"Degrassi" Portrays Lesbian Relationship with ClassLesbian Sex
By comparison, Willow and Tara kissed only four times on Buffy; Alex and Marissa kissed twice on The O.C., and Spencer and Ashley kissed once in the first season and only a few more times in the second season on South of Nowhere (although if previews for SON's third season, which starts this Friday, are any indication, Degrassi may find itself surpassed in this department in fairly short order). But unlike the other shows, Degrassi has avoided implying that the girls are doing anything more than that. South of Nowhere's Spencer and Ashley clearly discuss having had sex in the second season, The O.C.'s Alex and Marissa head to the bedroom to have sex in one scene at Alex's apartment, and Buffy's Willow and Tara are actually shown naked in bed together. The Degrassi writers never go there, save for Paige's freaked-out comment, "I have a girl in my bed!" the morning after their first kiss (Paige slept on the floor). Story lines involving the heterosexual characters on Degrassi in the sixth season, meanwhile, have included a boy in a wheelchair worried about his ability to have sex with his girlfriend, as well as a pregnancy scare for one of the straight teen girls. This suggests that Degrassi's writers are less comfortable showing, discussing or even implying lesbian sex on the show than they are with heterosexual sex. But it would be a mistake to assume that this means Degrassi's lesbian relationship is devoid of sexual undertones, or that the couple comes across as just good friends (the way Spencer and Ashley sometimes do on South of Nowhere). The show is not shy about showing sexual tension between Paige and Alex, as in this scene in the fifth season when the two girls are dancing together at the VIP party:
The casual way in which Paige and Alex are physically affectionate, both when alone and (occasionally) around other people, is refreshing and subversive in the way it blends in with the other characters. This isn't a show that shows a lot of skin, in general, so the relative chasteness of the girls' relationship doesn't stand out — if anything, there is actually more physical affection between Paige and Alex in the second half of the sixth season than between any other (heterosexual) characters.
Overall, Degrassi scores pretty well on portraying lesbian teenagers as neither oversexed nor undersexed compared to their heterosexual teen counterparts. South of Nowhere might tackle sex more frankly, but there has been far less physical affection shown between Spencer and Ashley in general. And while there was some physical affection on The O.C., there was far less development of the relationship between the two girls. As far as comparisons to Buffy go, well, at least neither Alex nor Paige has been killed or turned evil. But there's always Season 7. Grade: B+ Final Report Card

Nice review....
Excellent Article
On lesbian relationships on TV
Degrassi's script does on occasion have some very cheesy lines, but the relationship between Alex and Paige is the best lesbian relationship I've ever seen on TV. Another show that's pretty great is aired on a British network (Channel 4). It's called Sugar Rush and it's based on a novel. The show itself fully concentrates on the love triangle existing between the protagonist, her best friend, Sugar and her girlfriend. Got to love the UK for their more open-mindedness towards homosexuality. Although, in North America, Degrassi has its head on its shoulders when it comes to lesbian relationships.
Nice.
Unfortunate Shot
Just got to say, this was an unfortunate shot of Paige and Alex, from the Sixth Season Finale Alex looks pregnant. It's the arm or butt of another character, but with the darkness of the dance, it's hard to tell at first glance. Anyway, good review of Palex, but I was surprised when you indicated that the season just ended; because I thought it ended months ago. Maybe they just repeat the whole season over the summer.
U.S. - Canada
Season 6 just finished airing in the U.S., The N breaks Degrassi up into two parts per season. It finished in Canada(the country of origin) months ago.
"Bad jokes are us, ur me."
haha!
paige and alex kinda came outta nowhere, but then when i looked back on the previous episodes i realized i shoulda seen it coming. they make a cute couple. just wish paige would permanently remove all the cutesy remarks from her daily speech- especially "hon" and "belle (wtf. who says that?!)"
I thought it was a
I thought it was a French-Canadian thing.
"belle" means beautiful French.
"Bad jokes are us, ur me."
I thought so.
