Ming-Na to Play a Lesbian on "Stargate Universe"

Ming-NaFollowing on the heels of Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis, the latest Stargate series — Stargate Universe, or SGU — will include the franchise's first lesbian cast member: political attaché Camille Wray, played by veteran Chinese-American actress Ming-Na Wen (pictured, right).

The franchise began with the 1994 feature film Stargate, and has since spawned three live-action series, an animated series (Stargate Infinity), video games (Stargate Worlds), novels, and comics.

The Stargate universe is one in which soldiers and scientists from contemporary Earth interact with alien races possessing far superior technology via a top-secret Stargate (pictured below) that utilizes wormholes to quickly transport people and objects to cosmic locations far away.

Here's the official description of the new series from Sci Fi channel's press release about the series in February:

Edgier and younger in tone, SGU will take the franchise in a dynamic new direction, appealing to longtime Stargate fans and first-time viewers alike.

SGU follows a band of soldiers, scientists and civilians, who must fend for themselves as they are forced through a Stargate when their hidden base comes under attack. The desperate survivors emerge aboard an ancient ship, which is locked on an unknown course and unable to return to Earth.

Faced with meeting the most basic needs of food, water and air, the group must unlock the secrets of the ship's Stargate to survive. The danger, adventure and hope they find on board the Destiny will reveal the heroes and villains among them.

In addition to Ming-Na (who professionally uses only her first name now), the series also stars Lou Diamond Phillips and Robert Carlyle.

Ming-Na got her acting start with a role on As the World Turns, but got her first big break with a critically acclaimed performance in The Joy Luck Club (1993). She went on to star on ER (NBC) from 1995 to 2004 as Dr. Jing-Mei "Deb" Chen, and more recently starred in the short-lived 2006 series Vanished (Fox) with Gale Harold.

She voices Disney's heroine in the Mulan movies, and has done voice-over work for several other movies including Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within.

Stargate's Camille will be the first Asian American lesbian on a primetime broadcast or basic cable show, and one of only a few Asian American lesbian or bisexual characters ever on primetime American TV.

The first Asian American bisexual character was Lindsay Price as quasi-bisexual Jane on the extremely short-lived 2003 American version of the British comedy Coupling (NBC). Biracial actress Michaela Conlin (of Chinese and Irish descent) currently plays a bisexual character on Bones (Fox). Biracial actress Sonja Sohn (of Korean-American and African-American descent) played a lesbian character on The Wire (HBO) for five seasons, from 2002 to 2008.

L to R: Price on Coupling, Sohn on The Wire, and Conlin on Bones

Camille is so far likely to be one of only two lesbian series regulars of any race or ethnicity on American TV next season, since there are currently none on primetime TV right now. (Jessica Capshaw's Dr. Arizona Robbins will be the other one, if she becomes a series regular on Grey's Anatomy next season as rumored).

Producers for Stargate Universe are currently casting for Camille's longtime partner Sharon, who reportedly may become a recurring guest on the series, indicating that we may see the lives of the people the crew left behind, as well as those stranded on the other side of the Stargate.

Fan site Gateworld.com reports that viewers will meet Sharon in the show’s seventh episode, "Life," when Camille uses a long-range communications device to return home to Sharon for a brief respite.

In the casting sides we've seen, the couple is portrayed very naturally and affectionately — talking, making dinner, and sharing a kiss.

Stargate Universe will premiere on the Sci Fi channel in October.

Great news, right?

Just avoid the comments section on Gateworld if you're not up for some very bigotted and small minded posts. The vocal minority, I know.

Woohoo!

Finally a lesbian on Stargate...although there are those of us that lose ourselves in Sam/Janet fanfic of course! Fingers crossed for an honest, stereo-type free portrayal.

Ming-Na is extremely beautiful, I will definitely tune in to support this story line (as well as I can from New Zealand!)

Edited to say I just popped over to Gateworld to read some of the comments and boy, there are some rather narrow-minded views on that site! "We don't hate gays, we just don't want to see them on our TV screens"...yeah, if you don't see it then it doesn't exist. I'm backing the producers of Stargate to stick true to how they feel the characters should be portrayed and not give in to narrow-minded people.

Heh, I wonder how long it will take to screen here? All I know is that I won't be waiting.

Sam and Janet...

...oh, man, those were some good times! :)

I'm a long time sci-fi nut and many have been waiting for a recurring and OUT gay character . What the future holds no queers? HAHAHAHA! Yeah, right!

I loved BattleStar Galactica, hence my username, but Lt. Geida was only revealed to be gay on the cuts you could see online and not in any of the footage shown during the episodes, Cowards, all of them.

The future, like the past, will have homosexuals in every corner of the galaxy, or at least in every corner man goes. Of this, I'm certain. We are part of the human condition and there has never been a time or place without us. I can't wait to see what SGU will bring.

OMG

This is a dream come true! I am a HUGE fan of Stargate SG-1!!!!!! I loved Sam Carter and wished she was a lesbian but now there is one. Hopefully, this lesbian won't be a one time thing. I can't wait for this show, I'm even more anxious to see it!

MING-NA!!!!!!

