"Bones" Digs Up Angela's Ex-Girlfriend for the Fourth Season

On a Bones panel at the 2008 International Comic-Con in San Diego last weekend, actor Michaela Conlin indicated there may be a lesbian romance on the horizon for her character next season, which kicks off with a special two-hour episode in early September.

"Angela may have a relationship this season [with] someone by the name of Roxy," Conlin volunteered to the enthusiastic crowd.

The popular Fox crime drama — created by Hart Hanson and starring Emily Deschanel and David Boreanaz as a forensic anthropologist and FBI agent, respectively, who work together to solve crimes — averages 8 to 9 million viewers per episode, and is one of network television's most-watched series.

Angela Montenegro, an artist specializing in forensic facial reconstruction, is engaged to entomologist Dr. Jack Hodgins (T.J. Thyne) and serves as Temperance "Bones" Brennan's (Deschanel) confidante and best friend.

Angela was revealed to be bisexual last season, when a private investigator mentioned she had received information about Angela from "a girl named Roxy, whose heart you broke in second-year art school."

But Angela's bisexuality was hinted at as early as the first season, when she teased Bones in "The Man in the Fallout Shelter" that she might kiss her under the mistletoe at the Christmas party "in a festive, non-lesbian manner." Later that season, in "The Man in the Bear," a FedEx messenger whom Hodgins and Zach were trying to impress made it clear she was more interested in Angela than them, to which Angela responded with a laugh, "That is very sweet. Thank you."

During the second season, the writers carefully and slowly developed a romance between Angela and Hodgins, culminating in a wedding that was called off at the last minute when it was discovered that Angela was technically still married to a man in Fiji who refused to grant her a divorce. In the third season, Angela and Hodgins hired a private investigator to help her find and divorce him, to no avail. The fourth season picks up with that story line, as Angela's mysterious husband finally makes an appearance in the opening episode.

Because the writers and the audience have become so invested in the relationship between Angela and Hodgins, it seems unlikely that a rekindled romance between Angela and Roxy — if it actually happens — will be anything more than a temporary obstacle for Angela and Hodgins.

But the recurring theme of Angela's bisexuality is noteworthy, especially considering the scarcity of lesbian or bisexual characters on TV. Angela is one of only a few on scripted broadcast television next season — the others are Thirteen (Olivia Wilde) on House, M.D., and Drs. Callie Torres (Sara Ramirez) and Erica Hahn (Brooke Smith) on Grey's Anatomy. Angela is also the only one who is Asian American (Conlin is of Chinese and Irish descent, and her character is also half-Chinese).

Sydney Tamiia Poitier's FBI agent character on the upcoming NBC series Knight Rider was portrayed as a lesbian or bisexual woman in the two-hour TV movie last spring, but the show's executive producers are now distancing themselves from this and appear to be de-gaying her character.

Casting for the character of Roxy and the timing of her appearance in the upcoming season is not yet known. If history is any guide, it is likely to coincide with the sweeps period in November.

but i LOVE angela & hodgins, even more so than my love for booth & bones. so i hope you're right sarah, that it's just an obstacle to prolong their engangement. though seriously, how much longer can they do this?

i'm still upset about zack. damn bones writers :(

I had the exact same reaction. "Oh no! Don't break up Angela & Hodgins!"

I'm heartbroken over Zack. It's going to be hard to watch old episodes of the show knowing how they destroyed his character.

i only got into bones last year, but i LOVE it!! always thought angela was a bit on the gay side, and those couple of things in season 1 kinda confirmed it. when the delivery woman came into the lab and the two guys were hitting on her, i so thought, she's gonna be into angela, and then she was!! i was like, haha, oooh! *excited*

although it would be good to see more of this with Angela, i do like her and hodgins together, they can be so cute and sweet!

having said that, the kiss between bones and booth was just plain awesome. i know everyone wants them to get together, i doubt they ever will, it'd ruin the show. possibly.

not unless they do actually get together in Kathy Reichs books?? that's not to say they'd actually get together in the programme though, it doesn't religiously follow her books.

in the final episode of season 3, i was so sure it was Sweets, so it was a bit of a shock when it turned out to be Zack. it won't be the last we see of him, though.

i always look forward to Bones, but the new season already seems like it's going to be great!!

I enjoy Bones a lot, although it's resemblance to the original Reich's books is pretty distant.  Emily Deschanel is super as the lead and I love her evolution as the series progresses.

Angela is a great character played well by Conlin.  I love her and Hodgins together and as we all know, the road to Love is often plagued by obstacles.  Having one of her obstacles as a rekindled relationship with a woman would be a fun, but I do hope that she and the doc will beat the odds, and finally get married.

Michaela Conlin is high on my crush list. Honestly all the women of Bones are. They have the best looking female cast ever, serious jaw droppers. lol. just an opinion. Can't wait for the show to return.

As much as I love Angela/Hodgins, I would love for her to have a relationship with a woman, and then go back to Hodgins. I would hope that the writers would not make it a 'oh, whoops I forgot I was straight' moment, and more of a 'even though I'm bi, and could be with a woman, I'm in love with Hodgins.'

Gillian - I was PISSED that it was Zack!! How could they do that? Okay maybe that makes me a little less confident in the writers....

I was super happy with the delivery woman thing - and though at the time I just though Angela was gay-friendly, I remembered it when they threw in the Roxy thing. I loved the look on her face when she was like "Roxy..."

Anyway, always good to see a post about one of my favorite shows on here!

...im reeli xcited bout the new storyline , altho im guessin like all gud tv shows, it wont air in the uk untill wayyyy after its started in america. :(

i love bones, love the angela/hodgins romance (they're super cute!) but... this show jumped the shark for me when they made zack gormogon's apprentice.

That was the best panel ever! I was so worried about getting a seat that I went to the roon 2 panels before it was supposed to start, lol. David Boreanaz was so funny! Plus we got to see half of next seasons first episode!

Hmm.. I dunno how I feel about this. I love Bones - I think it's one of the best shows on TV. I love when she flirts and that with girls, but I really LOVE her with Hodgins. They go great together.

that can actually pull off having the lesbian majority it seems like it root for not just one hetero couple but two! NOW that right there in itself takes talent I have to say lol. Bones and Booth are my favorite tv "partnered" couple that I root  for and i think hodgins and angela are cute. the only way that could make it better is that i could so see something happening between brendan and angela on one of their Girls Nite Out adventures lol that would be interesting, and i don't think anybody would complain :p
