Erica Friedman's Guide to Yuri

Yuri in Manga

Not subject to television censors, the lilies of manga bloom freely. In the 1970s when gender and sexuality were often experimented with in manga, the likelihood of a happy ending was rare at best. Manga is "far more likely to have a happy ending these days, which is a good trend," said Erin Subramanian of fan translation group Lililicious.

Yuri titles are not as common on Western bookstore shelves as those of other genres, but there are a few titles to look for. The aforementioned Kashimashi Girl Meets Girl is now available in a very well-done English adaptation.

If you're not opposed to reading about baby dykes-in-training, you might enjoy funny sociopath Miu from the wacky series Strawberry Marshmallow. Nothing happens in this series, in which four young girls hang out with an older girl — nothing at all. But it's so damn funny that it hardly matters that the plot of one chapter only centers on going to the convenience store.

R.O.D. Read or Dream is an alternate-universe manga of the previously mentioned R.O.D. the TV anime, with an emphasis on comedy over action. Butchy character Maggie is particularly good yuri fodder in the first volume, while youngest sister Anita gets a love of her own later in the series.

Two American artists have joined the manga revolution as well. June Kim's 12 Days is about a woman's unique way of dealing with her ex-lover's death. Rivkah's wackiness-filled Steady Beat follows Leah as she seeks to uncover the truth behind a love letter, signed by a girl, written to her older sister, Sarai. It's a light-hearted yet frenetically paced story about acceptance.

And although it is written by a man, Iono-sama Fanatics is a cute, whimsical tale of a queen, who has a fetish for women with black hair, and her unusual ladies-in-waiting. Filled with openly lesbian relationships, Iono-sama ("sama" is a Japanese honorific that denotes high status) is a contender for the best yuri manga available in English right now.

I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the 100 percent yuri anthology series Yuri Monogatari (Lily Tales) published by my own company, ALC Publishing. (It's a huge conflict of interest, I know, but what can we do about it? We're the only all-yuri publisher out there!)

Yuri Monogatari includes translations of manga by Japanese artists and also contributions from Western artists. The fifth volume is coming out this fall.

Coming Up

Here's a few things to keep your eye out for! The upcoming anime series Simoun honestly deserves a whole article of its own, because of its complexity. The story takes place in a war-torn world where everyone is born female and remains that way until the age of 17, when they choose a gender. The main characters of Simoun, who are both warrior-priestesses, are all female, but not all of them are lesbian.

Also coming soon is the completely derivative yet oddly enjoyable Strawberry Panic!, which is best known in yuri circles for stealing characters, symbols and whole scenes from well-known yuri anime and manga series, putting them all into a blender and emerging with the anime version of a Long Island Iced Tea.

In addition, First Love Sisters and Voiceful are two new manga volumes that from an all-yuri Japanese magazine called Yuri Hime. These manga and the translated Strawberry Panic! novel are part of a yuri-centric line from Seven Seas Publishing.

Lastly, although it is not officially translated, I have to suggest the novels, anime and manga series Maria-sama ga Miteru. This series about Catholic schoolgirls has one openly lesbian character, but there are many couples who are very open to interpretation.

All of the above is barely the tip of the proverbial iceberg. There are many wonderful lesbian icons in yuri fandom — and a lot of really, really bad lesbian stereotypes, too. But if you have the fortitude, the energy and an unfilled need for cool, attractive, powerful lesbians in your media, there's a huge garden of yuri waiting for you to discover and enjoy.

I find the whole world of anime, etc. confusing

I get that Yuri is lesbian oriented somehow. But what is the difference between anime and manga? What came first, how did it evolve. Why do we care? (kidding on that last one)... I've read a couple of Erica's essays...but am left with NO foundation of understanding of this genre. I know tons of kids that are into anime and I even know about Sailor Moon...sort of...in that an old roommate's son was very into that show and would draw anime all the time...lots and lots of them all women...(and then he came out...go figure). So someone explain this in real simple terms...thanks.
smithie's picture

anime v. manga

i always understood anime to mean animated stuff (film, tv) while manga was drawn on paper (comics).
nyankobrulee's picture

Differences between anime and manga

Manga is indeed media in the form of paper comics, and anime is media in animated form.

