Shonda Rhimes Confirms Lesbian Relationship on "Grey's Anatomy"

Rhimes is also interested in exploring the nauances of coming out later in life. "I think it's very different to go from being 19 and declare this," she said, "and to be a grown woman and declare this when your family's already thought something else."

When asked whether Callie is on a journey to "figure out whether she's actually gay," Rhimes responded, "They are definitely on a journey, and it's going to be a really interesting one. It's funny, the writers are really excited about it. I mean, we spent a lot of hours talking about how we're going to do it and what we're going to do, what might the problems be and the emotional aspects of it and the fun that we can have with it. So we're excited about it."

The writers did not originally plan for this story line, according to Rhimes. It developed organically from the other story lines on the show as well as the relationship between actors Sara Ramirez and Brooke Smith.

"Sara is just a fabulously comedic actress and has so much to give, and post-George I felt like she was searching for something," Rhimes explained.

"She and Erica together — Callie and Erica together — seemed to have a lot of interesting chemistry and dynamic. And we really did start them out as being friends, and it felt like there was something more there — the same kind of chemistry that I saw between, say, Christina and Burke, before Christina and Burke got together, [so] that I wanted to play it and see what happened with it."

Both actors, Rhimes noted, were fully supportive and "really, really embraced the story line." In an interview with AfterEllen.com at the press tour, Brooke Smith said that upon learning of this new twist in her story line, "I was psyched. I thought it was a great idea."

When AfterEllen.com's managing editor Malinda Lo had the opportunity to ask Rhimes some questions, she quickly zeroed in on two important ones: Are Callie and Erica lesbian or bisexual, and will either one immediately become pregnant upon coming out?

Here's a transcript of that Q&A:

Malinda Lo: Can you tell me about how you came up with the Callie/Erica story line?
Shonda Rhimes: It felt natural to us, it felt interesting and it felt like something we hadn't done before, but it also felt like something that was true to the characters. So we really wanted to portray that in a way that felt honest and real.

ML: And how is it going to develop in the next season?
SR: If I could tell you how it was going to develop in the next season, you wouldn't have to watch next season; you gotta see that.

ML: Well, I have one question then. I'm not sure if you're aware of this, but a lot of lesbians, once they come out on prime time, tend to get pregnant really fast. It sounds weird, but can you tell me
SR: No, they're not going to get pregnant really fast. That's not — I can tell you that specifically, that is not going to happen.

ML: Are they going to come out as bisexual or as lesbian?
SR: You should watch the show. I feel like we worked really hard to create a world that felt real and true to the characters and true to women who decide late in life that they're lesbians. And so I feel like the way that we do it is very — for us, feels very fresh and interesting and new, and I feel like you're going to have to watch.

The fifth season of Grey's Anatomy debuts on ABC this fall. Read our Quickie With Brooke Smith for her take on her character's story line.

I'm excited!!!!!

So yes, shonda confirmed it! There's going to be a romantic relationship between erica and callie!!!!! I'm super excited to see how the relationship between these two will develop! And if their journey to discover wether they are lesbian or bi.
monica_ca's picture

This makes me happy

It sounds like the storyline is going to actually be good with these two, and not your typically "gay couple" on TV.
Janay's picture

Yay! But It has to be BI right?

It's alot of questioning if the women are going to be lesbian or bi-sexual...that's confuses me:

Callie has dated men her whole life, correct?

and remember when Erica finally told Mark why she couldn't date him, "You wanna know the truth? Your pretty, too pretty. So pretty that if we didn't work together yeah we probably would...(suggestive face)...but we do work together".

So I'm SUPER excited for next season but I just think that both characters are- or unless further explanation is made- can only be bi....not that it matters cause it will still be a lesbian storyline:-)

P.S. When forced to use labels I do not identify as Bi, I'm Gay...so if I just don't understand what it means to be bi, correct me on all this

Awesome!!

I'm so freakin' excited about the new season and this storyline!!!  Aside from the fact that Sara Ramirez is HOTTER than HOT, I am just glad they are willing to develop this story and went about it in a very intentional and conscientious way.

Woo!

Ooopsy!

I just have to say thank you

I just have to say thank you for not throwing us another pregnant lesbian...ahem, cashmere mafia...and then just ditching the whole thing altogether.

Loving the anticipation...

thanks for the great news, I can't wait to see season 5!! so all the good things we were hoping for are going to be dealt with - including another appearance by callie's dad!! I'm sooo happy that shonda takes this seriously and wants to do something great with this, because honestly, I think we all need some GOOD lesbian entertainment on tv!! I can't wait!!

