Showtime Won't Buy "The Farm"Showtime will not be airing The L Word spinoff The Farm, the entertainment industry's leading trade publications are reporting today. "Showtime is zeroing in on new series pickups," Variety reports, and "it's understood that the pay cabler has passed on ... The Farm, an L Word spinoff from producer Ilene Chaiken." According to The Hollywood Reporter, earlier this week "the network informed the producers of two pilots — the L-Word spinoff starring Leisha Hailey and the Matthew Perry/Peter Tolan comedy The End of Steve — that they would not continue." The L Word and The Farm creator Ilene Chaiken The pilot for the women-in-prison drama focused on The L Word's Alice (Leisha Hailey) after she is convicted of killing Jenny (Mia Kirshner), whose death was left unresolved in the series finale of the lesbian drama last month. Although the actresses were unaware of the murder plot during filming, the entire final season of The L Word revolved around "Who Killed Jenny?" Showtime posed this question repeatedly on television and online before and during the eight-episode sixth season, with storylines written to give each of the main characters a motive for the murder. But when the series ended on March 8, the question remained unanswered, primarily because, Chaiken told The L.A. Times in January, "I don't actually feel compelled to answer it." With the announcement of The Farm spinoff in the works, however, it was widely assumed by viewers that Alice would be convicted of the crime, although it is not known whether she actually committed it. Alice (Leisha Hailey) being interrogated in the L Word
finale At the TCA Winter Press Tour in January, Showtime Entertainment President Robin Greenblatt described The Farm as "grittier" than other female prison dramas, with only a few lesbians among the large cast of characters. Famke Janssen, Melissa Leo, and Laurie Metcalfe had guest roles in the pilot, with the possibility of becoming series regulars. Showtime has not yet officially commented on the status of The Farm. Hailey is currently busy promoting her band Uh Huh Her. With The L Word over and The Farm unlikely to air, there are few regular lesbian or bisexual characters slated to appear on primetime cable or premium TV in the near future. There are currently no lesbian characters in regular roles on primetime broadcast TV, and only three regular bisexual characters. |

So sad.
So sad… yes, and for so many reasons
While I will always be grateful to IC for giving us the first lesbian focused series, I always felt the show could have been… should have been, so much better. In the end, I was left feeling that a great opportunity had been squandered. As a person unfamiliar with the process I don’t know whether the blame lie with the writing, directing, editing, pressure from executives or some combination thereof.
It is an even greater pity that we were given such an unsatisfying ending in order to launch a new series that will never be. A part of me can’t help but agree with others who have suggested that it’s a good thing “The Farm” was not picked up… and how sad is that.
I really have to agree with you on this one.
I think the lesbians of the world cut Chaiken and company much slack when it came to the uneven quality of The L Word just because it was the only game going. While I think the actresses gave their all and the show itself attracted some really good talent, it was really kinda squandered. When talking about the show, it made me feel like I was in a bad relationship because when it was good, it was really good but when it was bad, it was awful.
So I'm glad The Farm didn't get picked up. Maybe the best way Chaiken can follow up The L Word is by pooling some of that amazing talent she has access to and produce other people's projects.

trust me it was the writing.
So well said
You state the same sentiment I have, especially the word squandered, and being glad that "The Farm" will not be picked up. It is especially poor form that IC used the whole last season of TLW focused on her new project rather than keeping her focus where it should have been--on the show in her hands!
I really really have to agree with you
Yes I agree so sad...

WTF!!!!!!!!!! I'm Getting Rid
This is why IC should have given the fans a proper ending to the show. Showtime screwwwwwwwwwed IC and the fans with a short season that may have been better if it was longer, and now the spinoff we were waiting for won't happen.
IC should take it to HBO. I'm getting rid of Showtime Package.
No

I totally agree!
Exactly.
Absolutely---
Agree.
(Since when do major cable companies thwart programming they will profit from???)
I AGREEE!!! IC Writing could
YOU HURT ME ILENE CHAIKEN!!!
:(
The writing could have been better in.....
Seasons 4,5 AND 6 however I.C. admitted in an interview with Go magazine that she surfed the internet or had the writers look for fan fiction and derivative works to use. This led to "choppy" and inconsistent stories.
Just goes to show that there are "NO short cuts in life".
I.C. treated what would have been a series that would imortalize her as the creator of the quintessential lesbian serie as a bad term paper. Now she will be remembered as the woman who squandered an opportunity many of us would love. How ungrateful of her.
The title of this article
The title of this article is fantastic, I bow to you Sarah!
It's terrible that there are no lesbian shows now and I definitely would have watched The Farm, but I didn't have high hopes for it either.
You would have watched the Farm despite....
You would have watched the farm despite not having high hopes for it? Why? I am not so desperate to eat sh*t and delude myself into thinking it's steak. I have done that enough with I.C.
In The L Word I.C. portrayed lesbians as: Sexually dysmorphic, alcoholic, pyromaniacal, sexual predators who are outright insane. Yet Chaiken was expecting Showtime to green light a spin-off? What's MORE Umbelievable is that there are actually lesbians who WANTED the character of Alice P. to go to prison!
Considering that inmates don't like "snitches" and taking into account Alice's BIG mouth, well she'd be lucky to survive 2 episodes without being "shanked".
Not at All
Is it bad that I'm not at all disappointed by this news?
Probably so.
I'll take the possibility of an Alan Ball helmed Bad Girls over The Farm any day of the week.