A manga title is usually serialized in chapters and is printed in a huge monthly phonebook-sized comic magazine along with other titles. Once the title ends, book publishers will usually print the entire serialization into a volumes of books, called tankoubon. These volumes are what gets localized in America, and known as graphic novels. Manga is usually written and drawn by one person (with assistants), or a group of people (such as the 4-women team, CLAMP)

Anime usually runs from 13-100+ weekly TV episodes, depending on how popular, or how long the manga it is based on lasts. Sometimes they are broadcasted simultaneously with the publication of the magazine, but because manga chapters come out every month, anime usually need to have filler episodes while waiting for the manga to catch up. So in some cases, you'll get a bunch of TV episodes with plotlines that have no relation to the manga, but it gives the animation writers a chance to develop more character development or subplots. And if it's popular enough, the series may even spawn feature-length animated movies (Sailor Moon ended up with 3 of them!) And if not a movie, the series might be popular enough to spawn a plotline that is direct-to-video. It's all about making money.

It's probably best to remember that manga titles are usually the original story, while anime is based on manga. But sometimes it is the opposite: the anime carries the original story, while the manga is based on the anime, and may even extend on the original plot of the anime.

If you really want to know how it (manga) all started, a good place to start is to read Manga! Manga! Manga! by Frederik Schodt. It's an old book, but it's thorough, and he covers all kinds of genres and the history of manga, including a chapter on the "God of Manga", Osamu Tezuka.

Hope that was simple enough, I think I may have spouted too much info. My history with manga and anime has spanned too many years that I've kinda grown out of it. The only thing I can appreciate these days is anything by Yamaji Ebine because it's not so fluffy like many yuri stuff I see out there. There really has been a yuri boom since t.a.t.u. actually.

so prepare yourself for some

so prepare yourself for some gratuitous bouncing breasts  LOL the japanese are so nice arent they?

Thank you, Erica Friedman for inventing Yuricon!

LA, just like what smithie said, anime is japanese animation that you can watch, while manga is japanese comic books. Yuri, however, is some kind of 'genre' in the anime&manga world, about lesbian relationship.

Not to mention there's also another genre called Yaoi, and it's about gay relationship, in which it's more popular than Yuri, cuz oddly enough, housewifes and even straight young girls just looove seeing two boys in love :P

Confusing at first, but you'll get the hang of it once you read a few chapters of a manga or watch some anime episodes.

Thank you!

Thanks so much for this blog. I've been into comics of all sorts for many years and just so happen to be delving into them again after somewhat of a hiatus. It will be great to go investigate some of these yuri anime and manga and with such an informative post I'm now all equipped to do so. Thanks heaps!

More to watch out for

There's also fansubbed Kasimasi anime, Simoun anime, Strawberry Panic! anime... Also, which is not licenced to US, and probably never will be, is "Yami to Boushi to Hon no Tabibito" - though it doesn't have a happy ending, it has the greatest female hero since Joan of Arc :-p

Also, Revolutionary Girl Utena has in no ways a happy ending - and, in all honesty, the whole thing is subtext level only (except for one side-character, and her crush is a vile bitch, doubly so when finding out about it). I haven't gotten to the Haruka/Michiru parts of Sailor Moon, honestly, since I couldn't get past all the magical girl crap <_<

The Wikipedia entry for Yuri has some pretty decent lists of anime with girl/girl stuff in it
. The Lililicious website itself is worth checking, too, it has several scanlated (scanned+translated) mangas there.
Hopeless_Savage's picture

Utena

Well I still haven't managed to see all the series but have seen clips of some angsty looking stuff, nevertheless, the Utena Movie, strange and confusing as it may be DOES have a happy ending, and an amazing dance scene *goes starry eyed*

Sailor Moon remains as my favourite anime of all time, and not just for Haruka and Michiru. If you ignore the existance of the American Dub and watch it how it should be watched, you'll discover a show about strength, love and quirky humour in abundance :-P

It contains many many slashable characters also ^_^

Malini's picture

Dancing...

Oh my god yes, the dance scene is to die for! The roses and the stars and the dresses...(I'm so girly)

I've seen the movie and read the manga for the movie (own it actually) more than a few times, and it starts to make more sense. The manga was less gratuitous, no naked kissing, but significantly more logical.

All the yuri you could ever want in one neat package. ^__^

Erica really has done an amazing (and exhaustive!) job.

trypr's picture

not to start a debate...

...but just for an alternative perspective; I think that the Revolutionary Girl Utena anime series has a very happy ending, but it has more to do with personal development and being true to yourself than romance.

