Out Lesbian LaKisha Still in the Running on "The Amazing Race"

Openly gay racer LaKisha, left, and her sister/teammate Jennifer

AfterEllen.com recently learned that the 28-year-old contestant LaKisha "Kisha" Hoffman on Season 14 of CBS's The Amazing Race is openly gay.

This information was revealed by Rev. Mel White, an openly gay minister who was racing with his son until he was eliminated last week, in an interview with our brother site AfterElton.com that will be posted there on Friday. Since we don't "out" people, and there have been no public statements from Kisha about her sexuality, we contacted CBS before publishing this story. They confirmed that Kisha is indeed openly gay.

Although there have been close to a dozen gay or bisexual men — three in this season alone (Mel, his son Mike, and Luke) — participating in the popular CBS reality series, there have only been a few openly gay or bisexual women: lesbian ministers Kate and Pat, racing as a couple on Season 12; 27-year-old lesbian Lauren Marcoccio, racing with her father in Season 10; and bisexual contestant Tian Kitchen, racing with her best friend in Season 4.

Kisha is the first openly gay woman of color to race on the series. Her sexuality has not been mentioned on the show or in any Amazing Race press materials.

A youth program coordinator and basketball coach from the Bronx in New York, Kisha is racing with her sister Jennifer, 24, who are referred to on the show as "Kisha & Jen."

Here's the team's official bio on CBS.com:

These two former Division 1 College athletes look forward to becoming the first ever all female Team to win the Race. Besides athleticism, these sisters have little in common.

LaKisha works as a youth program coordinator and basketball coach. She hopes the same strengths that make her a good coach – patience and a strong competitive nature - will ultimately make her the best Racer the game has seen. Meanwhile, she claims her sister is very impatient and blunt when it comes to dealing with others or speaking her mind.

Jennifer works as a marketing assistant and newsletter coordinator for an assisted living company. She claims that she is the creative one while LaKisha is the analytical one…two traits that will undoubtedly be tested on the Race. Jennifer is infectiously energetic and confident, played college volleyball at the University of Louisville. LaKisha played basketball for the same school. Both have a competitive drive and are eager to put it to the test against this season’s crop of Racers.

Neither sister has traveled extensively outside of the states, but they are looking forward to embarking on this journey of a lifetime together in order to change that. They will run the Race with unstoppable speed and numerous arguments along the way.

Although they started the race unimpressively, Kisha and Jen have proved to be a formidable team, coming in third in one leg, and then second in another. The two sisters have worked fairly well together so far (by Amazing Race standards). While both women are fairly low-key racers, Jen's demeanor tends to be more negative, and Kisha's more optimistic (her nickname in her college sorority was "Dr. Giggles").

But in last week's episode, the sisters made a costly mistake when they left their travel documents behind during a task, and were forced to go back and retrieve them before being checked in, which meant they not only gave up their third-place lead, they narrowly avoided elimination.

The season started with 11 teams, which has now been whittled down to 5. Tune in Sunday at 8pm EST/PST on CBS to see how Kisha and Jen fare in the next leg of the race, or catch up on the episodes aired so far online.

The Amazing Race

Cool to know.  I seem to remember something about Mel saying he was gay, but I didn't recall it until now.  I liked that father/son team.  They were fun to watch and had great attitudes.

I like LaKisha and her sister but I am still rooting for Margie and Luke.  Really hoping the redheads go soon.  I'm way over listening to them bitch and complain about other cultures.

Mel White has a rather extraordinary arc in coming out as a gay man. While I would not put him in the same category as a Ted Haggard, for example, he was a (so-called) traditional-family-values evangelical who was vociferously homophobic in the past, and worked HARD and NASTY to defeat gay rights efforts.

(I worked on a Senate campaign in my youth that was pretty much torn asunder by the work of him and his minions.)

And then something happened. I can't recall the details, though he's written a memoir so I'm sure there's a lot of press about it -- but he "saw the light," and came out as a gay man, and has been a very strong and very present advocate ever since.

Thx for the article, Sarah!

I knew it!

I was actually watching the Amazing Race this week and I was totally wondering if Kisha was gay.  I hadn't been watching the entire season so I was wondering if there had been anything said about it earlier.

Mel is gay?  I did not see that.  Is Mike gay too?  If you'd told me one person on that team was gay I'd have picked Mike.

jaydock's picture

Totally called it!

I'm an avid watcher of Amazing Race, and my gaydar went crazy with Kisha, so when I saw this article title, I was like "Duh."

And yeah, Mel is gay, and although Mike's wiki page says he's bisexual, I'd say he's probably gay too. But you know, whatever. I loved those guys, wish they were still on.