Palex <3
Great article Sarah!
i have really enjoyed the Paige and Alex story and they are both gorgeous. If i were to request interviews, it would be on Lauren and Deanna :o) Cant wait for their development over the next season, but they will probably spilt up, damn the n writers
Really interesting article.
Really interesting article. Just a couple of thoughts in response:
1) I agree with what you say about it being a shame about them making Alex's character less tomboyish, and also that it seems like only straight women on TV are allowed to have a masculine side (Starbuck, Olivia Benson etc). At the same time, from the sound of it the way Alex has developed is kind of quite similar to the way I did ... I wore a lot of baggy trousers and jumpers in high school, and didn't really like ultra-feminine clothes, whereas as I feel like as I've become more comfortable with being queer, my style has ironically become quite a lot more girly. I think for me, that's just because I have more comfort with the idea of being sexual (though I know not all women express their sexuality through feminine clothes). But so the change in Alex actually kind of makes sense to me.
2) I find it hilarious that Kevin "Chasing Amy" Smith is now apparently the patron saint of lesbians and of telling girls to go for it.
3) Re the whole discussion of the girls' sexuality, and how Alex identifies as lesbian and Paige doesn't identify as anything but is probably bi... does anyone think that's sort of a pattern on mainstream teen shows? It seems like they're not prepared to put two lesbian-identifying women together. On South of Nowhere, Spencer is gay and Ashley is bi. On The O.C., both girls were bi (it wasn't even clear if Marissa was even that, actually). On One Tree Hill, Anna, who was bi, had had a girlfriend, Darcy, who was apparently gay. I don't know, maybe that's just realistic about teenage girls, or queer women in general. I just thought that was interesting.
4) Between Alex being a feisty, tough-talking, brunette tomboy, and Paige being a rich, faintly patronising, blonde femme.... Is anyone else thinking JO AND BLAIR REDUX??? LOL. Ah, Jo and Blair, together at last... if only through the incarnation of other characters.
Oh Kevin Smith. I actually
JO AND BLAIR REDUX
hehehe...I so didn't catch that! (my Comparitive Studies profs would be ashamed!).
As for the one or more of the teen girls are bi thing...I totally did that my freshman year in college. I tried to convince myself and queer friends that I was just bi. I think for some teen girls, it's the label briefly visited on the way to lesbian land. Though in the long run, bi was SOOOOOOOOO not where I was going. And then there are some teen girls who roundly explore lesbian land only to return to the bi label or hetero land (thus leaving broken lesbian hearts in their wake...sigh).
Bi and Lesbian
Maybe not having a true lesbian-lesbian pairing on TV is a way of acknowledging Bisexual as an actual orientation. There are so many who think being bi is just another way of saying confused and that no one can actually be attracted to both genders.
As annoying as it is because you never see any guys who are bi, it seems like a subconscious way of defending the bi orientation.
Love the article!

My FAVE teen show...

Undate regarding the Spashley kisses
What about Jessie and Katie on 'Once and Again'?
I'm still mourning the untimely demise of that show. I know their story was cut short by series cancellation, but I thought Jessie in particular was one of the most compelling teen characters I've ever seen on television. (Grace and Eli were very interesting too, not to mention the adults ... but I digress.) It helps that Evan Rachel Wood is very talented - even if she is dating that dude. Heh.
Back to Jessie and Katie. I thought O&A did a very good job with that relationship. What I wouldn't have given for a fourth season.
I agree!
Nice to see the Degrassi
Nice to see the Degrassi getting some action. ;)
Just a few notes though. Alex was introduced in the third season and, at the time, had short hair.
I disagree with your analysis of the sex issue and that the Degrassi writers are less comfortable with lesbian sex because Degrassi tends not to mention sex unless there are consequences. For example, in Season 5 Spinner lies to Darcy and says he's a virgin, when he had previously slept with Manny and two other girls in addition to that. That was never mentioned on the show until there were some consequences to his actions.
