"True Blood" Promises a Lesbian Character — For Real This TimeEvan Rachel Wood has joined the cast to play Sophie-Anne Leclerq, the Lesbian Vampire Queen of Louisiana. How's that for a label? Evan Rachel Wood at the Young Hollywood Awards Wood played a lesbian/bisexual teen in the ABC drama Once and Again (1999-2002); quasi-bisexual teens in Thirteen (2003) and Pretty Persuasion (2005); and a lesbian in The Wrestler (2008). Movieline caught up with Wood at the Young Hollywood Awards, where she was receiving the Young Hollywood Superstar award, earlier this week. They asked her to finally open up about her role on True Blood, and her passion for the project did not disappoint. She said: Oh! I love being able to talk about that now. I've had to be so secretive about it. She's 400-years-old. Her name's Sophie-Anne, and she's the Vampire Queen of Louisiana. There's a queen for every state, and that's hers. And she's kind of a cross between Patrick Bateman and Paris Hilton. She's crazy. She's just crazy. And she's a lesbian. After living for a half-millennium, I guess Sophie-Anne knows what she wants! Movieline followed up, asking Wood: "So who's your lesbian love interest?" Wood answered, "I haven't really met the woman yet, but, well, she's not really a love interest. I'm just fff... um, fffu... I just feed from her." You'll have to fill in those first two "F"s yourself; I've watched the video a dozen times and I can't quite make out whether Wood is stumbling or self-censoring. We were able to get the casting side for the role of Sophie-Anne's not-really-love-interest, Hadley (h/t to indie!) and it reads:
Wood confirmed that she's only filmed two episodes thus far, but that the producers plan to make her a recurring character. At least three of those scenes will be filmed with fresh-faced, twenty-something Hadley (who has yet to be cast). Evan Rachel Wood at the L.A. premiere for Whatever Works Because True Blood is based only loosely on the Sookie Stackhouse Series, there's no way to tell whether or not Sophie-Anne's story will follow the books. If so, the Vampire Queen will eventually fall for Hadley, but break it off because of a political marriage to the Vampire King of Arkansas. While I'd hate to see Sophie-Anne forced into marrying a man, I do like the idea that she's more than just a lesbian predator. That portrayal is almost as hackneyed as trying to pass off a lesbian character by having her wink at another woman. True Blood's second season premieres this Sunday, June 14th on HBO. Evan Rachel Wood's episodes will air toward the end of the season. We'll keep you updated! |

really??
Wow
This is like, what, the seventeenth lesbian/bi character Evan Rachel Wood has played? There should be a quota for that sort of thing if you're a straight actress. I think she was one of my first celebrity girl crushes during the Once and Again era with Mischa Barton but the whole Marilyn Manson thing scared me a little.
lol i know right she was all
One Word
Amazing.

But you won't even try"

YES!
Half a...Millennium?
Evan Rachel Wood is completely imaginable as a vampire. I'm also glad that she didn't join the cast of Twilight.
Evan Rachel Wood
The look she has in that photo...my goodness. I cannot wait for the new season. This is my favorite new show.

I cant wait!!! How can I watch this without HBO? I have shotime...but not HBO...Sucks to be me...lol

True Blood is one of the
Why not!
I was going to say, the lesbian vampire is such a cheesy fictional stereotype.
But when I found out Evan Rachel Wood was going to play, I immediately thought, "GREAT. I'm going to watch this!"
Sophie-Anne's background story for True Blood sounds hilarious. My girlfriend's from New Orleans, so the whole "Vampire Queen of Louisiana" title is making me burst into laughter. It's true there are plenty of lesbians in Louisiana, and I'm not surprised if they're vampires either. Well the latter may not true, but considering the city's strange history, it could be plausible for her intro as a character into the storyline. I hope they film some sexy lesbian scenes in the French Quarter!!!! ;)
Bite Me!
oooh, a True Blood fan will become more obsessed!
this is getting too good. i already love True Blood without the lesbian storyline and now with this, it's a double whammo!
E.R.W is soooo hot.Funny how she's not gay after playing lesbians one time too many.

anna paquin AND evan rachel wood!
omgoodness i am definitely overexcited about this one...
anna paquin is totally my first actress crush - anyone remember fly away home?? i think i was nine or ten, my parents should have guessed why i was watching such a silly film basically every day LOL
and evan rachel wood? golly golly gosh as my predecessors would say! (yes, i'm english). so the question for me is... will this be airing in the uk? or am i gonna have to wait for crappy internet copies or a superexpensive dvd? you better let me know if it's worth it in the end...
True Blood is definitely one
True Blood is definitely one of my favorite shows, I've been counting down to the premiere this weekend! The addition of a lesbian storyline is even better, but I have to say I like the way the show has been dealing with sex throughout the first season. From watching the series, and knowing out director Alan Ball's auteur style, I think when he makes the vampires pansexual, he means it. It's more male-heavy in making its point in the first season, but sex and blood eventually morph into one in the same for the vampires.
As for Evan Rachel Wood, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but the first season stuck pretty religiously, with a few minor exceptions (to fill in the plot holes left by the books, which are told from Sookie's viewpoint) to the book, so don't be surprised if the political marriage goes through. :(
I hope not though. ERW is probably the sexiest choice for a lesbian vampire (no offense to Alice P's fling! lol)

Love Evan Rachel Wood! I had
400 years old...
Just to point out, if she is 400 years, that's a whole lot more than half a century, that's 8 half centuries. 400 years is nearly half a millenium!
So, after living nearly half a millenium, Sophie-Anne knows what she wants!
Yep.
I logged on to say exactly what you did. I guess there's no need to point it out myself now :0)

Woo Hoo!
Once and Again
Yay!
I'm so happy that I might cry. I love True Blood, I love Evan Rachel Wood... And now she's playing a lesbian vampire on True Blood - happiness!

