is wreaking havoc on the wing, I’d say she has bigger problems than the question of Nikki’s loyalty. Helen only needs to pull her head out of her ass (excuse my rant) long enough to figure that out.
Yeah, Dr Waugh seems like a good whipping boy, although, I’m inclined to think a woman like Helen will tire of him quickly and return to yanking Nikki’s chain.
For goodness sake, if I start taking these character’s anymore seriously I’ll be in need of intervention!
Here's to later recaps.
Thanks Again
Great recaps. Thanks, if for nothing else the education of the word 'nonce'.
I come here to these recaps to get the meanings behind the meanings of the words they sometimes use, and use and I can't understand!
Your in depth explainations are always dead on for what I am after.
Thanks Thanks Thanks!