WOooHOoo...

So Shonda's finally confirmed that there will indeed be a romantic relationship between Dr Torres and Dr Hahn ^^ YAY!! i'm really looking forward to seeing what they come up with for Erica and Callie's coming out. i hope they'll deal with it in a light hearted and humorous way rather than the usual angsty and depressing way >< but from reading what Shonda's had to say so far... i have a good feeling about this ^^ now all we have to do is sit and wait for the new season to begin...

Hot Damn!

I've always enjoyed Grey's but something was off for a little while.  I'm not saying that the Callie and Erica storyline saved the show for me, but it certainly brought new life to it.  I have a surge of excitement to watch the show and am highly anticipating the next season.  Callie and Addison have long been my favorite characters on the show, even though Addison is gone now.  They both brought life and energy to otherwise pretty self centered characters- which I do adore don't get me wrong.  But once I saw Sara as Callie in the second season, I was hooked and I remember telling my wife "I'm gonna like her".  To add to her awesome personality, she is drop dead sexy.

I am greatful for Shanda and the writers for taking it seriously but still have the ability to have fun with Callie and Erica.  They were well prepared and actually took the time to contact GLAAD and ask for guidance on the storyline.  I can bet my crappy salary not all shows that introduce a gay/lesbian/bisexual storyline do that.  I'm also happy ot hear that they will continue their relationship and explore Erica's feelings/side of their relationship.

Damn, thanks again AE for keeping us up to date.  Sounds corny but coverage like you all provide does help a bit I think.  Hopefully we'll see more well rounded series and storylines like we're seeing with Callie and Erica.

Sorry

Did you like the old one better?  Same artist though :)  Should I change it back?

I wish I watched this show.

I wish I watched this show. Sounds like it will be "interesting." (Sorry, I couldn't resist, since "interesting" is like every other word in the interview, but seriously, it looks like it will be good, and I wish I was up to date on the show.)

It's not too late

I didn't start watching until the big super bowl episode in the middle of season 2.  This isn't Battlestar Galactica.  Like all great soap operas, you can pretty much jump in at anytime.

Besides, you have a few months to catch up with old DVDs or YouTube, if you're afraid of being totally lost.

Oh Yoshimi, they don't believe me...

monica_ca's picture

I just started

I just started watching it this spring...like, I probably only saw the last three or four episodes...you can really jump right in.
Leenaomi's picture

Nice!

Can't wait for next season.
Brittany's picture

I guess I'll be giving Grey's a second chance!!

Christina's sarcasm and Dr. Bailey's always real attituce were no longer enough to keep me watching. I jumped off the Grey's bandwagon when Izzy and George got together and Meredith and Mcdreamy just became nausiating. I loved Sara Ramirez's character on Grey's and I always wanted her to be gay. Can't wait to see how it develops!!!

I'm very excited

Very excited to see how their relationship develops!

Sara vs. SAH-Dah

Does it piss anyone else off that people call Sara Ramirez "Sara" instead of SAH-dah... the way her name is SUPPOSED to be pronounced??
monica_ca's picture

Doesn't bother me

...but that's probably b/c my Spanish stops at "hola" so I had no clue they were mispronouncing it.  Do you know if she's ever corrected anyone in an interview?  If not...well, the perhaps that's not how SHE (and her family) pronounce it...maybe she's grown up being called "Sara."  Or maybe she's just gotten so used to ppl mispronouncing it, that she just doesn't care anymore.
AMN's picture

Sounds promising

I've enjoyed watching what Shonda has created.  Reading this article actually gave me reason to hope that there will be a positive bi/lesbian storyline on prime time tv.  I was pondering giving up on Grey's after all the whining from Meredith and Katherine crap, now I have something to look forward to.

New super couple on the block.  Send McDreamy and Meredith to the corner and let the girls have the spotlight.

Any road is a good road when you don't know where you're going.

Awesome

I heart this show and almost all of the characters, so for me this storyline is a nice icing on the cake.

Very relieved to hear there won't be any pregnancies just yet.

Heeeee....

i'm so goddamn excited!! And.

I'm SO glad that they said 'no immediate pregnancies' FOR SURE, cuz I was SO SCARED that after Sloane was all "I'd make a terrible dad' and then he and Torres started gettin it that she'd return next season all knocked up and shit. Ugh I'd be really disappointed. (Not saying they couldn't stil carry out a lesbian storyline, but. Still.) So yeah I'm all excited, and i'm also excited to see Hahn's POV since she's so guarded.

