2013: The Year In Lesbian/Bi Movies

Who’s Afraid of Vagina Wolf is the quirky film written, directed and starring Anna Margarita Albelo. Anna plays “Anna”, a lesbian in her forties who hasn’t quite got it all figured out yet. She sets off on a quest to have it all, which proves to be challenging in this darkly funny film. Vagina Wolf also stars Guinevere Turner, and Janina Gavankar (The L Word, True Blood) and Carrie Preston (Good Wife, True Blood).

What’s Up Docs

The Punk Singer documents the life and times of Kathleen Hanna, the front woman for Bikini Kill, Le Tigre, Julie Ruin, and one of the major figureheads in the Riot Grrrl movement on the ’90s. The Riot Grrrl movement however, was incredibly important and embraced by many lesbian and queer identified women at the time. (The Punk Singer is also directed by out filmmaker Sini Anderson.) The documentary is a fascinating look at Hanna’s rise as a cultural icon and innovator, as well as her current focus of health, and music composition. Le Tigre band mate and queer sex symbol JD Samson is interviewed for the film and is featured in concert footage.

In a year woefully deficient in significant lesbian/bisexual film roles for women of color, The New Black stands out for its focus on how the African American community is dealing with the ever strengthening gay rights movement. Gay marriage, civil rights and religion all come into play in this fascinating and thought provoking documentary. After much play on the festival circuit, the film will be featured on PBS in summer 2014.