I have had a crush on her since she was 14, when she was Chun-Li in Street Fighter!  I've never watched Stargate, but I guess I'll start.

Ming-Na

wonderful news:)I never got into SG Atlantis, but SGU and Ming-Na might be just the right excuse to start watching from the first episode on.

There was a time, when sci-fi series where more progressive in their portrayal of lgbt-characters, so hopefully the casting sides weren't just a tease and we will have some wonderful tv-time to look out for in autumn.

finally!

a reason to have hope for what I like to call Stargate: Voyager the 90210 years.

I am a huge fan of the franchise, but based on previous evidence I can't help thinking they'll either kill her off, or use the excuse of seperated partners to not give her much of a life at all.  It's been well documented that the previous writers do not care so much to detail personal lives in the storylines.  Casting sides or no casting sides.  She can be their Tuvok.

but still some hope, maybe I can tune in now and not cringe and feel dirty. lol.

"this is why emotions were bad - they made her think about inappropriate and unsettling things."

Nordie's picture

you mean Sam and Janet weren't officially out?!!

...but...but...but... darn it!

It does sound like a mesh-up with Voyager with a lesbian Tuvok (hm, wasn't that T'Pol already?) - I'm torn whether I should be happy about a lesbian in an apparently stable, normal relationship, or wether I should see it as a ploy to keep any lesbian falling-in-love story and further actions largely off the screen. Hmm.

Still, I think this is a huge step for the SG franchise which in general is very much white-middle class-hetero-male oriented. Which leds to me also being torn on the Asian American lesbian representation. On one side, I applaud the visibility (and more Ming-Na on my TV screen!), on the other, more general political/visible hand, it tastes a little sour to have the only lesbian being portrayed by -speaking from an assumed dominiant white POV, which I find strongly represented on SG (even though there are far worse shows when it comes ot this)- "the other".

It's a bit like Jada Pinkett Smith as a lesbian in the mostly forgettable "The Women" remake - yay for queer colored visibility, but why, in a society where whiteness and heterosexuality are seen as 'the norm' to aspire to, does the 'sexually deviant' end up linked to the 'ethnically differing' while all the white ladies are portrayed as straight?

It would be different if the whole cast of SGU were predominantly Asian American - which it is probably not - and I'll hold out to see whom they'll cast as Sharon, and how that will fit into the mix.

BAS's picture

Is Asian American really the right term on this show?

I haven't watched it, but it seems a little odd to call a character who is living on a starship Asian-American.  Are the people really American at all?

Anyway, just being a brat, clearly she's of Asian descent and that makes her a different race than most people on TV so that's the point.

I think the lesbian-of-color thing is sort of a dammed-if-you-do, dammed-if-you-don't thing.  I've  noticed the same thing, that lesbians, especially on network TV, are getting really non-white.  I think up to a point that's okay and great, but when it gets to the point that the non-white lesbians/bi women are vastly overrepresented compared to the non-white female characters and the lesbian/bi characters as a whole, I think you do start to feel that sense of "oh, she's just the token 'other' character" which I think is not good.

I worry sometimes that this is exasterbated by articles like this one lauding the "first" whatever.  Especially because this one required so many qualifiers.  This still isn't network, so expect a big deal when the first network show has a regular gay Asian-American character.  If you split up bi and gay, network, basic cable, and non-basic cable, plus recurring and regular, that's a whopping TWELVE firsts PER RACE!

But still, I greet the news of any new gay or bi woman on TV with open arms, regardless of their race, because increasing the number of those can only be good.

Wonderful news

I was a huge Stargate fan in the old days. ("Just because my reproductive organs are on the inside...") But for some reason, I lost interest around the time Sam Carter's hair got really long.. ;)
I've never gotten into Atlantis and the concept for Universe seemed doomed from the start ("Stargate: Voyager the 90210 years" @majordoctorsam FTW! :D). But now.. There's a reason to watch. Unbelievable!
I'm a little bit torn on the long-term relationship (not really though) because that might limit fanfic possibilities (not really ;)), but if they do it right.. Established lesbian sci-fi couple, yay!

Now if I have time after work I might go over to Gateworld and squee publibly. Since they already started with the stupid in the comments, a little overexcited fangirling can't hurt.

Yeah

I don't like SG Atlantis but love SG-1. Hopefully this show will be as good, or even better than SG-1. Did you see the original movie of Stargate?

Ming-Na

Fell in love with her in Joy Luck Club.  I know her on sight now.  The woman is smokin hot.  And aside from being hot, she's a damn good actress.

I defintely remember Ming-Na. She's a phenonmenal actress. I loved her in the The Joy Luck Club. I'm fan of Amy Tan's novels. This is great. I haven't seen or heard about what she's up to in a long time. I'm glad she's starring in a sci-fi series and her playing a lesbian character will make it all the better. I'm glad there will be a Stargate series.

Does anybody know if "Stargate Universe" wil post this series on the web like CSI which aira  a current episode and later post it online so fans can  go back and watch or get caught up on a missed episode?

This picture is actress Paula Patton, the R&B/Soul RobinThicke's wife. She played in Deja Vu,Idelwild and Rush Hour 3. So it's not me.