2ndlight's picture

i've always thought either

i've always thought either kisha or jen is gay. both mel and mike are gay they mention it during the team intro... ooh...didnt know tian's a bisexual..i love that team..

Vindication

Well, I'm glad that my gaydar is still working--I'd been speculating about Kisha since the beginning of the season. Now if only Victor would come out of the closet, my gaydar could be vindicated fully.

Sexuality solidarity aside, Kisha and Jen are my favorite team still competing in The Amazing Race. I think this is a game that can be played with a lot of integrity and Kisha and Jen are the only two who have done that--nearly every other team has taken the opportunity to sabotage others whenever they can. I hope they continue to do well.

I'm glad that Rev. Mel White made this news public when he did--from the previews, it looks like Jen gets into a confrontation with fellow racer (and out gay man) Luke and the word bitch is thrown around. I'd hate for that to be spun as anything other than what it clearly is: a reaction to events in the game.

BQ's picture

Well that explains it!!

I felt connected to this team somehow and that explains it (even if I didn't realize it!!).  Though I personally prefer Jen myself, both are great.  GO KISHA AND JEN!!

In addition to Mel and Mike, Luke is also openly gay.  An awesomely gay season!

Harpy's picture

Luke

Where did you guys hear that Luke was gay?  I'm not disbelieving you or anything -- I just hadn't heard this before.

From After Elton

I read it on Afterelton, via reality blurred:

CBS announced the cast of The Amazing Race 14 on Monday, but while the network’s press release and web site highlighted some interesting characteristics of its cast, it left out a few fascinating details.

For example, while CBS identified Mel White—a former speechwriter for Billy Graham, Pat Robertson, and Jerry Falwell who later founded Soulforce, a religious gay rights group—as gay, his son’s bio doesn’t mention his sexual orientation. But Mike White, a screenwriter and actor, is bisexual, as he revealed in an interview with The Advocate.

The show’s first-ever deaf contestant, Luke Adams, is also gay, according to his Facebook profile, a fact his bio doesn’t mention. It does, however, note that he’s a super-fan of the show, and is completely deaf (he doesn’t even read lips, so his mom will translate for him).

One of my favorite teams was the sister team from season 2, Mary and Peach. I always wondered if Mary was gay, she was awesome.

Haha, she totally pinged for me as well.  And my lez-dar totally sucks.  Right or wrong, I always assumed she was.

Gays/lesbians on reality TV

Wow, I had no idea Luke was gay. I love Luke and Marge and I hope they do well. I also like Jamie and Cara for shallow reasons (yum). The way Jamie flips out all the time is amusing to me. I know some people hate her. I love her. I also like Victor and Tammy. (I think Victor might be gay, too. But maybe not. Who knows.)

Either way, I think it's interesting that Kisha nor Luke's sexuality has been stated on the show. A few years ago, someone would be cast as the token gay contestant. But more and more we are seeing gay people on reality shows where if their sexuality never comes up, it isn't mentioned. Gay people are being cast for being interesting (or in some shows' cases, for being crazy) and that's great. We're seeing it on The Amazing Race. MTV has cast gay people where it hasn't come up. (Evelyn comes to mind. It was never mentioned her first season. Maybe her second.) American Idol is another one with Adam Lambert. I think this is a good sign.

More visiblity of LGBTQI People of Color in the Media

 www.myspace.com/lunakiss7.com

I'm glad that Amazing Race don't let others influence their decision- making on the selection of contestants for tv ratings.  This is awesome news. The more visibility of LGBTQI people of color , the more accepting it is for people within those communities.  I wish I could watch.

Angie5x5's picture

This does nothing for visibility

Is it really more visibility for LGBTQ people of color if it's never mentioned on the show?  Let's face it, the mainstream fans of the show won't know she's gay unless it's mentioned on the show or in the non-gay media.  It shouldn't matter, but in today's political climate, it does matter.
Melissa Hsu's picture

Agreed.

Agreed.

I actually have a problem with this article stating her sexuality if she has not mentioned it publicly. There could be a reason why she has not said it, who knows.

Sarah Warn's picture

Please re-read the article

I mention at the beginning that CBS confirmed this information. That means we waited to write about Kisha being gay — even though we learned about this days ago — until CBS could verify with her that she is in fact openly gay, and OK with us writing about it.

Lunakiss's picture

So Does This Visibility Mean She Has to Mention She Has A

www.myspace.com/lunakiss7.com

has  a girlfriend or how much she loves womyn?  Or do we continue say hey let's squeeze in a Gay moment...I'm gay. So when is the appropiate time to mention she's a Lesbian. What if she's single? Is it absolutely necessary ...I being rehetorical. I just want to know how visible do you have to be? What kind of visiblity do we have to see on tv?