This show just got better =D
I am obsessed.
True Blood: I Got To Get Caught Up
I hope there will be a mainstream Lesbian charcter on the show; I'm glad that they're introducing the lesbian character Sophie-Anne.
Sidenote: Wow, Anna P is all grown up. She looks amazing.
guiltiest pleasure
ahhh the return of true blood! how did this show manage to be so damn sexy despite the awful fake accents and so many crazy "oh my god did that really just happen" moments (um, like the graveyard sex scene!! in the dirt!!)?? regardless, i cant wait!
truth be told im not a huuuge Evan Rachel Wood fan (yes, she's a great actress and was awesome in Once and Again, but Pretty Persuasion was pretty crazy and dating Marilyn Manson? her whole dita-wannanbe vibe? i dont dig it.), but she is super talented. and very well suited for a role on this show. should be really interesting, and as a lesbian vampire? heck yes.
true blood > twilight. so so much.

I must have missed a scene
More implied than explicit
When Randy and Pam are shopping at the second-hand shop, Randy says that he thinks his daughter is a lesbian, which leads to a cheap joke about whether that fact changes the kind of clothes they should buy. There's also an implication that the woman who answers Stephanie's door twice during the movie is her girlfriend by the way she storms out when Randy visits the second time.
But you didn't miss some kind of "I'm gay" scene or Stephanie kissing any girls.
D'oh!
Now that you mentioned it, I do remember those scenes lol
Thank you for refreshing my memory :)
Im having a true blood orgasm.
I can't wait!!! Finally my life will be worth living again (pathetic yes, I know). I am looking forward to indulging in vampire bill, sookie and everyone else.
HBO: I love you!
I wish I was a vampire.
Brilliant Casting
O.O
I love Evan Rachel Wood!
+ it was created by Alan Ball? O.O
*Buys first season without thinking* woop!
Predatory lesbians.. AGAIN?
OK, so I really love Alan Ball. Six Feet Under is one of my favorite shows of all time, I loved American Beauty, etc. I like True Blood, but honestly, the thought of seeing another predatory lesbian vampire doesn't really excite me.
How many times can I see an innocent girl overtaken by a more experienced lesbian predator? This reminds me of The Killing of Sister George or even better, Coleridge's Christabel. This plotline is as old as the vampires in the show.. come on now!
define innocent
I was just commenting on the
yes!
Exciting!
Vampiric Sexuality
"omnisexual"
Maybe the screenwriters have it right. In my review of Lesbian Vampire Killers: So Bad It's...Ummm...BAD
Read Here:
http://hypervision.blogspot.com/2009/05/lesbian-vampire-killersso-bad-it...
I specifically state that using identifying markers such as sexual orientation is describing Vampires is misleading because in theory Vampires are predators and opportunists. This means they will seduce anyone of any gender or sexual orientation if the end result is gaining blood. See The Hunger and Interview with the Vampire. Granted "Interview" wasn't sexually explicit but the innuendo was there.
This begs the question: Are we so desperate for representation that we glean any sign that can be interpreted as "lesbian" in the media?
In Contrast: Although my site primarily addresses issues intriguing to lesbians it is nonetheless peppered with tidbits of interest to ALL women, even the straight ones. Don't get me wrong as I am no appeaser and am harsh on the GOP, conservatives, right wing nuts and I am PRO Choice.
Sometimes it gets to be lesbian overload, sorry.
Concerning The Wrestler
Concering The Wrestler - It was kind of easy to pick up on Wood's character in The Wrestler possibly being a lesbian. I certainly picked up on it before The Ram tells Tomei. Anyways in the final confrontation between Father and Daughter, the house has several photos of her and her girlfriend in it. At that point it is made clear that The Ram's intuition (and the intuition of many viewers) is confirmed.
As for the stereotype stuff...True Blood is a show chockful of vampires and most of them are good. The bad vampires exist just as bad humans exist as a fraction of the population. What would be questioned after awhile is why there is no lesbian vampire. As far as sexual orientation not being applied, vampires are fictional characters so any author can supply their own viewpoint. Alan Ball's viewpoint is not that vampires are predatory but that they are different (there is a reason the show is seen as a metaphor - and an open one - about the gay rights movement versus intolerance against the LGBT community). It is a show based on books that are a revision of the vampire as the predator and more about how we demonize what we fear.
siiick!
omg, Evan <33 !!!
I love her so much, she's great, I watched most [if not all] of her movies\tv shows.
Once and Again was great.. and Thirteen was even better!
Evan should totally be gay lol