There is no explicit outing of the principle characters, but then a major part of the series is symbolism, psychological abstraction and layers of meaning, some of them even funny :)

Utena passes the reverse bias test: if you saw this anime and the principle characters were a boy and a girl, there would be almost no doubt about the romance in their relationship. The series does leave some room for interpretation, and could be viewed as a story about female friendship, but in my opinion the creator's intent is very clear.

It is much the same situation for Haruka and Michiru in Sailor Moon: neither of the girls comes out in any manner, but they are very clearly in love and the director has confirmed this (the two series also happen to share creative talent).

The film, based on the series of Utena and with similar co-creators, is also explicitly Yuri and very, very beautiful. The manga of Utena provides the root of the "friendship" angle and is certainly not Yuri in intent (except for the noteworthy side character). However, it's fairly distinct from the animated versions: the author, known for her classic visual style, was part of the creative group but worked alone on the comic series. She did not influence the direction of the animated versions greatly.

I'd also like to add my support to Lililicious as well: they do excellent work and I strongly recommend their site.

I sincerely recommend Maria Sama Ga Miteru (also know as Marimite) as well, if you enjoy a bit of girly melodrama with your romance, ever had a schoolgirl crush or want to see some of the coolest female characters in anime (and fall in love with Sei). It helps that it's frequently beautiful and the voice acting in the series is superb (despite the subtitles, you will really feel what they are talking about).

Thank you for including the article: I think it's excellent and I hope more people will come to enjoy the many good things on offer in anime & manga because of it :)

Yuri is also sometimes known as "shoujo-ai" in the Western fanbase, although the latter tends toward the subtextual presentation of relationships. Both terms are useful if you want to use a Search Engine.

missyl's picture

utena

The utena movie ending is pretty clear yuri. The creator himself said that not everyone got the love between the two main characters for the series so they re-did the story in a way to make it more obvious and happy for viewers in the movie.

My 1st comment!

I'm a anime and manga freak! Basically any cartoons. I'm quite suprised, Japanese are quite open to homosexuality really. This yuricon thing is actually pretty acceptable in Japan. The Japanese are very commited to anime, look at the storylines, it's all about aliens and magic thing. That's what makes it cool. Like any other kid I like to watch Dragon Ball or Pokemon, the 1st yuricon I watched was Sailormoon but my favourite is Maria-sama ga Miteru or Maria Watches Over Us in English. It's so cool! It's a romantic story and very open to lesbianism. The girls just sweet. ROD TV is pretty cool too. But I'm really looking forward to this Strawberry Panic! The picture's cute. Hihi I love strawberries..

whatever they say I am, that's what I'm not..

Nice Primer

Thanks for the informative article.  I've been a comic nerd of galactic proportions for many years.  However, I've always kind of skimmed over the manga/anime portion of my monthly Wizard magazine.  This was partially out of disinterest but also for financial reasons--I'd hate to find myself in a scenario where I was plunking down even more money on a weekly basis to feed my geek hunger.  Yet, I've always wanted to know a bit more about manga/anime so that I could be a bit more well-rounded in my knowledge of comic art and storytelling.

I may have to just bite the bullet and buy myself some manga.

The Wife's picture

Yuri manga

You should buy Erica's book, but  before you start spending on the mainstream stuff check your local library. Many of them have massive manga sections and I know our local one doesn't police that they've got!! lol Plenty of fun stuff slipping under the radar!!

Otaku!!!

An Otaku here!!!!, definitely yuri manga and anime has more fans now, and also a lot of series to choose, my favourite one is Simoun, but Kashimashi girls are really cute, also the girls of Ichigo Mashimaro as you said this anime is really Funny, Miu and her ninja complex...funny.

I saw Mai Hime and... well, it has some fanservice but i think is good, the story, the characters, and i know Shizuru is a little crazy but I just love her Kyoto accent.

i like Strawberry Panic!

i've watched Battle Athletes, Kannazuki no Miko, Kashimashi, Maria-sama ga Miteru, Noir, Revolutionary Girl Utena, Simoun, Strawberry Panic!, Yami to Bōshi to Hon no Tabibito, Burst Angel, Girls high, My-HiME, My-Otome, Sailor Moon,

i like Strawberry Panic! a lot. it had no male character in it at all. the couple in Girl's-high is quite cute. Girls-high is very funny too.
i don't know why i don't like Kashimash, people around me like it a lot.

now i know why i was very into Battle Athletes, Utena, Sailor Moon when i was a kid.lol

Japanese is really good at making anime. they always have some creative ideas.