Likewise, Jimmy, who is the heterosexual in a wheelchair, has never had sex before, despite dating several different girls for many years. Alex and Paige dated for two to three months in high school and then only just got back together at the end of season six. It's completely in character that both girls would have waited since Alex had only been with Jay before and Paige's only other sexual experience was being raped.
agreed
Well, there was Paige's rebound one night stand with Spinner at the end of season 5, but I like to forget about that little incident too.
But I do agree with you that it would be unfair at this point to decide whether or not Degrassi writers are less comfortable with lesbian sex. While I don't really remember off the top of my head all of season 6, the main sex focused storylines I recall were between Jimmy/Ashley and Emma/Sean, both couples that have been on/off/on/etc again since the show's early seasons - so relationships that have a lot more history than Palex. It's not like any of the other couples are constantly shown hopping into bed together - consequence/conflict free - while palex sit around and, I dunno, brush each others' hair... The writers taking their time seems realistic, and both in character and more in tune with the show's general attitude regarding sex, at least for me.
Correction
This was a crazy good analysis. I think, however, that this following blurb may have been quoted incorrectly in this article:
In the sixth season, Paige's friend Hazel tells Alex accusingly, "Paige used to be gay, until you came along and made her gay."
Thanks!
Thanks for the corrections above, I've fixed them. I spent so many hours yesterday researching/writing this piece (I know all the season six stuff, but didn't watch Degrassi much before then, so I had lots to catch up on) that by the end, I could barely remember my own name (I think I called my girlfriend Palex at one point :) So I had a feeling there'd be at least a few mistakes out of the 7 pages. Thanks for your help pointing them out! If you find more, let me know and I'll fix 'em.
Great Article
First I most say Sarah Warn is Hot!! (ok now that that is out of my system) . Kudos to the creators of the afterellen site. I must say that not until recently, I have always thought of this site as although very informative but at the same time very judgmental and hard on all things lesbian, especially Hollywood lesbians. I feel its bad enough we are criticized by the rest of the world and the last thing we need is us being so hard on our selves, but I have come to understand that because we don’t have a lot of role models on TV doesn’t mean we have to sit through the torture or far fetched cheesy version of someone’s portrayal of a lesbian.
I particularly loved the article on Degrassi, which i agree on most of the analysis but we have to understand, that even if one thing we have in common is being a lesbian, we still have different personal preferences when it comes to our ideal lesbian lover. As for Alex appearing more feminine, although there's the high possibility the writers of the show doesn't want her appearing butch, I think it makes sense because its normal for a poor kid like Alex, whose now being accepted by a rich kid like Paige would make some kind of change in her physical appearance .
I appreciate the writers and creators of afterellen for such a creative outlet to the lesbian community, especially people like me who grew up in a country where we didn’t have a chance to be who we are. (ok am starting to sound really deep) lol. Anyways keep it going!!
oh Degrassi, let me count the ways..
degrassi makes me a little more proud to be from Canada, although it saddens me that ya'll in the states are so far behind. Degrassi in one form or another has been a staple in Canadian TV, I doubt there is a Canadian out there who has never seen an episode... well maybe those who live in Bountiful (Google it).
Even in the 80's they hit on 'controversial' topics, Spike got knocked up; but she stayed in school, a straight guy got HIV, Spikes babys’ daddy got high on LSD and jumped off a bridge (my personal favourite). It's nothing new for degrassi to be on the fore front, it's just new that ya'll down south are getting into it (I’m sure of you remember the 80's version).
high five for an awesome article Sarah.
Poor America, just learning
Some of us Americans were lucky
Some of us Americans were lucky, though -- PBS used to show old school Degrassi back in the 80 and early 90s. The year or so lag actually meant I was the characters age while I was watching, way back when (on the PBS station in Houston, TX of all places).
And for the record, Palex was what tipped me from being an admirer of the show to a fanatic.
Great article Sarah! That totally made my day!
