Ellen DeGeneres Joins "American Idol" as Fourth Judge
Fox announced in a press release today that out comedian and talk show host Ellen DeGeneres will be joining their popular singing competition show American Idol next season as the fourth judge. "I’m thrilled to be the new judge on American Idol," said DeGeneres in a press release. "I’ve watched since the beginning, and I’ve always been a huge fan. So getting this job is a dream come true, and think of all the money I’ll save from not having to text in my vote.” DeGeneres joins current Idol judges Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and Kara DioGuardi, replacing departing judge Paula Abdul, who reportedly left the show due to contract disputes. Creator and executive producer Simon Fuller said, "I could not be more excited to have Ellen join the American Idol family. Ellen has been a fan of the show for many years, and her love of music and understanding of the American public will bring a unique human touch to our judging panel. I can’t wait for this next season to begin.” Ellen's Emmy Award-winning syndicated daily talk show, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, averages over 8 million viewers per episode, making it one of the highest-rated daytime TV shows. American Idol averages between 20 and 30 million American viewers per episode, and is broadcast to over 100 nations outside the U.S. Although ratings have been slipping in recent seasons, the reality series is still one of the most-watched shows on primetime American television. American Idol has never had an openly gay, lesbian or bisexual contestant. Several contestants have come out after appearing on Idol, however (or been out before the show and de-gayed their public profile during the competition), including Clay Aiken and, perhaps most famously, Adam Lambert, who was the runner-up last season and graced the cover of Entertainment Weekly with the headline "The Most Exciting American Idol Contestant In Years ... and Not Just Because He Might Be Gay." Lambert, left, with Idol winner Kris Allen and host Ryan Seacrest The show's ninth season kicks off in January 2010, and will feature appearances by guest judges Victoria Beckham, Mary J. Blige, Kristin Chenoweth, Joe Jonas, Neil Patrick Harris, Avril Lavigne, Katy Perry and Shania Twain. DeGeneres's Idol gig will not interfere with The Ellen DeGeneres Show, which began its seventh season this week. "I'm not leaving here," DeGeneres reassured Ellen fans. "I'm going to have a day job and a night job — that is the times we're living in." "Hopefully, I’m the people’s point of view because I’m just like you,” DeGeneres went on to add. “I sit at home and I watch it, and … I’m not looking at it in a critical way from the producer’s mind. I’m looking at it as a person who is going to buy the music and is going to relate to that person.” DeGeneres's role on Idol makes her one of the world's most visible lesbians (if she wasn't already). It also means Ellen will join her wife Portia de Rossi (Better Off Ted), comedian Wanda Sykes (The Wanda Sykes Show and The New Adventures of Old Christine), and political commentator Rachel Maddow (The Rachel Maddow Show) as one of the few out lesbians — real or fictional — on primetime American television this season. Haha
Me as well.. I never watched
yay
Haha! Wait, what?
I honestly thought this was a joke, like one of your fake lesbian news skits that you do. Not that I'm not happy that Ellen got the gig! I'm estatic! It just seems a bit from left field, right?
You are right
I agree as well. Is it wrong
I thought this was a joke too!
not true about american idol contestants not being out..
WOOT WOOT!!
I haven't watched the past couple of seasons but I will def be watching when it comes back on.
I thought it was a joke when I first saw it....it just kinda came out of now where.
But I think she will do a fantastic job!!

I don't know, at least Paula

Um
whoa! ELLEN!
my only reaction
really?
really?
why?
Um
Because she's funny?
Anyway I'm so glad that she's the new judge because I haven't watched American Idol since Carrie Underwood won. SO maybe now I'll have a reason to watch.

i agree
I love Ellen....but I dont understand why she's a judge.
She's there purely for entertainment purposes.
Ellen will be 1 the
Ellen will be 1 the entertainment and 2 the people's voice. She has been a fan for YEARS and like she has said on the announcement on her show, has never missed a show.
She'll be voicing what perhaps a large amount of the fans think when watching. She already said it that she doesn't have the 'technical' part down, but she is a fan of music and she bring more of the people's side to it
The Way The Cookie Crumbles
No Borders AllowedAt this point the whole show
At this point the whole show is there for entertainment purposes =P
I think Ellen is fun and will do great, not to mention the visibility of a Queer person on one of the most popular TV shows.
ok ok
Ellen!
Wow, I thought this was just speculation when I saw this on twitter earlier but...wow...AWESOME!

