"The L Word" Will Continue Online and in a Possible Spin-off

"Ilene and I have always tried to find a way to bring me back into the fold," said Manheim, "and if she can figure it out in the spin-off, I'd do it in a heartbeat. I love Vancouver. I bought an apartment there when I was doing The L Word, and I'm looking for a reason to spend some time there, so I'd love to [go back]."

In terms of the final season's "mystery element," Greenblatt would not elaborate other than to confirm that "there's a mystery."

He explained: "I don't mean to be keeping coy, but we're trying to keep it very close to the vest. And you know, unfortunately everybody tries to get these scripts and they go online, and all the surprises are blown to the viewers. So we're just being very tight-lipped about it. In fact, there's things we're not even telling the actors."

When asked how she feels about The L Word ending, Manheim said: "I don't know what all the reasons are for. I thought it was a really important show on so many levels. I'm so grateful that it existed and was there for people to see themselves on television. It's always important to have role models on TV … because then you feel like you're living in the real world. So it was a really incredibly important show. I'm glad to hear there's going to be a spin-off."

keep Manheim away.

I found it painful to watch Manheim. Is there a need to have her character back? Who we really need is Ton-Ton. I know, no one loved Tonya and Dana together, but I thought she was so hilarious.

I totally agree Manheim's role sucked and why they aren't having Anne Archer back is beyond me she was fabulous. She should return and talk some sense into her daughter and Shane too. I also agree with whoever said let the LWord end it's story and let another story begin. --- what if you had the keys to the world, you held them all in your hand...

I think I'm the only one in

I think I'm the only one in this world that think like this. I think th L Word should end after season 6. Give each character a FINAL ending and get the whole story and drama done with. What HBO can do is start a new lesbian drama. I'm a fan of the first two seasons of the L Word. When you stretch a drama too long, it begins to drag on and on and on. You can't keep on milking the cow forever. I request a new lesbian storyline.

HBO, it's on Showtime.

can you read?!

no one said it was on HBO, just that HBO should start a lesbian show. not reading things properly is what gets people in trouble (and i so hope i read it all right, too, lol!)

fact of the day - anne archer and camryn manheim are both in ghost whisperer...

the spin off so has to be Alice. who else could it be? Kit? lmao!! girl, girl, girrrrrrl

what could they do with a Shane spin off? reflect on all the girls she's slept with, and have her sleep with a new girl every episode? i think not. that would be boring as hell.

bette and tina live happily ever after, so there's no way to progress their story, unless they cheat, break up, have a baby, make up, cheat, break up, have a baby... you get the drift...

they seemed to have written helena out in season 5, so not much of a spin off there, although with her money, maybe she can go around splashing it on various things, good and bad, etc. again, boring.

jenny's lost all her marbles, maybe the spin off could be her finding them all one by one.

max spin off chronicles his/her journey to becoming a man, or going back to being a woman.

therefore Alice, she has so much more to offer, the chart, the tv chat show, the up and down love life, the possibility of Tasha as a guest star...

lesbians in heaven! starring dana "soup chef" fairbanks. alice will need to die in the l word series finale, of course, so she can be reunited with dana. someone make this happen. also, in heaven, please have lara's dead twin sister date alice and/or dana.

I'm glad to hear of the possibility that the L Word existing online... but spin-offs aren't often successful unless done right (often in favor of what the fans want). With Mama Chaiken at the helm, I hope this venture will not negatively affect how fans see the L Word as a separate entity but rather enhance it. But to be honest, I'm glad that the show will still be around, period!

I love Sharmen!!!

They said there will be a mystery element in the 6th season...I got it!!! So the mystery element is Carmen's return...and the spin-off will be called "Sharmen"...sorry daydreaming again... :)
Skadi22's picture

Carmen sucks. Frankly Sarah

Carmen sucks. Frankly Sarah Shahi's  character  was very superficial and too weird. I would prefer Shane with Cherie or maybe Molly. There is no chemical  between Shane and Carmen.