Degrassi Love
Being an American, I'm a big fan of the show. I've also seen most of the older Degrassi when they aired it on The-N. And they're both really good. The show really knows how to push the limits without going overboard or being too overly dramatic and showing it's realism at the same time. I think in the states the show gets really overshadowed by other teen programs like One Tree Hill and once aired The OC. Plus shows like Degrassi, South of Nowhere, and The Best Years are showned on digital cable. From my understanding Degrassi will be showing re-runs of seasons one through five on basic cable during the fall which is good for those that have never scene a single episode.
Back to the article, I'm really glad I read this. Makes me even more happy to be such a fan of the Paige/Alex relationship. They surely have the most mature relationship I've ever seen on tv and for them to not only to capture a teen audience but an adult audience as well it's very crafty on the show's part.
YAY!
Give them their own show!
Agreed
Thank You Sarah!
Palex is most deserving of a grade of A! It's an exceptional story, told by amazing storytellers...
Most Americans know very little of "Degrassi", save the occassional Kevin Smith appearence; but, with the help of websites like yours, and fans like these...Palex may one day rank up there with the likes of Willow & Tara sooner, rather than never...
*LS keeps fingers crossed!*
Thank you, Sarah!
oh, happy day
Palex and Spashley in the same day on the main page of afterellen. I think I'm in love. I could just stare at the top of the front page all night. Seeing Palex get some love around here has been awesome. So many of us watched their scenes on video sharing sites when they aired in Canada it seemed remis that they weren't getting any love here. The article was awesome though.
There were two couples I thought were missing in the comparisons, one someone already brought up... Jessie and Katie. While they were "together" for only a couple episodes their relationship developed over the season. The other, I know I risk being stoned with this name, but... Kennedy and Willow. Love them or (more commonly) hate them, they were a lesbian (teen-ish) couple who shared several kisses.
Is is Friday yet? *looks at clock* Schweeet! It is. 18 hrs til Spashley madness.
Agreed
I too was overjoyed when the Afterellen mainpage loaded and I was greeted by the greatness that is Spashley and Palex! I didn't even see the article titles I just saw the pictures and my jaw dropped....it was too good to be true. Great article Sarah. Nicely researched and awesome analyzation of the couple. Overall Degrassi makes my head hurt. If it wasn't for Palex I would have never given the show a second glance. The acting is so-so and the dialogue can be extremely cheesy. However in the relationship between Alex and Paige appears very realistic and well developed. I liked how the main focus of their relationship was not their sexuality, but instead things like class and financial differences.
Palex is/are (not sure which one to use in this case) one of the only things keeping Degrassi afloat. Yes Degrassi has a serious hardcore fandom, but their ratings are dropping. Seriously how many teen pregnancy storylines can you have in one show?!
Back to the count down....less than 18 hours until the Spashley/Spangs lovefest begins!!!!! :oD
Duck and Cover
^
Quick...Someone pass me a brick!
Willow AND Kennedy??? Your right Wicked, it's common to hate that 'ship...In fact, it's a practical necessity!!! >_<
But, on the upside...Jessie and Katie...Awww, they were sweet! *wub*
;)
Arrrgh. So true.
I loved your statement "apparently, lesbianism must be packaged in femininity to make it less threatening."
I've had to deal with this one on a first-hand basis. I've consciously dressed more feminine than is necessary, possibly moreso than some heterosexual women. It totally has to do with the whole "butch" stereotype and not drawing more attention to myself than necessary.
...and all was well, and the world smiled.
My Thoughts
First, again, my thanks to Sarah for offering such a comprehensive look at this amazing couple, who I agree, has been one of the best portrayals of a lesbian teen relationship we've seen on American television. Great writing and incredible insight (the class issue doesn't get talked about nearly enough). And my apologies to Lori, who apparently had to stomach a mini-marathon of Degrassi, while you researched...I hope that you were able to fast-forward through all the terrible Craig, Peter and Darcy storylines that littered Season 6.