cool for Ellen but.....
wha?
OMG OMG OMG OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
OMG i'm just too happy Ellen is my older woman celebrity crush!!!!!! woooooow i'm sooo going to watch this season
True feelings can never be put into words.
therfore when you can't explain how you feel about someone that's when you know..
Ellen and Idol
She's actually going to be a judge? Like a permanent judge? I love Ellen but I saw her as a judge on SYTYCD and while her critiques were funny, I hope she doesn't do that every week. Because that would get tiring pretty quickly. There have been so many problems with the judging, time wise, especially with having four judges last season that they could have just left it with three. I don't take Idol seriously at all so maybe this will be a fun change.
Wow...this means I might
It's cool
Okay, I'm an Ellen fan and
Okay, I'm an Ellen fan and all and am definitely excited to see her on AI, but this is just such odd news. I just hope she doesn't get too much backfire from the audience seeing as she has no musical background.
I mean, she'll be able to bring humor and the perspective of the average viewer into the critiques, but is that really what the show needs? And like another poster said, the constant jokes she did on SYTYCD, while absolutely hilarious, could become trite.
But on second thought, although Paula did bring a lot to the show, she never really gave critiques that were as helpful as the other judges anyway. Maybe Ellen will be even more help. We'll see I guess!
Just had to say...
I love your icon! It's awesome!
~Renée
WOW!!
Every time I hear it I still freak out!! I love Ellen & now I get to watch twice a day twice a week starting January...
At first I was like, wtf!! I watched her on SYTYCD and after a while it just got really weird 'cos all her comments were basically the same. I hope that's not gonna be the case w/ AI.
I agree though, it's a little out there b/c we can all admit that she has little to no musical experience. At least she'll be funny
That is so awesome
I might watch it this season now. This might be good because she will actually be sober unlike some people.....
www.myspace.com/guitarrachica
so i might actually start
so excited...
i love ellen but i might not
Dropping ratings + popular
Dropping ratings + popular new judge = more viewers
The makers of the show definitely did their math-homework... I still don't think it's a good choice. Don't get me wrong, I love Ellen, but I think she should stick with what she does best: comedy! Her daytime show also lives from the funny interaction with her guests... I'd want a jude to be somewhat credible when it comes to music.
But maybe I'm just biased because the German version of the show is just plain crappy! Luckily none of the winners have ever released more than one album, the runner-ups are forgotten even faster. But everybody involved in the show (contestants and judges) does a great job in filling the cheap tabloids...
I don't know what American Idol is like, the only good thing about the German one is the first few episodes when they show all the people auditioning who can't sing whatsoever and then are really disappointed that they can't move on to the next round. And they're so upset about the insults that one of the judges threw at them (he's been doing that for 6 seasons now, shouldn't be much of a surprise anymore)...
i hope...
that it's a good career move for her. we can't afford to lose another good lesbian on tv!

Wow
How much?
Doesn't Ellen have enough money? It's sad to see her sell out like this!
Yep, that's why I feel the cringe
Exactly why I get upset when Ellen and Lena Heady, and anyone else for that matter helps out the FOX network or anyone they work with. I just think it's messed up, I know these actors have to make career decisions, but I can't help but feel like they're putting money into the pockets of people who will put money into organizations that are fighting queer rights, promoting fundimentalist behavior, and doing shady things to get people like George Bush elected (I will never forget the elections, I just can't)....... I wonder what Rachel Maddow would say to this (privately of course)....
Of course it would give the whole thing a twist if Ellen negotiated a super hefty paycheck and then put all that money into organizations working for queer rights and visability, and supporting Obama's Health Plan! Then I could get into the idea a bit more....
wow... I might even turn on
wow... I might even turn on the telly this season!
that show have really been going down the hill the past few years. Lets hope a little 'Ellen' can spice it up :)
they won't have to worry about ratings now
Wait, what?
Love Ellen, but have no idea how this is going to work. *worries*
yay
Will watch
totally thought this was fake
How
How is Ellen qualified in any way to judge on American Idol, she doesn't have a music background at all. I guess she will be there for entertainment purposes not the help the contestants in anyway. This is even more random that Alesha Dixon replacing Arlene on Strictly Come Dancing.
Wow I might actually watch
Wow I might actually watch American Idol this time around. But only because Ellen's awesome
I think that's what I find most strange about this world. Nobody ever says how they feel. They hurt, but they don't cry out. They're happy, but they don't dance or jump around. And they're angry, but they hardly ever scream. Because they feel ashamed.
oooohhhh
I wans't sure if I'd bother
I wans't sure if I'd bother to watch this ses, because I only watched like last ses. when they were to the Top 13 because of Adam. Then ended up liking Allison & Kris as well. XD
But then they said NPH would be in one ep, and I was all I'll watch at least that one and now this, so I'll probably watch it. XD
But I saw her ep of SYTYCD and that was just odd. lol. Like what was the point? But I think since this is more than just a guest judge thing she might actually take it more seriously and stuff. *Shrugs*
Also umh, I think it was kinda obvious that Adam was gay. lol. Like he said in Rolling Stone he was never really in the closet to start with. XD I mean, when would have been the best time to bring up BTW, I'm gay and not in a weird, shoved in way?
It was just more focused on him as a singer and performer than his sexuality. *Shrugs* I think they asked him what he wanted to do when those photos surfaced of him and an ex-boyfriend and he decided to like say nothing or something.
He wasn't trying to hide anything. If he was, he did a really bad job of it. XD And he in the Rolling Stone Article he practically starts with "It should come to no one as a surprise that I'm gay." So yeah. XD
But Clay Aiken, eek. That dude creeps me out and always has, and HE tried to hide shit... for years. lol. And look how that worked out for him. But obviously they are two TOTALLY different guys.
Yeah, I'll shut up now. XD
I