TIME TO SPECULATE!! (somehow I feel i'm way more crunk about this than everyone else... yeah i said 'crunk'.)

I think Hahn's always been gay, because of a look she did in a scene that I won't go on about for fear of being called a geek, and Callie is about to learn all about the fluidity of sexuality. Delicious.

I got a dick like a mule...with a big dick.

callica!!!!

I only started watching Grey's because you folks here gave me a heads-up that sara ramirez would be playing gay! She's the best and Rhimes is right about sara's comedic skills-- but it's always so natural! Like this is how she really is in real-life. Anyway, I love that they paired the two most unlikely characters and that it actually worked. It's such an exciting storyline all the more because Sara Ramirez is intelligent and latina and hot!

addict

I was a total greys addict from the start, this has just made it even better! I hope they keep it up, by the ways things are going im sure they will quite successfully.

oH mY gOsH! oH mY gOsH! oH mY gOsH! , SWEEEET!

Reading this article was the highlight of my day today. I had to read it a few times. I am so excited. I can not wait for season 5 to start. I just started watching this show towards the end of season 4. I am a big Callica fan. Knowing that this couple will get the same chance as all the other ones on the show really makes me happy.

P.S. I luv Shonda Rhimes. She is now my new favorite person.

Z Egloff's picture

Fingers crossed

Dude.  Here's hoping that by "fresh" and "interesting," they don't actually mean "weird" or "lame."  Don't get me wrong, I'm excited as the next person about this - I don't have cable and I never watched Gray's before and I've already watched it a bizzilion times on You Tube.  Perhaps I'm bitter from previous disappointments (Kerry Weaver on ER, Cashmere Mafia, etc), but I really really really hope that they do justice to the storyline.  From the sounds of Shonda's comments, it sounds like we have a decent change of a seriously decent storyline.  Fingers.  Crossed.

Como Se Dice "Sara" ?

Sara isn't neccessarily a Spanish/Latina name per se like "Carmen" for instance. So as a full blooded latina myself, I pronounce it the Anglo way. But If you do pronounce it in Spanish it's "Sa- rra" with a slight rolling r sound. In fact in a PSA I've heard Sara herself pronounce it that way. I'm guessing that's  the way she heard it said by family members as she was growing up. And probably does so in an effort to emphasize the respect she has for her culture.

American born and raised latinas will almost always pronounce their names the Anglo way. I don't know too many Marias or  Annas that say their names the traditional way unless they are in a spanish speaking environment. If your last name is Rodriguez, you will more than likely say "ROD" riguez rather than 'RRRod riguez.  Or RA mirez instead of RRRa mirez. At least that's my experience here in the Northeast.

My name isn't particularly spanish...in fact it's origins are French. When I'm asked my name in a professional capacity, I give it the anglo treatment. But if I'm at the local laundromat I'll say it the Spanish way.

It's about time

It's about time. Spain has the soap "Hospital Central" with main characters who are lesbian. OK, so they had kids, but that didn't deter from the fact that these women were openly gay. I'll never understand why it takes the good old U.S. of A. (us) so long to grab a concept and run with it. I'm so looking forward to seeing where they'll take this relationship. Please don't scerw it up.
belenen's picture

Shonda, if you call them lesbians, that kinda gives it away.

"women who decide late in life that they're lesbians"

Well that pretty much kills my hope that they might let Callie actually be bi.  Heaven forbid a woman be with a woman without invalidating all previous relationships with men.  UGH.

habla espanol

her name is sara, pronounced sara.  where did you get the idea that r's are pronounced like d's?  i have spoken bilingually for years, both spanish/english and the only d sound is the letter d itself.  there is r which is said r and rr that you need to trill, but it's still r.

when someone who speaks spanish tries to pronounce words in english the letter sounds are a bit different, which is why you may have thought it was a d sound.  it's an r.

ps:  brooke smith is smoking hot.

Heard audio spoiler on late night radio....

...and since I'm not a regular watcher, I don't know each character. But, what I did hear was a scene between the two women in which one woman states that she had always been with men, and that it seemed good and fine, but now has a totally different perspective.

She recalls being told she needed glasses as a child, thinking she could see perfectly fine, and upon getting those glasses, had a whole new world opened up to her.

I won't try to get the dialogue verbatim, but you will enjoy the emotion with which it is delivered.

And the fine line widens.....