I bet that Kate Moennig would prefer her's character with Cherie.

Tina's picture

Sharmen

I'm assuming by "chemical" you mean chemistry... I think out of every girl Shane has been with, she had the best chemistry with Carmen. I don't think Carmen was superficial at all. And Shane with Cherie? Come on.
Gobias Somecoffee's picture

Sharmen

I definately thought Shane and Carmen had more chemistry.  Lap dance, anyone?!
PastLife's picture

Sharmen

Carmen and shane did have the best chemistry. (reminded of lap dance and wiping a bit of drooloff my chin) I wish that Sarah Shahi returns for season 6 if only to bring closure to the storyline, But I love her on her new show LIFE. I'm hoping that show gets a long run. Even if her character on Life is straight, I can have my fantasies.

Cherie was a great character, I loved that TLW has such sexy and wild mature woman. Usually women over 35 or 40 get stuck in sexless mom type roles, but the Cherie/Shane storyline has pretty much run it's course .

Molly and Shane together were sweet, But I can't see them together long term. Even if shane grew-up enough to have a real relationship she and Molly wouldn't have enough in commen

A spin-off with Shane is possible. She's now getting into photography. I can imagine a really interesting "Lesbian Entourage" type show built around that character.

Skadi22's picture

Yeah chemistry...Sorry for

Yeah chemistry...Sorry for bad english. Carmen was a superficial character with many cliches, she never convinced me as lesbian or  bisexual. By the way, Cherie was a interesting character, a middle age woman that discover casual sex can be anything but casual.

However, if you don't like Cherie. Molly would be a good option for Shane than Carmen. Molly was not superficial, she was a worthier conquest for Shane, who had to modulate her expectations and her seduction strategies to Molly’s slower pace. And, Molly convinced me as a "bisexual" and a confused young woman about her sexuality.

Chrysalis_93's picture

casual sex

Casual sex in my opinion is something that two SINGLE consenting adults choose to do amongst themselves. Cherie was married with a child and also NOT GAY. Shane was simply a young plaything that Cherie could toss around like a cat with a yarn ball until she got bored. I think that Carmen was a very convincing lesbian and the issues she had with her family I can relate to. As a feminine lesbian myself, much of my family does not understand my views nor my relationships with women.

Chrysalis_93's picture

NO CHEMISTRY???

You have got to be kidding me right? Sexual chemistry was in the bag and even if that had been touch and go (which it so wasn't) Carmen was the only woman who Shane ever truly loved. Cherie Jaffey was only an enfatuation an obsession with something she could never truly have. I cried the day that Carmen left.

However, if Shane and Carmen were to not work out, my second vote would be a Shane and Molly reunion.. so cute!

P.S. Cherie Jaffey is a manipulating user she takes what she can get for as long as she can get it until it's not convenient for her anymore and then she drops it like a bad habit.

A open ending? That Sucks!

Natazzz's picture

I'm torn

On the one hand, I like the idea the L word is not going to go away completely, and both a spin-off and an online continuation of the show could be interesting.

On the other hand, I agree with GreyDay that open endings suck, and maybe 6 years of L word drama is more than enough. They should just end it once and for all...like they once suggested on WGN, final ep: Everybody dies...

I could not care less

The L-Word is yesterday's news. And Mama C is just going to destroy any goodwill that's left by dragging it out like this. (No surprises there...) Hey, here's an idea. Why not kill off all the popular characters with a different disease of the week, one per episode, until we're just saturated with Ilene's PSA's...

If you're looking for the next big thing, how about Girl Trash? When's that coming back? Now that's fashion-forward, as Nina Garcia would say.

Something New

I'm glad the L Word existed although I didn't personally like it. It would be better to just do something new altogether. There's lesbians in the world who'd like to see lesbian characters in something else...a different genre or show format. Don't get too comfortable doing things one way because it worked...or at least was a fairly successful "lesbian" show.

