If you’re interested in comic books, badass women, or the feminist-y internet’s general frustrations, you know that we’ve reached a fever pitch in 2013 about the lack of a Wonder Woman movie. Wonder Woman is part of DC Comics’ holy trinity, which also includes Batman and Superman — and while those two have racked up 16 big screen films between the two of them, Warner Brothers continues to pass over the most iconic female comic book character in the history of the space-time continuum when it comes time to commit to silver screen projects. (Most famously, Joss Whedon pitched a Gail Simone-approved Wonder Woman film to Warner in 2007 and they shrugged him off because what in the world could Joss Whedon do with a big budget superhero movie?)
But late last week, Variety reported that three actresses had screen-tested for the upcoming Batman vs. Superman crossover film — and Variety thinks those three women are probably reading for the part of Diana Prince:
Sources tell Variety that Fast and Furious actress Gal Gadot, G.I. Joe: Retaliation thesp Elodie Yung and Olga Kurylenko have or will test for the female lead, which appears to be the role of Diana Prince aka Wonder Woman. Sources stress there’s still a possibility this role could be Bruce Wayne’s love interest, but the casting description of “tall, brunette, athletic and exotic” also matches that of the Wonder Woman character in the comics.
WB had no comment.
For me, this “news” falls firmly in the I’ll-believe-it-when-I-see-it category of potentially awesome miscellaneous information. But while we’re dreaming, here are ten women who would crush the role of Wonder Woman. (I’ve chosen to omit actresses who are currently tied to other comic book movie projects, even though Jaimie Alexander, of Thor fame, would be 100 percent perfect for the role.)
Kerry Washington was the first actress who popped into my mind when I heard this Wonder Woman “news” and as soon as it was out of my mouth, someone said to me, “She’s too old.” And I nearly punched that person in the nose. She’s 36, dude. Ben Affleck (the new Batman) is 41. Also, don’t you tell me we can’t have a black woman in this role. Have you seen Scandal? Olivia Pope kind of already is Wonder Woman.
I feel more and more surprised every year Castle is on that Stana Katic hasn’t been scooped up to the big screen for an Agent Maria Hill-type role. Oh, that’s right: It’s because there aren’t man Agent Maria Hill-type roles. Kate Beckett is a BAMF. Stana Katic is a marvel. Plus, check out that photo: She’s already got the crown.
Her action acting chops resume includes The Fast and the Furious, Annapolis, Chuck, Mr. and Mrs. Smith and even D.E.B.S. She’d be right at home kicking ass against a green screen with Batman and Superman at her side.
I just realized Zoe Saldana is in Marvel’s upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy movie, but I’m leaving her on this list because she’s more qualified to play Wonder Woman than probably any other actress in Hollywood. You’ve seen Star Trek, right? You’ve seen Avatar? You’ve seen her in one Colombiana, yeah? One of the few solo female-fronted action movies ever made? She’s got the skills and the star power.
Adrianne Palicki’s Wonder Woman TV series flopped before it made it to the screen, but as someone who has, um, obtained a copy of that unaired pilot and devoured it, I can tell you that she was awesome in that role and it was the writing and directing that were the problems. And she was the best part of the last G.I. Joe movie. Plus also: Clear eyes, full hearts, Golden Lasso.