The seres that are "comeing soon" have arived.

I have watched all of Straberry panic and Simun and they both rock the fiking world lol. Simun is very frustrating though even though there is a lot of girls kissing girls the two girls that you want to get together in the end take so long to get it together lol.

STRAWBERRY PANIC IS THE BEST YURI ANIME THAT EVER EXISTED!!! it gives me hope for the future that anime is so wonderfully. look it up on youtube!!!

And has anybody heard about

And has anybody heard about Claymore, i´ve heard that has yuri, but mostly in the manga, but the animation is really good, made by Madhouse the same that made Death Note.

I liked Strawberry panic... but, the animation is too bad, Simoun is a lot more better, also Maria-sama.

Elevown's picture

Claymore

I`ve been see Claymore!! I have boot manga and anime but i can´t tell how much yuri they are. Certainly its a much interesting story and the art its beautiful. I can talk for the anime cause i don`t have much time to check the manga. Its resting peacefully in mi laptop. However, the story remains me of Noir, most for the action, though Noir is much better.

Simoun...ah!! And I agree with Shiori, theres no competition between the anime and manga of SP!

Does anyone heard about Hen? I know I know, its most knowing as a hentai anime but the manga it so the oposite and much beautiful.

P.D. im very very sorry for my bad english. u.u

Every Yuri fan should have these incredible books. I insist ~~d:

Keep up the excellent work, Erica!

Strawberry Panic

First of all, thanks for this article. :)

The only yuri I've watched is Strawberry Panic and I really liked it. At first it was all too weird - the three schools, the many characters, the complicated names, the different Japanese titles (-sama, -chan, -san, etc.) - but it slowly grew on me and by the end of the series I was completely hooked to it. I strongly recommend it.

After finishing Strawberry Panic I wanted to watch more yuri anime but I didn't know what other stuff would be good. This article gives a few ideas, which all seem interesting, so thank you very much!

Kaiva's picture

YoruSoi Yuri

I would really recommend for yuri to watch bleach. Its a rather complex anime, and manga, and it has two and sort of three notable, and lovable!, lesbians.

first there is Chizuru Honshō who is an open lesbian who is introduced in the first episodes by trying to grab Orihime's, another characters, breasts. Tite Kubo, the creator, isn't really shy about lesbians. Chizuro is a minor caracter really, but just immensely enjoyable through her antics on screan and in the manga.

second and third are Soi Fong (also Soifon) and Shihoin Yoruichi. Thier relationship is shown through flashbacks mainly, but are so well done in my opinion. Soi used to be Yoruichi's subordinate and was in love with her - Kubo doesn't shy from that - but the flashbacks explain Yoruichi left without a word one day to follow a man Soi hates, Urahara Kisuke. The flashback ends with Soi hating her for a century, vowing to surpass Yoruichi and hunt her down to kill her, but of course a confrontation occurs 100 years later. oi and Yoruichi fight and Soi reveals how torn up she was when Yoruichi left her without a word and I don't completely want to give away the plot.

The YoruSoi episodes, as the yuri fans lovingly call it, are few and far between, but like all good shows *coughxenacough* subtext is everywhere and abundant. Plus it's possible the YoruSoi relationship will continue as Kubo has shown interest in throwing Soi and Yoruichi together often for main plot reasons.

Plus after certain episodes a sort of deleted scenes are shown, and in one Soi tried to give Yoruichi a box of chocolates!

Whew...long post, and its my first. I saw an anime post and was devastated to not see YoruSoi in it, but then again, it's considered a kids show so im not too shocked. But i wanted to share the YoruSoi love ^.^

Shiori's picture

Love yoruichi

In the old forum I wrote about the lesbians of bleach, but nobody was watching bleach at that time.

Yoruichi is one of my favourite characters of bleach, and I liked the yorusoi relationship I hope that is true what you say about yoruichi I want her back in the story, but you forgot to mention one more lesbian in bleach, one of the Vizard I can´t remember her name, she is always reading magazines about girls or something like that, they mention it a few times both in anime and manga, I really think Kubo Tite is a little obsesed with lesbians.