I want to see something more like Girltrash...or actually Girltrash. They could put money into continuing that instead of the L Word continuing online.

Chrysalis_93's picture

I agree... somewhat

I love the L word, but I agree I would like to see a lesbian show of a somewhat different format. A sitcom, a comedy, something that can be relatable to the every woman and not just excentric, power hungry, cheating, crazy artistic types out there. Not everything has to be an extreme. Don't get me wrong I understand that the L word is intended to come across that way because it is in fact a drama, and there were some very relatable qualities to the show but not really something you can build a lasting foundation on. The only scenerio that really held water was the Bette and Tina dynamic as far as being an all american family that just happened to consist of two lesbians. I would like to see something like Yes dear or king of queens set in a lesbian format so that we can show the world that we are not all blood thirsty adulterous drama queens that we too lead normal lives. Granted we have our problems but being gay doesn't change that, that's just life. Period.

A Mystery?

The open ending and web series doesn't bother me that much.  I think it would be better to have some sort of resolution, but whatever.  What I'm worried about is that there's going to be a mystery.  That has the potential of making the whole season suck.  hopefully it won't, but I'm not holding my breath.

WHY a Web Series?

I don't get it, TLW has every oppurtunity NOW more than it did 4 years ago.. So why turn into something small when T.V is the better way and let's face it more accesible.

I was happy to hear about a spin off, given that most spin offs don't do well, I'm still rooting for this one because a show like TLW was something that would be unheard of 10 years ago. So I'm all for the spin off, but completely against it being online.

Just one request for Chaiken would be to get Sarah Shahi for at least one scene in the final episode.

faith_in_buffy's picture

I'd like a L word/Buffy spin off

It would be like Alice or Shane or someone finds out she's a slayer since Willow did that spell in season 7. This would also be an easy way to bring Dana back. Then Jenny would prolly become a vengence demon. Obviously Faith would get together with one of the L word girls.

It would be the perfect show. Lesbians kicking arse.

i hope to god its NOT

i hope to god its NOT Jenny. its gonna suck if it is.  And i hope its not Dawn Denbo.

if its a character let it be Alice. Please God let it be Alice!! She's so freaking awesome to watch, and halarious, and real. jenny and dawnd are just ANNOYING.

i mean, i love the L word, but all good things must come to an end. I really wish they would just make another NEW lesbian show. Why does it have to be a character from the L word? are people getting that un-imaginative?  Plus these last seasons of the L word sucked.

The only really good seasons of the L word were season 1 and 2. And if Illene C. is part of this project(which i think she is) its not gonna be as fun as anyone would hope. Man, if Angela R. was writer/ director in charge it would be AWESOME!!!

oh well. :( im not too thrilled. I really wish they would just create a new show/new characters!! And give real lesbians/gay actors a chance! i would put Jill and Bridget on my new show!

Please end the torture...

L word needs to end already!! Ilene definitely pioneered a movement and showed the networks the need for this material but she needs to sit down now and let others take over. For those of you who want Girl Trash-Angela Robinson writes it and she also writes for L word so I vote for someone else. The storylines have gotten pathetic and I don't want 6 more years of the same thing...NEXT

my 2 cents

i don't think the spinoff will be with one of the main characters that has been on the show for every season. i have a feeling its going to be Adele .. not sure how i feel about that

wouldn't be upset having any of the characters for the spinoff except max or tina .. ugf

[& i agree that carmen should come back at some point in the final season :) yum]

I'll give the spin-off a chance. If it's good, there's no harm done. If it's bad, atleast it won't ruin the memory of the original series. I can see worse fates -- like IC dragging TLW to infinitum nauseum.