A few thoughts to add (and I'll try to avoid gushing too much over Deanna Casaluce, as I have in my previous responses on Degrassi posts on AE):
Sexual Orientation: Was Alex okay with the kiss between her and Paige in "Lexicon?" Yes. Was she always okay with the idea that she liked girls? I don't think so. Alex didn't have an audience for her freak-outs, whereas Paige had Marco, Dylan and, oddly enough, Kevin Smith to voice her concerns to. I look back at "King of Pain" now (the episode where Alex runs against Marco for Student Council President) and wonder how much of her anti-queer campaign was out of a real disgust for the popular crowd versus any self-loathing she came to the realization that "Oh God, I'm Gay." And then there's the Lovecats mini, which has a lot of those same undertones. Anyone else have thoughts on that?
Lesbian Sex: I might be in the minority on this, but I'm glad that Paige and Alex haven't had sex yet. Hard to believe I'm saying that, after having replayed the Spashley make-out session on SoN a few times last night, but I appreciate the consistency of the storyline. We don't know much about Alex's sexual history (though it's presumed she had a physical relationship with Jay), but Paige has only had sex (willingly) with one other person and she dated him for a long while before anything happened. For her to rush into a physical relationship with Alex would betray what we know about Paige's character on the show.
Plus, I think when you're as visibility conflicted about your own sexuality, as Paige is (or has been), the notion of having sex with another girl is scary. I've always been mystified at how other television shows treat it as it's no big deal, like the transition from having sex with men to having sex with women is just semantics, when, of course, it's so much more than that. I'm anxious to see how (and if) they deal with this in Season 7.
----
That being said, there is one thing that bothers me terribly about the Palex pairing: it quietly teeters on feeding into the notion of lesbian sexuality developing as the result of victimization by men, as opposed to it being the natural order of things. Think about it: they paired the only two girls (to my knowledge) on the show who have experienced some physical abuse--Alex, presumably, at the hands her mother's boyfriends and Paige's rape by Dean in Season Two. As subtle as it is, I worry about how that depiction's being internalized by a presumably straight audience.
Response
I really liked your post, and I felt I would respond in kind, as you brought up some fantastic points in response to this terrific article.
Sexual Orientation: I'm really glad you brought up Alex's early views/comments on homosexuality. I have really come to view her attitude towards Marco in King of Pain as a projecting her own dislike of the feelings she hid onto this boy who has an active/semi open relationship with a guy. I think it's even more interesting that Alex ultimately backs away from it. We're lead to believe that it's Marco's impassioned argument that she should win fairly rather than gay bashing, but considering some of Alex's other choices I'm not entirely sure if that's the case.
With the Lovecats Mini, she's definitely has some joking/disparaging comments, but when Paige makes a crack that Alex is homophobic, she gets dead serious and keeps repeating that she doesn't hate/fear gay people. I have a feeling in Lovecats she's more or less trying to make light of her own feelings for Paige by calling her a "total lesbo" and shooting a comment about "doing gay things" Marco's way. There's a definite difference in the tone between the two but a vibe that it took awhile before she was accepting of herself.
Also she originally responds to Paige's "I'm not a lesbian or anything," with a "Neither am I" so it's not as if she jumped right into her lesbian identity, it's more or less a gradual awakening.
Lesbian Sex: I'm in agreement on this one. Paige is so freaked out about the idea of carrying on a relationship with a girl and was for years (until the One Night Stand with Spinner) very hesitant about sex in general, that I cannot see her jumping right into a sexual relationship with Alex, nor can I see Alex pushing her on that issue too hard. Beyond her annoyance and heartbreak with Paige's inability to come to grips with her feelings, Alex tends to be quite supportive of all of Paige's needs, and I would have been surprised if they had sex before the end of this season's finale.
On the other hand I was quite pleased to see them being active (if in the background as it was only a brief scene) in Marco's Safe Sex seminar in I Against I in season five. While they themselves weren't talking about sex it was a nice, subliminal sort of message that lesbian couples should be concerned with safe sex as well.
