11 reasons we already knew Mulan was a lesbian

Last night on Once Upon a Time, Mulan revealed that she likes the ladies. I mean, she likes them-likes them. Twitter lost its collective mind as soon as it happened, straight people everywhere going, “A gay Disney Princess, what?!” And gay ladies going, “Well, duh.” And not just because the live-action Mulan is head-over-heels in love with Aurora. No, we’ve known Mulan was one of us since, oh, 1998, when her very first Disney animated feature was released. And here are 11 reasons why:

1. Her Reflection

What young lesbian gal didn’t identify with Christina Aguilera belting out the lyrics to reflection? “Can it be, I’m not meant to play this part? / Now I see, that if I were truly to be myself / I would break my family’s heart. / Who is that girl I See / Staring straight back at me? / When will my reflection show / who I am inside?” Come on. Lady Gaga couldn’t have written a more powerful gay anthem.

2. Her Deep, Abiding Attachment to Her Pet

You know how lesbians love their dogs and cats and hamsters and rabbits more than they love most actual human beings? Yeaaah: Mushu and Mulan.

3. How Fast She Played The Androgyny Card

If there’s one thing a closeted/unaware lesbian loves, it’s to dress up in ties and suits and armor and whatever other masculine thing. Challenging gender roles just feels so right.

4. Her Lesbian Matchmaker Knew She Wasn’t the Right Girl for Any Guy

Yeah, that’s right: Openly gay lady Miriam Margolyes (Harry Potter‘s Professor Sprout!) played Mulan’s matchmaker. She was a bit of a cross dresser herself, really, and right away she sensed that Mulan wasn never going to be happy with a fella.

5. She Was Better With Her Hands Than Dudes Were With Phallic Appendages
