Episode 10 “The Girl Who Grates"

by D. Yueh

Amanda
Eugena CariDee

The Twin Stands Alone — Well kids, it finally happened. Twins Michelle and Amanda, who have clearly never been anywhere or done anything apart in their whole lives, were finally separated at panel last week. Amanda tells us: “Michelle went home because when they asked her who she thought the weakest person was, she said herself. It was her own choice to tell them how she felt, but it still feels like, ‘If you wouldn’t have said that, you’d still be here, but would I?’ I kinda feel like she made a sacrifice for me.”

It’s debatable whether Michelle fell on her own stiletto to give her beloved twin a better chance. Perhaps it was just because she couldn’t walk in heels, act, find her way from point A to point B (even with a partner and a map), or win a single challenge.

Michelle left Amanda a note before she left. It said: “Twin! You better kick ass! Don’t worry about me @ all. I’m just fine. Seriously, I’m completely OK. You need to stop second-guessing uself and just be you …” I can’t read the rest because I’m too cheap to splurge on the crisp clarity of a digital video recorder and have to recap using a 15-year-old VCR.

At the bottom, I’m pretty sure it says, “BTW, I know fer sure I’m gay. ’Member that night after the celeb couples shoot? Brooke and me … well let’s just say Portia and Bobby Brown got to know each other a little better.” OK, she didn’t say that. That was totally just me and my pervy mind.

Tyra Mail — Melrose reads, “In the modeling industry, working with a partner has many pros. You just have to keep them from stepping on your toes.” And from body-checking you out of the shot, if your partner is Smell-rose.

Dancing With the Stars — The girls are taken to a dance studio, where they meet instructor Nacho Blanco, which is Spanish for “White Corn Chip.” This isn’t the same Nacho from the other episode (the racist who didn’t like black girls). That was Nacho Cornholio.

Nacho is tiny. Tiny Dancer. He doesn’t speak English, so there’s also a woman translator standing next to him. “As you know, in the world of fashion, normally you work alone,” he says. But today, he explains, the girls will learn how to dance with a partner.

Four guys file in and line up across the room. That old manhound CariDee’s eyebrows go up at the very sight of them. And five-six-seven-eight … they all do a quick, synchronized flamenco number.

Eugena looks disturbed by it all, but CariDee laughs flirtatiously, and the others clap politely. Tiny Dancer tells the girls “pick a guy.” CariDee probably wants them all to herself, but they basically just pick the one standing in front of them.

Amanda tells us, “The idea of dancing just makes me really nervous because I’m not a very strong dancer.” And not a very strong walker either, but why rub salt in it?

The translator tells the girls that first, Tiny Dancer wants them to learn some basic flamenco steps. He demonstrates and says in time with his feet, “Bahng, bing, bahm. Bahm, bahm, bing, bahng, bing.” Um, can you show me that bahng bing part again? I think I was doing bada bing.

The girls follow his footwork a few times to get it down. Eugena says, “It was easy for me, because I do have rhythm.” Yeah? Well, I got music, and I got my gal. Who could ask for anything more?

They need to put Amanda in special dance ed, because she “looks awkward, as usual,” according to Eugena. Amanda's sweet face is seriously confused, and Michelle’s not there to make her look good by doing it even worse. Melrose isn’t much better, frankly, and she keeps having to start over from the beginning.

Tiny Nacho is so impressed with Eugena’s grace that he asks if she’s done flamenco before. She gets all “aw shucks” about it. Meanwhile, Amanda needs Nacho to come over and actually move her legs with his hands. His instructions baffle her. Choreography is hard, even if you have the right teacher.

She hoists both arms above her head. She looks like she’s trying to land a plane.

Tiny Dancer tells the girls to practice at home because they’ll be tested tomorrow, and he sends them home with blisters.