I can't wait for this. I

I can't wait for this. I was/am a HUGE SG1 fan. (I tried to watch atlantis, but after they killed  elizabeth and grew out sam's hair, I lost interest) I was on the fence about watching Universe, but this at least gives me a reason to give it a chance. Though I must say I'm still iffy about the voyager like concept. I'm sure it will be interesting, but lets face it, if they are completely cut off from earth like we are told they will be, there is no way for Amanda Tapping to guest star in an ep. Which is why most of us watched/suffered through season 4 of Atlantis, right? Oh well, at least we have Santuary.

Don't shoot! I'm a friendly! We're all friendly! So lets just be... friendly!-Starbuck (Battlestar Galactica)

My first introduction into

My first introduction into Literature was 'Joy Luck Club' and its still relevant to my everday life. Me and my friends continue to referrence it pretty frequently. I've only watched the movie once but Ming-Na shone for me. I've never known her name, till now.

"veteran"...

....that's an unfortunate label to give someone.

Am I just being pedantic?

LostSoul's picture

Much Better Chance...

Considering that this is a sci-fi show; the character has a much better chance of surviving that any regular drama currently on air.  Sci-Fi can be a lot more "progressive"(such a strange word; but, fairly accurate) when it comes to such storylines than other types of drama...

And, yes, flike...You're being pedantic.  What's wrong with being a considered a "veteran" actress, instead of some newcomer...Looks better for her, career-wise, don'tcha think?

However, I still hold that Amanda Tapping's Col. Carter was seriously sexually ambiguous in the later seasons...JMHO.  But, of course; military:  Don't ask, don't tell; ya know...

And, who says she cannot appear on the new show, trekie?  If you're a fan of SG shows; you know darn well, they're pretty much capable of doing a lot of out-there, stunt storylines.  Wait and watch.  And, I thought Dr. Weir was a replicator now?  They don't die.

Ming-Na! Ming-Na! Ming-Na!

wooohoooooo!

I'm very excited.  Ming-Na is amazing, gorgeous and plays one hell of a ballbuster.  Although, I love the Stargate franchise, I'm wary of them playing to the dragon lady stereotype or the attractive Asian woman magically discovers that she's actually a seventh dan black belt in tae kwon do despite never having taken a single lesson.  ER sort of pushed the boundaries on the "dragon lady" thing, but Ming-Na does it so well that I had to forgive them.

And she's playing a lesbian!  Okay, whoever plays Sharon had better be worth it.  I'm voting for Michelle Krusiec or Lynn Chen.  2 Asian-American lesbians are better than one.  (And yes, it would be Asian-American as Stargate is centered around the American military's adventures through the Stargate.)

Actually...

For the past several seasons...Stargate Command has been very much an international programme; mostly russian and canadian...

Just a little sci-fi geek info for ya there. ;)

I forgot Stargate Command.  The other sci-fi geeks are never going to let me live that down, are they?

Finally

Finally, a lesbian on Stargate!

Too bad younger and edgier usually equals crappier. And that the later seasons of Atlantis were already awful, not to mention almost completely lacking female characters that weren't barefoot and pregnant.

It's kind of funny that the usual Stargate set-up has a bunch of mostly single characters that have seasons of sexual tension with each other without ever doing anything about it. I wonder if this series will deviate from that formula or not. Or if the lesbian will be the only one with a partner that sticks around.

Downy1920's picture

Wait...I'm confused...

I know she's playing a lesbian, but is she a lesbian?

Laugh amongst yourselves. But can someone answer that, please?

Love Ming Na

My only sightings of ER were for Dr. Weaver and Dr. Chen. I thoroughly enjoyed her performance in The Joy Luck Club. She just always has such a nice core presence.

But, Stargate? I know this may seem odd, but I never even heard of that show, but I really dislike fantasy or science fiction so that could be why. If I get that channel though I will give it a try to see Ming Na again, especially playing a lesbian. Terrific.

This article reminds me of the great surprise I had watching Wild Side with Joan Chen and Anne Heche. I don't think I've seen a more wonderfully seductive lesbian relationship on the big screen! There are very difficult elements to the film, but I highly recommend it to see these women. I also love anything Joan Chen does. I believe both of the actors speak English and Mandarin in their roles which is refreshing to hear.

About friggin' time

It's about friggin time the get a regular lesbian character on a sci-fi show! Star Trek failed to do that and I wished and hoped Stargate SG-1 would have made Sam gay, but no. Same with Stargate Atlantis and Eureka ... FINALLY! Let's hope they won't screw it up and make a too big deal about it. I'd like them to treat her sexuality matter of factly.

yay!

Stargate is back! and thats awesome that theres a lesbian on there too :D

I won't pretend that I

I won't pretend that I don't share some of the reservations voiced by other members here, but on the other hand: the gorgeous Ming-Na is playing a lesbian character on a sci-fi show -- hard to see past the glaring positives here :)

I'm quite behind in reading this but...oh well. It does sound kind of like Star Trek Voyager but at least Ming-Na will be playing a lesbian in it. Hopefully they don't downplay that over time.