For Elevown: I have heard about Hen but I haven´t read it, or seen the anime (there is a Hen anime??) but there is other manga called "Maka-Maka" is more erotic than Hentai, but very good too, the drawing is the best and is in colour, we all know is unsual in manga.

Yes - the anime is known here as "Strange Love" and you can find it on the Yuricon Shop, like everything in the article.

The Hen manga was actually two different manga series - you can read my review of the whole series here: http://okazu.blogspot.com/2004/03/yuri-animeyuri-manga-hen.html

RG Veda

There is so much to say about Yuri and I'm thankful to Erica that she outlined that whole world so incisively on this platform.

Regarding Anime I would recommend Utena, Noir and Brother Dear Brother. Especially to ppl who want to avoid sheer fanservice and search for explosive pairing material for tragedies.

For me RG Veda offers with Kendappa and Souma Yuri icons par excellence. Clamp's poetical drawing style is enchanting and I guess a fierce and dramatical love between women in an epical fantasy story is a rare sight. ...if someone starts with "oh but Xena" ...has really low expectations in fantasy

sliced bread's picture

Clamp

You know, when I first started reading Clamp's stuff way back when, I couldn't figure out what it was besides their art that kept me hooked. Took a while to figure out that besides their awesome drawing, it was the myriad of intense same-sex relationships in their works (whether it was subtext/maintext, friendship/more) that had me checking out pretty much anything of theirs I happened to come across. Though I have to admit RG Veda was way too complex for me when I first came across it - it's in my queue of "things to go back to now that I'm not 12."

Oniisama e - Brother dear Brother

This anime is a very good, kinda angsty, yuri exemplar. If you want some more deep reflexive and much more drama and intrigue you should definitely try this one, sadly enough, I don't think its been licensed in the US -.-' . On a side note, "anime" is short for "animation" as the Japanese would pronounce it (their only "lone" consonant is "n" by the way >.>), so anime is animated stuff. Manga means something like "quick drawing" and so manga refers to what we would call comics and/or graphic novels. I'm very happy to see a big review on yuri manga and anime, there are many series that hint at lesbian love and some go a bit beyond (we actually have a young adult couple of lesbians adopting a little girl in a fantastic magitech world <.<).
Brutal_Romance's picture

they forgot one...

It's strange there was no mention of Hen in here, as ridiculously awful as it was, it was still entertaining.

I mean, who wouldn’t enjoy watching a confused school girl with impossibly huge tits that looking at them is painful enough and an attitude of a 6 year old brat parading around in a mega short skirt.

I for one, sure did.

Haruka helped my coming out

One of the 'people' that had very much to do with my accepting my sexuality was Haruka Tenoh (the butch from the Sailor Moon series).

At first i though that she was a boy, but when i found out that she was in fact a girl the fact that it didn't shock me made me wonder.

After Sailor Moon i watched Maria sama ga miteru, Strawberry panic, Kannazuki no miko, Yami to boushi to hon no tabibito and R.O.D (to name just the yuri and not the yaoi). And i never get tired of watching how schoolgirls react when they find out they like other school girls :P

sailor moon really changed my life and i am grateful that Takeuchi-sensei wrote it. (^_^)

Ey!! Brutal Romance!! There are mention of Hen. But I agree; its such a shame that is almost a forgoten story. Its a beautiful and silly story =]. At least the manga. Im not so fond to the anime, as funny it is. Not to mention hentai.

On the other hand, this might sound ugly and wrong but at least where I live its a little difficult to find anime stores......im not kidding. So I admit I have to use the other metod: piracy. And believe me, that wasn´t easy too. However, Im not succeded in my search. Just a few pages with articles and I remember one that upload the scripts from a few chapters too. But thats all. Its kinda sad if you ask me.

Strawberry Panic!

You could watch Strawberry Panic on YouTube.

It's quite interesting but after that you will like feel like the whole story is really unreal. It's like everyone and anything is lesbian. Aren't teachers supposed to be disapproving of it? But it's not the case in strawberry panic. It's quite weird but some of the characters look kind of cool! :)

McCall's picture

Yami to Bōshi to Hon no Tabibito

Yami to Bōshi to Hon no Tabibito is a great anime for yuri, most of the female characters tend to be after one or both of the female main characters, not sure if it's available in English but it's still good subbed.

There's also a good anime called Noir, it's not actual yuri but it is implied. There's also Ouran High School Host Club, it's predominantly het and yaoi but there is the odd yuri kiss and most importantly there's the The White Lily Group (lily being japanese for yuri), a female supremicist group who go after the main female character, Haruhi.