I think

that this series has brought in a crapload of money for the Showtime network. So is this spin-off Ilene Chaikens' idea or Showtime CEO Bob Greenblatts'? They all know The L Word has to end, However, the Showtime network is trying to milk the storyline for what it's worth. I just think that we NEED and WANT more shows based on Gay life, relationships etc. And Kudos to Ilene for starting it all. Oh and BTW, I think the new spin-off series is going to circle around Shane.
Nothing's picture

If it continues as a web series

they'll have to clean it up too much.  Frankly, the only reason to watch is because of the sex.  Not to be crass, but the storylines are really bad and tend to be dropped just as you're expecting something good to happen.  I hate many of the main characters, like Jenny, and there are far too many characters in any given season.  Instead of developing the main characters they toss in a bunch of characters who play actors who play the main characters and expect us to keep up with who everyone is or is supposed to be.  I'm not sure it would be enjoyable in a web series especially if they use a poor quality video player like they use when they preview the L word on OurChart.

However, it could be possible that IC has decided she's screwed up the L word too much to continue it and is looking for a chance to do something better.  Better writing and directing and fewer poor judgment calls - like killing one of the most popular characters, would be prudent.

It's comming

My God, I still can't believe L word will finish. It's just something that my head DON'T accept. It changed my life forever.

Anyway, I'm glad that it had and have so much sucess!!!! We deserve all the seasons!!!! we needed it! Was the biggest step EVER! L word changed the way that TV show's deal with homossexuals.

So give us, a brilliant season 6.

Good and Sad..L Word

It is amazing to know that L Word is filming the next season and will possibly continue on the web but, I will miss the L Word on tv come on.... it was an amazing series and so funny yet one can identify with... and yeah... why bring Keener?... her character was obnoxious...
Kriskokid's picture

Pull the plug!!!

The L Word is a terrible show.  It would never have survived if it wasn't for folks like us hungry for lesbian content—ANY lesbian content—because it is really shite.  The L Word is ending, good riddance.  There are such talented people involved with it...Beals, Rollins, that Murmurs girl...there is just no way that they should have to put up with the godawful dialogue and complete lack of consistency from episode to episode.

Watching the L Word just makes me angry...I have straight friends who ask me about it when I admit to watching it (oh, I'm hungry too!) and I have to tell them "pleeeeease don't.  it's really, really bad."  It's so embarassing to have that show represent queer culture to many who would be otherwise unfamiliar with it.

I hope the webisodes wither and die.  Somebody needs to take that pony out back and shoot it now for god's sake.

BESIDES, SHANE IS A HAIRDRESSER AND WE HAVE NEVER SEEN HER CUT AN INCH OF HAIR.  wtf.  SUCH a steaming pile...peace out chaiken.

jerseygyrl1983's picture

sigh

I have to agree.  The first season was good, then something vile happened with the writing: characters became pathetic victims, sociopaths, unbearable narcissists, etc., with insufficient explanation as to why all of that was happening.  Not that it even needed to.  They dug a big hole for themselves when they got rid of one of the most likable and realistic characters -- Dana -- and introduced silly caricatures like "Papi."

And that theme song is one of the most embarrassing and uninspiring tunes I have ever heard.

I wish Tina Fey would write a show for lesbian / bi women.  One can only dream...

demoiselle cyan's picture

L word characters no no's

OMG It's trueeeeeeee.....yuck I HATED Sarah Shahi's character....I mean...Carmen had NO CHEMISTRY with Shane...and she was like super weird and superficial whatever I did not like her. Shane should end up with Molly or Cherie....yeah Roxanna Arquette should make a comeback.... but please Carmen stay away. And Jenny's crazy assistant who took over...get outta the way... I think Jenny already learned her lesson and got her feet back to Earth... cuz she needed to snap out of it. Should Marina make her comeback with her trillion languages... it was "très très chaud" very hot. Bette and Tina are just meant to be... although Tina was looking kind of aprehensive towards Bette.. they are just meant to be together and have more babies. And Alice... well.... hum.. end it with Tasha... they don't make a hot couple anymore and they're at different places right now... so they need to get Alice a new love. And where's Papi?