Not the only one
You're not the only one.
I'm not disappointed at all either.
I'll take the possibility of an Alan Ball helmed Bad Girls over
yeah im not shocked
this is the least suprising thing i've heard all week i dont want to see what mama chaiken has to offer maybe when it starts up on the internet someone will buy it
cos that happens so often :(
honestly
the only reason im disappointed is because i wont get to see leisha hailey every week. showtime probably made the right decision,i mean, the farms fanbase wouldve been largely l-word fanbase, and ilene killed most of us off alongside jenny. and unlike schecter, we weren't asking for it
r.i.p. lesbian meaningfulness in television.
i guess ill just google leishas boobs for the next while
Totally agree with you!!!
The only reason I would've watched the hideously titled "The Farm" would've been to see Leisha Hailey too! I think Showtime have done Leisha a big favour as I think this spin-off would've left a blemish on her acting career! She's a fantastic actress and deserves a far better project than this ill conceived concept! What is more, if there is no spin-off then that leaves room for there possibly being an L Word movie! Yay!!!
Love you Leisha but seriously you are better off without this project!!!
i hate to say this but im
i hate to say this but im relieved.
ONLY because Illene is a nut job, and is bound to screw with our heads again. and i really didn't want to deal with that shit. Cuz if it aired, i know for a fact i would have watched it. :/
Im just sad for Leisha Hailey and Famke! :( i love Leisha as Alice!!!!
and damn Famke possibly being gay/bi!!! gaaahhhhhh!!!! :( Famke is so hot! ive always wanted her to play gay. :(
i bet Showtime probably did this because they saw how upset the fans were on how Illene rapped up the L word Finale. I mean the response was SO NEGATIVE. if i was one of the showtime executives, i for a fact, would have listened to the viewers.
Relieved too
I'm kinda relieved too. I didn't like the idea very much.
Would have prefered Alice having a spin-off from New York, doing a TV/talk show. A little bit more comedy. Why does everything have to be a drama?
What about a comedy show staring a lesbian charatcer? I would love that.
No more drama. ;o)
+++libraries gave us power+++
Now there isn't any show for us.
You should be relieved also...
Famke Janssen... doesn't Eulogy counts?
Eulogy Counts!
Famke did play gay
There was a cute little movie that came out a few years ago called "Eulogy" with Zooey Dechanel, Hank Azaria, Ray Romano and Debbie Reynolds where a dysfunctional family gets together for the father's funeral. Famke plays the partner of one of the sisters played by Kelly Preston though the movie has a whole other lesbian plotline too.

No more IC crap?
Exactly my thoughts...
Yeah!
"Smile! It's the second best thing you can do with your lips..."
I'm pretty appauld by how
I'm pretty appauld by how absolutely bitter many of the fans or ex-fans of The L Word are towards Ilene Chaiken. It really is very disappointing by what I have seen fans said....completely shocked. So yea, I suppose the ending of the series might not have been up to par with the rest of the series. Then for people to actually be happy she isn't continueing her work to put some shows out for us?! I don't think she is making these shows to smite us!! I think she has some intention of us enjoying them, don't you think?!? I am actually furious and a lot of the past comments and people have actually said like she should die? It's flat out disgusting. On top of that, Ilene isn't writing the entire show by herself. There is a team of writers with her (of course a lot of based off of what she wants). I wouldn't even say the characters were portrayed as freaks. I thought we had interesting and developed storylines and individuals, that perhaps might have gone a little too far in the last season.
So I will not be joining in on the fun and saying "Good on yah Showtime! Well done!" and thanking Showtime for not picking up the show.
I am appauld too...
by how so many think how this show was brilliant, how IC is brilliant.
I loved 1st season I did, was funny had nice storylines, caracters looked like they are not from some other planet. Then IC got the taste of fame and thought how she can do whatever she wants no matter how she represents LGBT community. So the show went from brilliant to crap in a heart beat cause of her ego. I could go on and on about how bad this show was on so many levels, but I wont.
I get that we want visibility. But do we want it no matter the cost?
I suppose the ending of the series might not have been up to par
You're joking right? Were you watching the same episodes as the rest of us or reliving season 1 over and over again in your head?
The L Word didn't just start going downhill in s 6. No my dear that journey began when season 3 ended.
I think the word you are looking for is "Apalled" not "Apauled".
Ok, first of all, I never
Ok, first of all, I never said the show was brilliant. I can still support a show and still think that it was decent at best.
I wouldn't be too nitpicky about my spelling and correct me with another misspelling since it is actually "appalled". =P Of course I wasn't reliving season 1 over and over again! e.e
There was many things I was not fond of over the course of the entire series, but there is still other aspects I enjoyed. I was just talking about season 6 as being the worst in my opinion and season 5, to me, was the second worst. I never said it started going downhill from season 6 either....
I'm glad.
Seeing Leisha Hailey every week, that could have been a plus. But otherwise, I don't really care.
Can't say I'm surprised...
...or disappointed.
It was a really crap idea.