I'm just thinking here so don't shoot me.

Visibility is the key to acceptance

I see your point, and I don't like her any less for not "announcing" she's gay, but as long as people vote against our rights out of ignorance, I think it's important for gay people to be out as much as possible, in the interest of changing attitudes.

I also wonder if it's never come up in all of the footage they have shot.  I don't think this particular show would intentionally edit it out, but it still seems odd.

Great Point

That is so what I wanted to hear from you. Good point. If anybody read this let us know if she came out on national television. I so don't own a tv and I wouldn't have any idea if she did.

ThanksAngie5x5 for making your point.

Anyone watching tonight?

Im actually really sad that she's gay because she seems to be a really kind of ugly person (ugly on the inside that is).... She really just rubs me the wrong way..

especially with how she's dealing with the deaf guy and his mom...

blah. she sucks.

pecola's picture

To each her own, I guess,

To each her own, I guess, because I didn't see it that way...there seemed to be an even exchange between the two teams. Jen pushed Luke at one clue box and then he pushed her at the next box. Not ideal, but it happens all the time. Marge and Luke's reaction at the pit stop, I think, was ridiculously overblown. No one, even Phil, came to Luke's defense in that situation because: 1. he was wrong and 2. apparently, he was like that (i.e., quick to anger) for the duration of the race.

I appreciate how difficult it must be for Luke to run the race with his disability, but, at the end of the day, he's a competitor and should be treated such by the other racers. They keep trying to paint him as a sympathetic character but he's been the most ruthless competitor all season--Mike's description of him as the sinister deaf kid seems particularly apt.

i'm with you. she's not

i'm with you. she's not that cute, her sister is WAY HOTTER (did you see Jen running in her underwear? )

but i digress, Kisha hasn't grown on me, she rubs me the wrong way. I can't tell why.

She would have to be really closetted internally, or not so much about her sexuality if she's out. The show doesn't tend to cut out material that is identifying. What I mean is: everyone's true colours always shine on this show. There's so many circumstances that bring out the diferent sides of people, not just what they want highlighted of themselves.

It's always interesting to see siblings on the show. Siblings bring out the adult and the kid in you. I think that's why I can't get excited about Kisha, I don't like how she treats her sister.

now that i think of it, there was no mention of this when they did the Karaokee vans with the Japanese trans folks....

I LOVE the Amazing Race, I've watched just about every season. It has been a great show in terms of visibility. Queer folks, ppl of colour, there's always someone you can connect with and root for. And I like how sometimes ppl self-identify by the labels most folks would call them, but not to their face.

pecola's picture

Not True

staka wrote:

That's not true, actually.

One of the things that I dislike about The Amazing Race is that they sometimes resort to characterizing the teams and they limit the view of that team to reinforce that characterization. In fact, here's how Mel White explained the response from the producers when Luke told him that he wanted to be identified as gay on the show (via Afterelton):

AE: Was Luke Adams out to the other players?

MW: Yeah, pretty much. Once he found out that Mike and I were being billed as gay, he wanted to be billed as gay, too, and I called the producer and they said, “No, we’re establishing you as what we want you to be established. He’s established as deaf. You’re established as gay, so don’t be interrupting what we’re trying to do here.” So they were very clear about not wanting to muddy the waters by bringing in another issue.

So it's not the players who avoid identifying themselves, it seems to be a production decision. Despite not outing themselves in any tangible way on the show, clearly, Luke and Kisha were comfortable enough with their own sexuality to be out to their fellow contestants.  It's sort of insulting to the audience, I think--as if we couldn't handle the duality of Luke being deaf and gay or Kisha being black and lesbian.

I don't think

that she is ugly at all. she was not mean to him. okay, I watch that ep and he struck first. when they were going for the box he got there first and his reflecks, hit her sister. The same thing happen at the other box. so i think that they were even.

Now, what I don't like or I think was necessary was for his mom to say " you people" like black people are so different from everyone else, i was very offended by that. and I don't think that she was being mean to " the deaf guy" it was an arguement and they were BOTH yelling at each other( oviously he can't yell but he was angry and pushing his hand up in the air)

If he is going to get in an arguement with someone then he should not Play the " deaf" card just like if african american gets in an arguement then they should not pull the " black" card. so I think that it was fair and no one was out to get the " deaf guy" as you can see they did some pretty shaded thing in previous episode too.
Now because he is deaf do we look pass it, No.

I personally think she is great and hot.

GO LEKISHA, kick his ASS!!!