CindySR's picture

Yami to boushi and others...

It's funny that you've mencioned Yami to boushi because I've always considered it as an "Anti-yuri" XDDD

But only because the ending is not so... yuri friendly XD

Really nice article! I'm happy to see that there is Yuri in america! That's always nice, i've been a yuri fan since a long time ago, in fact here in Mexico we do have a very strong community that supports and enjoys Yuri, so I'm glad to see that finally Afterellen.com is getting more interested in this.

Well almost everything is already said, but just for those who have already watched Mai Otome and want to see more of that fantastic show, you can find on the internet the OVA's (extra chapters), they're 4 and they really worth it.

The OVA's of Maria Sama ga miteru are also avaliable now, with much more Yuri (a lot more yuri *w*)

And just to finish, if you're into action and pretty ladies with guns don't miss Noir and Madlax, excellent Animes you have to watch. And for those who want something new look for the newest yuri series called "Venus vs Virus".

So that's it! Have fun and enjoy.

Introducing the Queens of Yuri

In Sailor Moon "S," the third season, Sailors Uranus and Neptume are introduced. They are the lesbians. And they are the reasons that *I* am such a huge anime/manga fan. :-) The American version turned them into cousins, but the Japanese director had them play the roles like a married couple. It totally worked. :-)

More upcoming Yuri

Seven Seas, which has shown great interest in expanding Yuri titles her in the west, has just announced a few more licenses yesterday. One, Hayate x Blade, is a delightfully wacky comedy set in a crazy school for girls in which the students fight with swords for fame and fortune. There's one openly lesbian character (Jun - who *always* wins character popularity contests) and a lot of lesbian coupling possibilities.

7S made more announcements that I've detailed at Okazu. But HxB is the best of the bunch.

StrawberryPanic's picture

I love Yuri!

I've seen all of these series. I adore Strawberry Panic! It is the second best yuri out there. It comes in a distant second to Kannaduki no Miko. KnM has more of the traditional action packed anime with a beautiful yuri story at the heart of the series.

Well written article! Kasimasi is a waste of time in my opinion. I hated the ending to a large degree. Read or Die, while entertaining, leaves much to be desired. But Mai Hime and Mai Otome are amazing series and certainly worth the watch even with only a lesbian sub plot. Yamibou is a gorgeous series as well. The art, music and twisting plot are truly wonderful. Once again, it did leave me feeling a bit empty at the end.

My suggestion to folks who haven't seen much anime but want to see great yuri: Stick with Strawberry Panic (romance), Kannaduki no Miko or Mai Hime (action). Unfortunately, SP isn't yet licensed that I am aware, so the other two are easier to come by (even via Netflix). I also highly recommend you stick to the original Japanese with subtitles (dubs can be so brutal and childish).

Kashimashi

I did like Kashimashi, but I do understand what you said about the ending...

I liked it, but it did feel like something was missing... well... just the first ending, because I really really really liked the OVA of Kashimasi (Yes, there is one OVA wich brings a second ending to the series, one that might make a lot of fans happy)

I don't know if it's still on youtube but i'm sure it must be there somewhere.

I remember hearing all the

I remember hearing all the controversy as to whether or not there was indeed an OVA. I have never seen it, but I'm glad to hear there is one. I'll look for it again. Most of these series can be found on YouTube. Kasimasi, Strawberry Panic and Kannaduki no Miko all were a few months ago, at least.

Oh, one more note: definately stray away from Mai Hime manga. You will be quite disappointed (as Natsuki drools over Tate). Shiznat forever!! Haha. :)

I loved this article, so few

I loved this article, so few people understand or even try to watch anime much less read manga. There's an unfortunate supposition that it's for kids since it's animated. I say to these people that they have obviously never head of Bible Black or other Hentai. Thank you, thank you thank you for mentioning Utena and ROD, they're some of the very best anime's out there , the lesbian characters only make the plots even better! The original film? It's one of the best I've ever seen!

A series I like that has two really great lesbian characters is Burst Angel, the characters Joe and Meg are a subtle sort of couple, but it's a lot clearer once the series ends. It's sort of a western in a sci-future Tokyo it has humor and remains entertaining through the whole series. There's also a character or two in Azu Manga Daioh that are lesbian even if it never comes to anything.