---
On the last bit about the correlation between lesbian sexuality and the experience of some form of abuse (mostly physical) being promoted by the show, they are not the only ones who have been abused at the hands of men on the show. It's often forgotten that Emma Nelson - one of the straightest girls on the show - was held captive and slightly assaulted by a child molester in a hotel room when she was only twelve. It's affected her sexually, but she's still completely heterosexual. Manny (the supposed school slut) faces severe emotional abuse - and suspected minor physical abuse from her controlling father. And while we don't know what happened to Terri - who was physically abused by her boyfriend Rick to the point where he put her in a coma - as she transfered schools, I have a strong feeling she remains straight.
So while Alex and Paige have both experienced some form of physical abuse at the hands of men, they're not the only ones on the show that have (or even might have) suffered such abuse, so I don't believe that's the track they're taking with Paige and Alex and I hope no one who watches the show will take that view.
Sorry to be picky...
Actually, Willow and Tara kissed seven times. Admittedly, two of the kisses are a little on the chaste side with one them being filmed from far away with a staircase almost in the way.
Yeah, I really don't have anything to say about DeGrassi. Nice article though.
Subtext ppl. Alex and paige slept together
Not seeing how that adds up
canadiana
good run down sarah.
keep in mind that this show is entirely canadian...and was picked up by the N and other networks because of the success of the previous degrassi shows.
here in canada it airs on basic cable...ctv is one of only a few national broadcasters, and most people can pick up reception of the channel with bunny ears.
when a show like south of nowhere is created for a major american channel that is not on cable...that will be a big deal.
until then...i'll be glad i can get this show, and that my american neighbours are getting exposed to it through people like you.
My absolute favorite show!
Awesome Review
Coming into this way late
but I had to make a few comments. First, great article! I love "Palex" (one of two ships that I am comfortable name-smushing, since they're canon - Marco actually _called them Palex on the show_ :), and it's great to see some publicity for them.
I just wanted to note a few things:
1. Regarding Paige's sexuality, and her difficulty with self-identifying, yeah, it can be frustrating. But it's really important to note the fact that at the point in the show where Alex kisses her (and she kisses back), she'd been dating guys for years, had had a couple of significant and long-term relationships, and, I think most importantly of all, had an older, very out, very proud gay brother. Now, the fact that she and (presumably) their parents support and love Dylan being out doesn't mitigate the fact that it's got to be difficult for Paige to all of a sudden be faced with this big change in her life. If anything, I thought it was almost _more_ difficult for her, because, as she says in the show, her brother is "the gay one" in the family. They have their places, just like he's the oldest and she's the youngest, and changing that up can be really hard. (I wish like hell there had been some discussion between Dylan and Paige about her new relationship, but Dylan was off the show during most of this season. :()
2. Regarding the way Paige talks - she calls everyone on the show "hon." Seriously, it's just Paige-speak, and while I realize that it could be grating on some, I find it endearing and really essential to her character. She's that sort of person, and everyone - older, younger, male, female, friend or lover - gets "hon"ed at some point. She's the nicknamey type - I should know, I come from an entire family of them. :)
3. Regarding the sexuality of the couple, frankly, I think I was more disappointed by the lack of Dylan/Marco love scenes than a lack between Paige and Alex. By far, Palex was the more up-and-down couple, on and off again so many times. But, again, Paige is an affectionate, touchy, teasy, "hon"-ey character, so I never felt that there was a lack of love between her and Alex. I guess, it's a difference of what we want to see as an audience. I am way more interested in seeing genuine affection and closeness between _anyone_ than I am in any harder scenes, and, really, there's not much difference when it comes to sex between any of the straight couples on the show, unless it's a "very special" episode on sex. And, even then, we see/hear more of the leading up/aftermath than the actual act. "Degrassi," for all of it's frankness and adult topics, remains a kid's show, and there isn't an episode that can't (or doesn't) air in the afternoon on CTV now that there's enough shows for them to be seen in reruns every day up here in Canada.
So, anyway, thanks again for this great article! I really enjoyed reading it, and remembering one of my favourite couples.
